Street Food Hopping in Yokohama: Ramen, Dumplings, and SO Much More!

We are in Yokohama in Japan, just south of Tokyo. We are in Yokohama, Chinatown. This is the biggest Chinatown in the whole of Japan. In fact, it’s the biggest Chinatown anywhere in the world outside of mainland China. So, we’re going to explore Chinatown. We’re going to go walking around Yokohama, see what there is to do, see what Yokohama is all about, and let’s go mooching, find some food, find some beers, and have a good time in Yokohama. Come with us. Let’s go. [Music] I downloaded a taxi app. Apparently, this is the one to use in Japan. It’s called Go Taxi. And I’ve just ordered a taxi. We’re going to go to a shopping district and get some food. And this is him coming. The yellow taxi. 39. Oh, very nice experience in the cab, isn’t it, Ronda? Yes. Very driver is so polite. We got a little TV screen there that told us to put our seat belt on. Yeah, you have to wear a seat belt. Thank you. You too. Bye-bye. How was that, Ron? You almost closed the door, didn’t you? Amazing. Well, I didn’t know. Was I supposed to get out the other side cuz he didn’t unlock it for me? And I thought I’ll just climb over and I said climb over and then he was saying no, go that way. The market’s there. It’s put you on the safe side, right? Yes. Safe side. Okay. It’s green light. Let’s go. Okay. So, we’ll wait to cross the road and then go shopping. You don’t cross when it’s not your light. It’s not allowed. Okay. So, we are in a covered shopping arcade. Looks like a used to be a street, but there better be some food cuz we are hungry. Oh, yeah. You can see food. Well, welcome to Yokohama. Our first city of many on this 3-w week trip around uh Japan, exploring Japan, taking you guys with us. And let’s start by eating. I wish Rhonda would stop shopping. I should not have brought her here. I’m so hungry. I can We need to eat first and then shop. Oh, the stacks. Wow, that’s cool. Oh, there’s even Christmas stuff. Everyone’s shopping away. What are you doing, Rhonda? I want you to come and see this. We need to buy some for you. Okay. What is it? So, it’s a seafood store. Yeah. Wow. Call that fresh fish. I thought it was frozen, but it’s all fresh, isn’t it? Sauce or something. Oh, yeah. I love surf clams. You do? Can I buy them for you? Look at the size of those prawns. Wow. The size of my head. Crab legs. Oh, look at the crab legs. One half of a crab for $78. Yeah. Look at the eels here. Look how big those eels are. Massive. They’re alive and kicking. Wow. Everything’s so vibrant colors. Chinese barbecue pork. I love that stuff. The problem with shopping down here is it’s 80% of the stores are food stalls that I could eat right now. We’re starving. And my hunger is just killing me. We haven’t eaten yet. Is that ramen there? No. I know what I need. Google Translate and I’ll be able to read it. Let’s grab Google Translate out. So, I just used Google Translate at that restaurant. And yeah, they sell ramen, but thank goodness for Google Translate because it’s an awful ramen made with awful meat. Oh, they’re cool. They’re nice, aren’t they? Bean in it. Which one? Uh, the bean. Okay. So, this one is the red bean. It’s like a pancake mix. It smells like pancake. And it’s got red bean in it. So, do you want to try it first? Sure. So now Glenn’s going to try it. I tried it. It just tastes like a pancake. It’s not sweet like our pancakes though. Um and the outside like the edges are so crispy. So you go for it, Glenn. I didn’t get the red bean in mine though. This is really good cuz it’s not too sweet. That was uh 120. So like a dollar US for for this. Oh, that’s the red bean pancake fish gone. So, let’s find that elusive dish of ramen. I thought it would be everywhere under. Oh, ramen, where are you? Look at these eggs here. Even Glenn D not eat one of those. I don’t know if they’re raw, boiled, cooked, whatever. [Music] There’s some odd fruits around here. Look at these little snails. See, loads of snails. I think there’s a there’s a ramen place here. Is that the Oh, that’s the ramen. It’s