Tokyo police have discovered components of several stolen luxury cars in a container kept at Yokohama Port near Tokyo.
Police confiscated the container and searched it on Thursday. They suspect that a four-member group, including a 45-year-old Afghan national, stole and disassembled luxury cars to export them overseas in the container.
Prior to the search, police last month arrested the group members for allegedly keeping a Toyota Land Cruiser at a site in Ibaraki Prefecture, north of Tokyo, while knowing it was stolen. Police later released them, but learned that the container allegedly loaded with other stolen cars had been delivered from the site to Yokohama Port.
Police moved the container to a facility in Tokyo’s Koto Ward. During the search, they discovered engines, doors, driver seat parts and others from nine vehicles that were stolen in Chiba and Saitama prefectures.
Police believe that the stolen items were to be exported to the United Arab Emirates.
Police also suspect that the group has repeatedly exported stolen cars overseas.
