Sterling High School senior Chelsie Brown, the two-time Kansas Class 3-2-1A girls state singles champion, is competing in the Deaflympics tennis tournament in Tokyo, Japan.

Brown and her women’s doubles teammate Emily Hangstefer will compete in the semifinals on Saturday against Japan’s Rina Komokata and Riko Suzuki. Tokyo is 15 hours ahead of Central time.

Brown and Hangstefer defeated Italy’s Cristina Abrami and Asia Carrera 6-2, 7-5 in the women’s double quarterfinals and defeated France’s Jessica Gagnant and Emy Martins 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 16.

“These are very strong athletes over here that she’s playing against so just to get a win is awesome. She is the youngest on her team,” said Chelsie’s mother Sherry Brown.

“This has been such a great experience for Chelsie. She was selected to be on a team of four and will be competing playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles. There will be over 70 countries and approximately 3,900 athletes in this world wide event.”

In singles, Brown lost to Italy’s Asia Carrrera 6-1, 6-4 in a second round Sunday match and lost to Greece’s Artemi Routsi 9-8 in the consolation round of 16 on Thursday. Brown received a first-round bye.

In the Round of 32 in mixed doubles, Brown and American partner Alfredo Galvez lost to Japan’s Riko Suzuki and Haruto Imai 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. They received a first-round bye.

Brown finished her high school tennis career at Sterling with a record of 120 wins, 14 losses, and a 69-match winning streak (33-0 in 2025 and 36-0 in 2024).