closed. Oh, no. Tasa ramen. Let’s have a look. Oh yeah, it says mame. Those are ramens. Absolutely. Okay, let’s get in here. So, we order here and then we go and sit down somewhere where there’s lots of room. Can sit at the bar or we can sit at a table. And then you pick your meat, right? Okay. So, we need So, you put your broth, then you put your meat out of there. So, we just put 3,000 yen in for Tamman. Please press the red button. Sorry, we cannot provide large portions. [Music] Button below. Press it. You want salt ramen. Was this one? I want pork yoza. Okay, press that. And black circle. I’m going to have pork. This one. Here I got Okay, let’s see what we get for lunch. Eh, is it? [Music] It smells so good in here. What a great little little ramen place we found here. That was fun ordering. We We really don’t know what’s going to arrive until it arrives. And that was 580 yen. So about $5 Canadian. That’s really good actually. Look at the tiny glass you get though. E. Wow. It’s really, really small. Little mini beer. Glenn’s got a little mini beer. Minim. Cheers. Ra. Cheers. Cheers. First beer in Japan. The owner came across and offered us forks and Rhonda immediately refused them and says, “No, we’re going to use traditional Chopstick. Chopsticks and spoons. Glen didn’t have a choice. No, she never even asked me. I said, “No, no, we’re good.” But I’m becoming an expert because uh I’ve already been in a Japanese restaurant and used chopsticks as you saw in the previous video. Yeah. He gave Rhonda a sheet with three pictures of bowls. I’ll show you actually. I’ll put the picture up here right now. And uh I’m just going to translate it because we didn’t translate. Ronda just pointed at one that looked most appetizing. So, let me go and see if it’s full of uh pointed at one giblets or something. I’m pointed at one that looks like it was giblets and I went, “No, no.” Let me switch off. When I switch off Oh, here comes the food. Wow. Wow. Oh, that looks amazing. Mhm. Smells incredible. And that’s my one. It’s got the egg on it, the chery pork. Oh, Ronda’s g. They look good, don’t they? Wow, look at this. Well, the first thing I’m going to do is grab a napkin cuz I know I’m going to get a little bit dirty. The second thing I’m going to do is test my broth. [Music] Oh, that is tasty. Wow. Okay. The green here. Is that cabbage? I think so. It’s not seaweed. No. Maybe spinach. They’re big on spinach. Spinach. That’s really nice. So, let’s get the chari. Look at this chari pork. M. Let’s try that. Oh, wow. That is incredibly tasty. Going have a go with this egg. I don’t know if I can pick an egg up with chopsticks. Oh, it’s soft boiled inside. Oh. [Music] Oh, wow. It’s kind of It’s flavored as well, like it’s been stewing in the broth or something. [Music] Okay, that was an absolutely delicious first meal in Japan. Welcome to downtown Yokohama, Chinatown. Here’s the entrance to Chinatown. Let’s go moochin, explore Chinatown, and try some traditional Chinese street food. Let’s go. Wow, food everywhere, Rhonda. Everywhere. What are we going to eat? Yeah, the food choices are food choices are brilliant, aren’t they? Yes, they are. Bless you. How about that for a menu? Wow. Crazy, eh? Crazy. And here’s the Chinatown gate. Capsule Planet. Look at all the capsules. Oh my goodness. Wow. Wow. It’s huge. It’s still daylight, but at night the lights down here must be absolutely amazing. Food everywhere. I want to try the fried chicken. We want to try dumplings. We want to try soup dumplins. There’s a few things we want to try. Let’s go explore and let’s find some food. Randy, all the lanterns up there form a dragon. Oh, sorry about the video, guys. I’ve just realized all the lights are LED and it just plays havoc with the camera. What we’re going to try first, I think this is a pretty famous place for fried chicken. Let’s head here, I think. And that’s what we’re looking for. And it says it’s number one. So, let’s try it. The number one fried chicken in Chinatown. There’s two flavors. Salt and pepper or marinated spicy. I think the What do you think? Marinated