We rode a PIRATE SHIP in Hakone, Japan

[Claire] I landed in Japan with my best friend Justin
less than 2 days ago. but we’re already itching to escape Tokyo
with a day trip to Hakone. This magically quaint piece of the countryside
is speckled with relaxing hot springs, but with only one day there, we are focused on completing the Hakone loop. A more perfect day trip
does not exist in this world. A scenic train followed by a cable car,
two and a half miles of soaring ropeways, a pirate ship ride, yes, a freaking pirate ship, and finally a bus that completes the loop
so we can return to Tokyo. Stick around and join us
for a very full day in Hakone. Good morning from a misty, rainy Tokyo. We’re in a bit of a hurry because
we purchased our train tickets and so we have kind of a strict timeline
that we need to stick to. [Music] [Claire] We made it!
[Stressed Claire] That wasn’t stressful at all! We were standing outside looking confused,
not sure where to go, and a local just walked up to us and was like, “You lost?”
I was like, “Yes, we are lost.” [Claire] And she helped us get here. Uh, wow! [Claire] This train is called… [Claire] the Romancecar? [Justin] So they call them
romance trains around Japan. [Justin] And basically they’re sightseeing trains
that are a little bit more special. [Justin] So car 1 usually is the first to sell out. [Justin] So I have no idea how we’re here.
[Claire] Yeah. [Justin] Car 1 and 10 have like, extra windows
of the front and the back of the train. [Claire] Uh… [Claire] The train is moving… [Justin] We might have gone on the wrong one.
[Claire] The train is moving entirely too early. [Claire] Why is the train moving? [Claire] Will we be in trouble
for being on the earlier train? [Justin] They’re reserved seating. So…
[Claire] Oh… [Justin] I need to ask. [Claire] Well what do we-
[Justin] We might be able to get off at the next station [Justin] and get in on the next one.
[Claire] Okay. So, who do we ask? [Passenger] Are you supposed to be on the 8:30?
[Claire] Yep. We are on the wrong train. [Claire] I went running down the cars
and I went all the way to the back of the train [Claire] and I found the like, the person/assistant,
the like, train attendant. [Claire] They’re just gonna let us keep our seats
and we’re gonna get there 20 minutes early. [Justin] Yay!
[Claire] Yes! [Conductor speaking in Japanese] [Music] [Claire] The Romancecar eventually
dropped us off at Odawara Station where we transferred to the Hakone Tozan Train
for a tranquil climb through lush forests that made us feel like we were transported
into a Studio Ghibli film. [Justin] We’re seeing more fall colors
since we’re higher up. [Justin] It’s so pretty out here. [Claire] We’re gonna take the train all the way
to the cable car and the the cable car goes to a ropeway. So, I’m gonna spend the day doing basically all the things
I love most in this world. [Music] [Claire] These are chocolate
coated rice crackers…? [Claire] No? Is it peanuts? [Justin] Yeah, it’s peanuts with chocolate.
[Claire] Oh! [Claire] We’re starving. We haven’t had breakfast.
So, we got ourselves a meat bun and a steamed bun. And then I saw them making a smoothie
with cotton candy on top of it and I cannot NOT try it. [Claire] So, we’re getting that, too.
[Justin] They have a foot bath outside. [Claire] There’s a foot bath? On the terrace? [Claire] What? WHAT? [Claire] Um… amazing?!? [Claire] I have to admit, this is not how [Claire] I saw this day going,
[Justin] Starting off? [Claire] but um, apparently
we’re gonna eat snackies and bathe our feet. Honestly… this feels amazing.
I don’t want this to melt. First meal of the day, cotton candy smoothie. [Disappointed Claire Noise] The smoothie is -terrible-. [Claire] What is that? [Justin] Mmm…! It’s delicious. It’s banana.
[Claire] What do you mean it’s de- [Claire] What do you mean it’s delicious?
[Justin] Banana. [Justin] Tastes like banana to me.
[Claire] Really? [Claire] I’ll eat the cotton candy
and you can have the smoothie. [Claire] Mmm! It’s a little bit sweet. [Claire] It does have a filling.
[Justin] It’s kind of like a sweet cornbread. [Claire] Sweet cornbread?
Yeah, that’s about right. [Claire] We’ve got our steamed bun. [Claire] Mmm! Mmm… Mm! Hmm. Mhmm. [Justin] The steamed buns was really good.
[Claire] Yeah, it was great. [Music] [Claire] After breakfast, we rode the first half
of the Hakone Ropeway where we got our first glimpse of the geothermal activity
that this area is known for. Although, we might have smelled it
before we saw it because the air up there was pretty pungent. We left the hotel today at 7:15
and it is now 12:15. So, it took us 5 hours to get here? [Claire] We just got off of the ropeway and the big thing to do here
is to purchase black eggs? [Justin] They don’t look appetizing, [Justin] but supposedly eating one of these eggs
extends your life by seven years. [Claire] If this extends my life by seven years,
it will be worth it. [Justin] They’re warm.
[Claire] There’s only- Oh! Oh, they are warm. [Claire] Oh, that feels nice.
There’s only one way you can purchase them. You have to buy four at a time,
and it’s 500 yen for four. [Claire] They’re black on the outside [Claire] and then…
[Justin] Normal on the inside. [Claire] The outside is really pretty actually.
I like the texture. It looks like art. [Justin] Regular egg.
[Claire] Regular egg? [Claire] The smell of sulfur here comes in waves
and when it hits it’s very strong. And as we were exiting the shop to buy these,
we got hit with a thing of sulfur [Claire] and Justin thought that it was the eggs.
