Hokkaido Local Food Guide|7 Must-Try Eats in Sapporo & Asahikawa

Hokkaido—the great northern land. Under this vast sky, we’re here to meet “flavors that move you.” Alright, let’s set off on a gourmet journey! First stop on our Hokkaido food tour— FURANO BURGER, where you eat amid sweeping nature. Whoa—here it comes! That looks incredible! Look at this! Perfection! This is insane! I’ve never seen lettuce shaped like this. Let’s dig in. Please, go ahead. Delicious! This is next level. So good! It’s like… Can we even call this a “hamburger”? The meat is insanely good, and the bun is so fluffy. It’s not like any burger I’ve known. At FURANO BURGER, everything—from the patty to the veggies to the bun—is locally sourced. You get the full taste of Furano in one bite! There’s bacon in here, too. Wow, looks amazing. Let me try just the lettuce part. The lettuce is delicious. So crisp! This is incredible. And eating it out here, in this nature— you just don’t get burgers like this. Totally. Crazy good. Shockingly good. So meaty, and so crunchy, too. When you order the set, sausages and fries come with it. And these are Hokkaido potatoes. True! Can’t beat that. So good. So sweet. Almost like dessert. Delicious. Such rich flavor! It’s unbelievably good. This place is amazing! This shop— Right? So good. That was my serious voice. Let’s go eat melon. Because, you know—Furano. People told us, “It’s worth coming all the way here to eat it.” Can’t wait. I wonder how different it is from other melons. Melon time! Here we go! We’ve come to Tomita Melon House, right next to the famous lavender fields of Farm Tomita. We made it. All for the love of melon. There were melons lined up everywhere. It was wild—absolutely overwhelming. I’ve never seen that many melons in one place. Itadakimasu. So good. Delicious. Wow, that’s tasty. So sweet, and the aroma is wonderful. You know how melon— the very top usually tastes the best? I think everyone knows that part. Here, it’s all like that. Ah, I see. Every bite tastes like the richest part. It’s unbelievably good. So it really is different? From melons you buy elsewhere? Completely different. It’s insanely good. Sweet, but not in a fake way— it’s like… a gentle, gracious kind of sweetness. Like, “Behold, sweetness has arrived…” Sweeet— kind of like that. A blessed sweetness. Exactly. Ah, it’s almost gone. Already?! We’re halfway through so fast. Delicious. Um… May I have seconds? Let’s go eat seafood. I’ve been excited for this. Because Hokkaido = seafood. This place started as a kappo/small traditional restaurant, and this is their izakaya version. Our local friends swear by it. Then it’s a lock. Can’t wait. A red lantern glowing on a traveler’s night— “TENKIN,” a 10-minute walk from JR Asahikawa Station. Founded in 1937, beloved by locals— a long-standing Asahikawa izakaya. So good! Simmered skate (kasube). Whoa—my first time! First for me, too. I didn’t know this. Locals recommended it, so we ordered. It’s ray—skate. Ray? Ray as in… this ray. How do you even describe it? This ray! Apparently the “bones” are tasty. You don’t hear that often. Huh? It’s super crunchy. Tastes great. A texture I’ve never had. Yeah—really good. Crunchy and snappy at the same time. Take two chews and it’s gone, right? So clean—finishes in a snap. Tasty. Really good. They also do it grilled or fried. We went with simmered today. They said the overnight-dried one sold out. Must be popular. Here it is— cod milt (shirako). You know that’s guaranteed delicious. So good, right? We have a winner. Champion! Wow… Delish! It bursts with flavor! This is unreal! Everyone needs to try this. Sliced raw Pacific saury. You don’t often get saury sashimi. Delicious… Your voice just got small. And your whole body shrank. The moment it hits your tongue, you get that rich fish fat first. After that savory fat spreads in your mouth, a whole school of flavors— passes through like a fish shoal. With aroma and sweetness! And the more you chew, the sweeter it gets. Only saury can do this. This is amazing. It’s from Nemuro. Whoa—here we go. Wow! The assorted platter! Assorted platter! That’s insane! Itadakimasu. So good! So sweet! De— —licious! Delicious! What was with the “shh”? “Shi” for “shii—delicious”? I almost yelled loud enough to blow the roof off, so I swallowed it. It’s so good you doubt if it’s even shrimp. Like, “Is this really shrimp?” Shrimp Werewolf. “Are you truly a shrimp?” Shrimp Werewolf. Ridiculously good! So sweet, right? Sweet! Super sweet! Sweet and so springy. And such a clean