spicy. What? Chicken. Spicy. Spicy. Smart number 11. Uh-huh. So, this is the order window. And that’s the pickup. Oh, I see. Yeah. Oh, crispy duck. Oh, they got the bow buns. A peeking duck burger, it’s called. Are you excited? I am. Yeah. I really want to try this chicken. Wow, that looks huge. It is huge. And look at the red spiciness on it. There’s a lot of spice on there. Absolutely no clue how this is going to taste, but we went for the spicy one. Looks like a smashed chicken breast. Yeah, it looks like it’s butterflyed open, eh? Chicken breast, but a little bit spicy. Not too spicy. Yeah, but you’ve not got to the lot of the peppers. Crunchy as heck. the coating. But the the flavor this crunchy coating sweet. Oh, weird. Yeah, it’s sweet. But I can taste some spice behind it. [Music] There’s the chicken in there. I thought the chicken might be tough, but it’s not. It’s not tough at all. I’d probably give this a seven out of 10. And the only reason I give it a seven out of 10, not like an eight or nine, is cuz the flavor is just so unusual to me. I mean, I don’t expect sweet on chicken. But, I mean, it goes together. So busy, so many people. And love all the street food where you stop, grab something. You like to drink beer on the streets, walk around. Okay, I think Rhonda’s found the next dish she wants to try. Oh, yeah. Sort of dumplings. Let’s see. Pork, right? Fried pork. Steam on a Friday. Uh, steam. Steam. Hi. 500. Thank you. So, you order steamed dumplings? Yeah. How much are they? 500. Uh, oh, yeah. They’re 500. I see. Those are fried and those are steamed. Yeah. They’re steaming away. Oh, they’re heavy, eh? They feel solid. Yeah. Okay, just go for it. Just go for it. Yeah. Tastes really good. Yeah, but what’s that orange stuff? No idea. Just tastes like a bit of carrot or something. Okay. Your first Chinese food in Chinatown, Yokohama. All gone. Damn, Ronda. It’s all gone. That went down quick. Well, there’s Hong Kong Road down there. Ronda spotted a beer bar. Super dry, extra cold beer. Well, if you are spotting super dry, it’s extra cold beer, you are speaking my language. 550. There’s a little offshoot alleyway in Chinatown. Let’s head down here. See if there’s any anything different. What I love is a little a little outside beer bar where I can sit and watch the world go by and have a beer sat outside. Hello. Oh, it’s got noodles. This is ramen, beer, noodles. There’s a soup dumplings. Oh. Oh, the beer’s getting cheaper down here. Oh, Adam 580. Santory whiskey. Yeah. 450 beer. Well, it’s not a pub. It’s like I don’t want to eat something else. You can’t go in a restaurant. Just have a beer. That would feel weird, but we cannot find a beer bar anywhere. Let’s pop out on this next street. Food everywhere. Unreal. Oh, here we go. There you go. There’s fridge magnets. There we go. Oh, Santa’s in Japan already. And we did it. Rhonda, you’re flashing cuz you’re in LED light. But we found a little table outside a restaurant and we asked them, “Can we just have beer here?” Oh, perfect. And she said, “Yes.” So, thank you. We are here. Thank you. And she just handed us a cloth to wash her hands. Oh, we got little cloths as well. Amazing. Awesome. And a beer. Yay. Well, we’ve been sat for an hour and a half at our little bar, the only beer bar we found. It’s not really a beer bar, it’s a restaurant. We just asked the lady, “Can we just sit and have two beers?” She said, “Yeah.” So, that was it. Once we got our outside table, we just ordered more beer and more beer. And it’s nice just sat people watching. Look at the view we’ve got. I’ll show you. You can see we’re just uh sat in a side alley off the main Chinatown street. and just watching the world go by. Drinking a asah draft asah beer. So that’s the that’s the bill paid. We’ve done we had four beers. That’s all. It’s completely black out now. Look at the the night sky. It looks really pretty though in uh Chinatown now. All the lights are on. But anyway, the bill four beers. It worked out at $25 Canadian. So, what’s that? $6.50, $6 a beer, something like that, which it’s about same