[Justin] That it was the eggs. It wasn’t. [Claire] Can I have a little salt?
The eggs do smell a little funky to me. [Pensive Claire sound] [Justin] Regular egg. [Claire] Are you okay? [Hic]
I have the hiccups. [Claire] We did end up buying
the Hakone 48 hour free pass, which gives us entry onto the
ropeway, onto the cable car, onto the trains, onto the buses. All in all, I think it’s a
very good deal to do that. [Claire] I- We were a little
unsure about that last night, [Claire] but we did a little bit of math.
[Justin] It makes things easier. [Justin] You just show your little pass [Justin] so you don’t have to worry about
getting tickets at each place. [Claire] Wait, seriously? Is that it?
[Passengers chattering excitedly] [Justin] Yeah!
[Claire] Oh my god, there it is. [Claire] Ohhh, wow. [Claire] Mount Fuji! [Claire] We have acquired
the world’s strongest coffee and are headed down to the pirate ship. The pirate ship is gonna take us back,
kind of close to where we began. It’s called the Hakone Loop. Doing the whole loop in a day
seems to be very easy if you don’t stop and do anything
along the way. Oh. My. God! Look at it! That one’s a pirate ship. It is… ahhh! I love it so much! Incredible! [Astonished laughing] Today is literally just a day of transportation
and my delight is -so- complete. I am so happy! It’s just absolutely beautiful
and peaceful and unique. I’m thrilled. [Music] [Claire]  Oh my god! [Music] [Claire] We didn’t get to see Mount Fuji from the boat.
[Justn] No. [Claire] But I’m so glad we
got to see it from the gondola. [Claire] I think this is how we get
the bus to complete the loop. We had a very full day, so we missed out on
Hakone’s museums and hot springs, but we were able to fit in a little detour to the Hakone Shrine
and its iconic torii gate in Lake Ashi. Unfortunately, we weren’t the only ones
who wanted a photo with the torii gate, though. While we wait in line,
I’m gonna try a snackie. This is the Crunch
[Crunky for those who can read] and it looks like a strawberry kind of flavor. Mmm! It’s like a milk dud, but crackery. That’s really good. Wow. I almost froze to death in that line. We waited in line for over an hour. The funniest part is that,
there were swan paddle boats and every now and then someone would paddle boat
right into the middle of the shot and some people got MAD. It was really funny. That’s the most commitment
we’ve ever had to a shot -ever-. [Justin] Was it worth it? Let’s find out.
[Claire] And… well, do you- [Claire] You can tell me if it was worth it. [Music] [Claire gasps] Oh… wow. [Music] [Claire] I think the tradition here
is you throw a coin into a place where they’re collecting coins and then you bow twice, and you clap twice,
and then you bow again. And then on your way out of the temple,
you bow one more time. [Claire] And…
[Justin] At least that’s what we saw. [Claire] That’s what we’ve observed.
[Justin] Yes. [Claire] It’s time for us to go home now. It’s gonna take us like 3 to 4 hours
to get back to Tokyo. [Claire] And it’s almost 4:00? 4:30?
[Justin] Yeah. It’s gonna be late, [Justin] just because we have
to do a bus and then a train [Justin] and then we’re not staying in the Shinjuku area.
[Claire] Yeah. [Justin] So we have to take another train back to Asakusa.
[Claire] Asakusa. [Claire] Let’s go home!
[Justn] Good day! [Claire] That was a -beautiful- day. [Music] [Justin] Okay, I’m gonna put the egg on the side
and then eat it with rice. [Justin sneezes]
[Claire] Bless you. [Justin] It’s the spice.
[Claire] The spices are getting to you? [Claire] Look at the size of these noodles.
Is it good? [Justin] The one bite I had is perfectly spicy. [Claire] Justin and I are very consistently
having opposite food opinions. [Claire] I preferred the ramen
from the first night. He preferred the ramen we just had. [Justin] I mean, they were both great.
[Claire] Oh, yeah. [Claire] Both totally delicious.
[Justin] But I like the more udon style noodles. [Justin] And you like the thinner ones? [Claire] I like the thinner noodles.
The thick noodles are kind of cumbersome for me. [Claire] We just ate, but… [Claire] there’s a 7-Eleven right here. [Claire] And…
[Justin] So, time for treats! [Claire] Snackies! [Claire] Let’s go get snackies. [Claire] I have had my eye on this mochi ice cream
since I saw it the first night in 7-Eleven. It looks like little owl eyes staring back at me. I’m not sure how to use this spoon. Ohh, ohh, mmm. That’s exactly what I wanted. [Claire] It’s just mochi with ice cream
in the middle of it. Mmm. [Justin] Cute.
[Claire laughs] [Justin] Hmm, very good.
[Claire] Mhm! [Claire] Before my mom has a heart attack
about the amount of sugar I’m eating right now, we didn’t actually eat very much food today. And I have to try these things for science. I also have this custard cream puff. Ooh, it’s quite large.
Smells nice. [Claire] Okay! I’ve made a mess.
[Justin] Ohh.. god… [Claire] Take this! [Laughs] [Justin] Mmm.
[Claire] You like it? [Claire] Is this your favorite from today?
[Justin with mouth full] Yeah. [Claire] Really? It’s good, but it’s just-
it’s kind of plain to me. [Justin] It’s very messy.
[Claire] Extremely messy. [Justin] As I have it all over my mouth and lips.

  1. As this episode contains a distinct lack of what most might consider private biological functions, I'm sure that claire's mum will overlook the sugar science and give it a thumbs up!

  2. Absolutely loved it!!! So enjoyable! My favorite part was how Claire felt the need to justify her sugar consumption to her mother! 😂 Can’t wait for the next one!!