bite. I’m pretty sure it’s shrimp. For the finale, we ordered dobin-mushi (teapot-steamed broth). Starting with the dashi. The aroma is fantastic. So good. Maitake! That’s literally the product name! “Ipea,” a restaurant inside Hotel WBF Grande Asahikawa. A luxe breakfast with a seafood bowl and soup curry—open to non-guests, too. Such a treat in the morning. They say you can try most Hokkaido specialties here. From fish to jingisukan to soup curry— and Hokkaido basically equals soup curry. Start with the seafood bowl? Let’s dive right in. Itadakimasu. Mm! So good. I think there’s squid in here, too. Squid, scallops, salmon. Delicious. Super tasty. Let’s try the soup curry with some broccoli. Pretty spicy. Really? With this soup curry, you’ve got chicken and veggies laid out— and you pick what you want yourself. For soup curry, you serve the rice separately and dip it in. Got it. Nice. Tasty. Everything here— tastes as good as if you’d gone to the shop itself. Totally agree. Impressive. So good. “When you can eat all of Hokkaido here”— they’re not kidding. For real. Super good. Tiramisu and “Milk Grape.” Looks great. Delicious. Tiramisu—rum and coffee. So indulgent. Yum. Crazy good. This tiramisu is their No.1 best-seller. It said so on the sign. A delicious, grown-up flavor. And this one’s milk and grape. Looks so good. You don’t hear that combo often. Whoa—so good! So much milk! Your reviews are always so vague. Usually you taste milk, then sweetness. Here, there’s milk… and then more milk. Milk ahead of the milk. Try it. Milk-to-the-milk? It was milk-to-milk. Wow, delicious. So good. Whoa… Milk-to-the-milk. Milk all the way! Yummy. We’ve arrived in Sapporo. We’re here. And when you say Sapporo— there’s a place I love for jingisukan and oysters. Let’s go. They have both? They do. Dream come true. Right? It’ll change what you think you know about lamb. Oh really? You’re raising the bar. I can here. This place can handle the hype. Here we are. Lamguchi Kazuya. Good evening. Here it comes! The trio platter has arrived! Beautiful. Mutton, Icelandic lamb, and Australian lamb— two of the three can be eaten rare. They told us, “Cook it on the rare side.” Only the mutton well-done. I’m obsessed with this rare style. Shall we grill? Let’s do it. It’s not a jingisukan dome—this is yakiniku-style. A Mt. Fuji lava plate cooks everything evenly and deliciously. Starting with the Icelandic lamb. That’s pretty raw! You can actually eat it quite rare. I’ve never had lamb this rare. So tender! Delicious. Right? No gaminess at all. So good! It’s almost as light as pork, but nothing matches this tenderness. This one’s Australian. Also eat it rare. Amazing. Never had meat like this. It’s meatier than the Icelandic one— more meaty flavor and aroma. Not “smell” in a bad way— just a beautiful, beefy fragrance. Yeah, more robust and meaty. Lastly, mutton. They said to cook this one through. Mm. I can sense the lamb—far away. This one— had that familiar lamb aroma, but it peeked in and vanished. That lamb-y note. Which one do you like best, Kate? Honestly it depends on the person, but— the mutton might be shockingly good for me. It’s amazing. Here comes lamb sashimi. That’s rare, right? So good—so tender. Wow. There’s zero gaminess. It’s pure umami. Perfect. Wow—so good. Almost like roast beef. Of course, I get why people like that lamb “funk” sometimes— that unique umami. But here, I want you to enjoy how clean it is. Oysters are here. They look amazing. Where were these from again? Akkeshi “Maruemon.” You can get them raw or steamed—we chose raw. The flavor hit fast. Yeah, that was instant. Super creamy. These are insanely good. In Sapporo ramen, Sumire is the classic— and Sumire means miso. Yup. They have shio and shoyu, too, but this looks amazing. Delicious. Noodles, here we go. So good. Sumire is so reliable. The noodles cling to that rich broth perfectly. Delicious. There are bean sprouts and wontons in here, too. We went with the half size today. So even when you’re pretty full, you can still come to Sumire. Love that. Like— eat and drink at an izakaya, then finish with Sumire— the winning course. Championship level—pure happiness. Everyone should come. You really should! This time we added an egg topping. A soft-boiled egg—looks great. Miso and egg are an outrageous match. It’s almost cheating. Definitely add the egg. For sure. At this point— I’d say, broadly speaking, just come to Hokkaido. It’s a parade of mind-blowing bites. The taste of Hokkaido, land of food— I hope everyone gets to try it.