as Canada. Uh, we are in a major tourist area right here in Chinatown, so acceptable. It was good beer. Nice cold. It’s now dark. It looks like a different place, doesn’t it, Ronda? Yeah, it does. It’s beautiful. All the lights. Wow. Now it makes me want to find another beer bar. No, it’s cool here. And it’s early. It’s only 6:00. Knock it. It’s only 6:00 in the evening. Oh. Oh, yeah. Look at all the empty. So, you have a beer outside here. Your garbage here. Taiwanese beer. Look. Oh, we should get something here, Rhonda. This is a cool place because they sell beer and they do all your dumplings. Ben is ordering some dumplings to try those ones right there. I don’t know how it works. Oh, he’s grabbing them right now. Oh, they’re ready. They’re ready. Already, Freddy. Okay, let’s go try some buns. Let’s go. Some dumplings. We didn’t get buns. We got the dumplings with the juice inside. They’ve got pork meat and I’m expecting uh like a broth gravy inside. Snagged a perfect little spot here. Look, that is perfect. I’m going to rename myself to Glenn Chopstick. Chopstick man. I’m good. Okay, let’s try one of these. Are you ready? Yeah. I’ll try the green one. It’s brown underneath. Look. Who knows what what it is. Is that going to be sweet? But be careful cuz it could be liquid. It could be. Okay, go for it. Is it going to be sweet? Just have a guess. What do you think? Sweet or savory? You just I told you be careful. Rhonda, a bit of advice. Be careful when you bite it cuz it’s full of soup or broth or whatever. Whatever you call it. Yeah. Try the green one. The bottom is crispy. It’s lovely. Bloody tasty, eh? Way better than the last ones. Oh, yeah. It’s so good. Look at the meat inside there. Oh, I’m sorry. Wow, what a flavor. Oh, you got a beer to wash it down. Just stood on the street scoffing food, trying all kinds of different stuff and drinking beers. Look how many we’ve had so far. And this is a Taiwan beer. What we had, what street food we had. Start off with the chicken crispy chicken and then the dumplings on a skewer and then these fried dumplings. Fried dumplings with definitely the the best. And we definitely have it all over us. We Oh, yeah. They were so squirty. That was fun though. It was fun. Squirting juice everywhere. And uh finishing off with a Well, not finishing off cuz we haven’t finished eating yet. We’re going to try some desserts next. Uh anyway, Taiwan beer this time is awesome. There’s a lot of people just walking around with beers as they walk drinking. But for some reason, I cannot walk and drink beer. So not a multitasker. I have to stand. You can’t walk and eat, walk and drink, walk and talk, walk and listen. I got to be stood still. Yeah. I could not walk drinking this beer. Tastes just like ting. The Chinese beer tastes the same. It’s nice. It’s good. You squirted. Have you done a gland squirt? Yeah. It just came out sideways. See, we’re not uh professionals at this. No, definitely not. I like the first one. It’s cooking the fried chicken there. That’s what I had earlier. Not not here, but that’s the one that you saw me eat earlier. Back on the main uh thoroughare in Chinatown. And Rhonda is fancying another snack. It is a street food day for us, Rhonda. Yes, it is. Oh, they have your strawberry. Oh, and this is what she’s looking at. Hold on. Let me turn the camera and show you. What is this? So, there’s straw there’s panda bun. A little panda buns. Yeah. Well, that one’s got shark fin in it. Oh, braced pork bean paste, which is sweet. There’s a shark fin. Look at that shark fin bun. Spicy meat. But then a strawberry custard. What are you getting? Uh, a steamed bun. Oh. Oh, look at this. Let’s come over here. [Music] Look at this one. Look at the size of it. That is massive. It is absolutely scorching hot. Scorching hot. So, it’s basically a steamed bread dough. So, it’s not it’s not crispy on there. There’s paper under there. Oh, look at the steam coming out of it. It’s a mix of sweet and savory. The It’s not just like bread dough. It’s actually flavored. I think it’s cuz of the maybe the pork juices in