A Motorcycle Trip Around Japan’s Islands | Island Travel Ep. 2
Last time, I rode along the seaside roads, stopping to see scattered art installations This afternoon, I’ll stroll around the town and then ride toward the mountains The first destination is Angel Road It’s one of the most popular spots on Shodoshima, where many people come to enjoy the view “Let’s make a U-turn” “Cars are lined up. We can’t get through” “Shall we try the second parking lot?” My friend was stopped by someone who seemed to be guiding the parking “They said we can park behind this building” “OK” “That’s helpful” “This building? Around here?” “Wait, they guided you here?” Angel Road | A sandbar about 500 meters long that appears only at low tide.
It connects Shodoshima to small nearby islands, and you can walk across.
It’s said that if you walk hand in hand with someone special, your wish will come true.
It’s one of the island’s most beloved sights. Since it only appears a few times a day, you never know if you’ll catch it until you go At low tide, many people gather on the sandbar, each enjoying the moment in their own way The sand path stretches toward Nakayo Island as the tide recedes Beyond that, three more islands are connected by the sand The sound of footsteps and laughter drifts gently away on the calm breeze On both sides of the path, small tide pools shimmer in the sunlight The blue of the sky and the blue of the sea blend together, making this a place where you can feel the breath of the island Now, let’s head to the next destination “It looks pretty jammed if I keep going straight…” “Let’s head back the way I came” The second stop is Nakayama Senmaida The scenery shifts from the blues of the coast to the greens of the mountains At the end of winding roads, vast terraced rice fields that have existed for 700 years come into view “You can park your bike up there” “Ah, okay. I’ll park up there” “Let’s go up there” “Thank you!” “You can park another one over there” “Looks like I can park here” At the foot of the terraces, artworks from the art festival are on display I’m looking forward to seeing what kinds of works appear alongside this rural landscape I thought we would be walking along narrow footpaths, but the way is unexpectedly well paved Walking between the rice fields, I can take my time and enjoy the view Embrace | Shodoshima:
An installation where visitors can step inside and let body and mind harmonize with nature.
It carries the wish that Shodoshima, opening its arms wide like an embrace, will welcome people from all over the world. As I walked, wrapped in delicate light and shadow, a bamboo dome appeared In this enveloping space, I felt I began to understand the meaning of “embrace” Now, let’s move on to the next place “Ready?” I’m riding around the island, and I’ll stop by anywhere that looks interesting I wanted to see Angel Road again, once the people had left, so I returned there By evening, the path was slowly returning to the sea In the disappearing scenery, I felt the flow of time I’m heading to the port after a short ride Until the return ferry arrived, I decided to spend some quiet time at a café There are no more destinations I’m simply letting time pass gently Even these ordinary moments are an important part of the journey The lights of Kagawa began to appear The Setouchi Triennale is held in spring, summer, and autumn sessions Next time, I’d like to visit again in the summer session See you again in the next episode
The theme of this journey is “Islands.”
