TOKYO – The operator of monorail services in Tokyo is pitching its route connecting the city center to Haneda airport as “Tokyo Panorama Line,” highlighting the view afforded by the train’s elevated tracks.
The line, which opened in 1964, just ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, runs 17.8 kilometers from Hamamatsucho Station in Tokyo’s Minato Ward to Haneda airport. It offers views of landmarks such as the Rainbow Bridge stretching across Tokyo Bay and even Mt. Fuji on clear days.
The train cars, straddling a single concrete rail, also pass high-rise buildings, warehouses along a canal and a racetrack.
At Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station, which mainly serves international flights, there is a photo spot where passengers can capture both monorail trains and airplanes landing on the runway.
A Tokyo Monorail Co. official said the company hopes “more passengers will appreciate the unique panoramic views of Tokyo” with the new nickname.
The nickname, introduced on Nov. 1, is used in train announcements and station displays, according to the railway operator.