it and the steam. So, probably. Oh, wow. That is good. It’s the softest bread that you’ll ever taste. It’s really, really flavorful. Especially when you start biting into the pork down here. It tastes really good. Awesome. Time to find dessert. Okay, let’s go find dessert. What you getting, Rhonda? Cheese two cheese balls. Cheese. Oh, yeah. says, “What are they?” My cheese balls right there. It’s just cheese on a stick. Those? Yes, those. Okay. Okay. They’re tiny. I thought they’d been big. They look really big in the picture. Uh-oh. You’ve tried something without me trying it first. That’s a first for you. Beautiful. I think it’s like a parmesan cheese. Parmesan. Mhm. So, it’s quite tart. The cheese. It’s really good. Oh, good. I’m not a hot cheese kind of guy. I don’t really like hot cheese. I like cold cheese on crackers, but but it’s not melty gooey like stringy. It’s like parmesan cheese. Oh, yeah. Weird. I was not expecting that. Yeah. It’s quite a nice strong cheese flavor, isn’t it? Strong cheese. Yes. This really nice looking restaurant over there. Oh, it’s pasta, isn’t it? There we go. Cheese balls are good. So good. Chinatown gate at night. Come on, Randy. We got more food to get. More food, more beers. One thing about um eating around here in Japan is when you buy from a vendor Yeah. You either eat it there and leave your garbage there or you carry your garbage back to your hotel with you cuz you can’t use another place’s garbage cuz there’s no garbage cans. There’s no garbage cans. Yeah. A strange thing about Japan, there’s no garbage cans. So, you either eat where you bought it and then leave your garbage or you take it home with you or in our case back to the hotel. I really don’t know what I want next, Ronda. A beer. a beer or something savory or That’s a nice thing about mooching around a place like this Chinatown. You just see some street food and look at this bun. Come here. If you like it, you grab it. Oh no. What you see now? I don’t know. Rice, shrimp, peanuts, pork. Oh, that’s pretty stuffed, isn’t it? It’s pretty big for now, though. We’ve had a lot. Full of goodness, probably. Yeah. I think I’m done with savory now. Oh, I think we need some dessert. Some dessert dessert here. What’s this or pudding? This is all dessert. Okay, Rhonda, I know I said I don’t want savory anymore, but you’re going to try it. This place looks like it’s steaming away and it looks really good. I just want something sweet, but I don’t know what I want, you know? Oh, look at those little things. They’ve got stuff in them. Okay, so we settled on this one. Thank you. The three flavor dumpling they just given me. And there’s a little table we can sit at. You got now. Well, this is dessert. All it says on the label is sesame seed dumpling. And we asked the guy, “Are they sweet?” He said, “Yes, sweet.” So, and that’s three different flavors. No clue what the flavors are. No clue. No clue what they taste like. Oh, that was really sesame. Is that like a custard inside? It’s like a like a jam. Like a fruit jam, but not too fruity. Oh, okay. No, you know what it is. It’s beans. It’s a yellow bean paste. Okay, let’s try this one with the little black sesame on it. It’s got a really really charred Oh, it’s cuz of those those black sesame seeds. They’re like burnt charred. You can taste the char on them. And the grand finale. I think it’s red bean this time. Yep. Red bean. That’s the ones I just ate. Those three Well, to be honest, Rhonda, I cannot eat another thing. I would hope not. I am so stuffed, but this uh Chinatown, it’s awesome. There’s offshoots, streets everywhere. You can you can walk for hours around here. And if you uh if you come here hungry, you’re definitely not leaving Hungary. No, I was going to say every second shop is selling food or store is selling food, but I don’t think it’s every second one. It’s everyone. It’s like nine out of 10. Nine out of 10. Yeah, one in 10 is not selling food. That’s how much food there is around here. Anyway, we’re just going to head out through the main gate. All lit up for the night. Well, that’s it.
