Umeda Christmas Market – Those were the Happy Days in Japan 【梅田クリスマスマーケット】

Each year in December people used to gather under the Sky Building in Umeda, the shopping and business center of Osaka, to enjoy hot wine, sausage and other specialties at the German Christmas market. All sat together, drank their mulled wine and ate roasted almonds in front of the brightly lit Christmas tree.

In 2019 the market was set up for the last time, as the dark clouds of Covid and pandemic fears brought an end to the joyful event. The stall operators from Germany could not enter Japan, and it was decided to forgo the Christmas market.

In recent years a new yearly Christmas event has been organized under the Umeda Sky Building, but it is very Japanese, missing the atmosphere and the taste of the traditional food stalls. So what remains are the memories of better days, when the smell of original German sausages and roasted almonds filled the air around the Sky Building Christmas tree.

This video filmed back in December 2013 might help to remember those happy and peaceful times.
