EPIC Japanese FOOD TOUR – Delicious MUST TRY Dishes In KYOTO JAPAN
All righty, fellow travelers. Welcome back to Adventures of a Traveling Don. And today it is raining cats and dogs here in Kyoto. So when it’s raining and cats and dogs, the best thing to do is do a food tour. So get ready cuz we’re about to eat. [Music] [Music] So this food tour is mainly going to be based in kind of like the Nakage ward. This is kind of like the downtown central district uh the commercial district of Kyoto. However, I will also be giving recommendations of places that you might have seen in my two previous videos and a couple of places that I haven’t actually really shared in those videos as well. So stay tuned. There’s going to be a lot. But first off, we’re starting off here at Cafe Sakura Hanan. And this place is very famous and very well known for their fluffy pancakes. [Music] All right, so the fluffy pancakes have arrived and just look at them. Oh, just nice and jiggly and fluffy. I’ve heard they’re very airy, so um I got three of them. They’re supposed to not be super filling. That’s why you kind of want to get other compliment uh things to go with it. And of course, we got bananas here as you see, warm maple butter. Comes with a little bit of ice cream. And of course, uh berry compost as well as a nice steak bacon. So, we’re going to go ahead and dig into this and see how it tastes. All right. So, this little piece is with the maple butter on there. Oh, they are very fluffy, very airy inside. Like not super dense, but man alive, just absolutely fantastic. It does take about 20 to 40 minutes from when you order to get your food. They’re making pretty much everything in-house fresh. Um, and then when you look at the menu, it is all kind of like you can start with the basic, then they have a bunch of different combinations you can do or you can kind of create build your own pancake. Yeah, this is with the berry compost. Oh, that compost is fantastic. Really, really good. And then we’ll try with a little bit of ice cream. Fantastic. And now we’ll try a little bit of this steak bacon. I think this is It says steak bacon. I think this is still pork, but it’s kind of like a very thick piece of cut. Yeah, that’s still pork. That’s really good bacon, though. [Music] So after you’ve had your breakfast and you want just some coffee or you want some coffee kind of just beforehand, uh few blocks down south from Sakura is a place called Bashin Coffee and they make their own kind of blends from beans from all over. I got myself a Guatemala blend here mix. Oh, that’s good. strong, too. But what’s cool is during the daytime they’re a coffee bar, but at night they turn into a kind of like a karaoke bars and live music and band. So, it’s definitely you can have both a nighttime and a daytime coffee here. So, cheers. [Music] Good way to wake up. [Music] I wanted to share with you guys a few other places for the morning coffee or for breakfast to check out while you’re here in Kyoto. The first one being a place that, and don’t laugh at me, is Meme Me Coffee House or Mimi Mei. I think because it’s me in Japanese, it’s me, not me. But the first time we looked at it, it’s like Mimi me. No, but it is. I believe me coffee house. Beautiful coffee house, by the way. Fantastic. They have more of the traditional style small pancakes along with you can get a fried egg on top, some bacon, and the coffee is fantastic. Second spot I would definitely recommend for particularly for breakfast would be a place called Cafe Du Kyoto. That’s over near the Han Jingu Shrine. Uh, and that is the one if you saw that particular video uh where I basically had this fantastic uh yogurt with like frozen berries that was just it was great on a warm kind of uh warm hot day. Absolutely fantastic. Their coffee was really good as well. Third spot and this is more specifically just for coffee is Nashinoi uh Shrine or basically coffee base Nashino. I think there’s a couple of different coffee bases around Kyoto, but this is the one near Nashinoi Shrine and it is I believe it’s in one of those old style Machia tea houses um that is just outside the walls of the imperial palace grounds and it’s so beautiful. It’s on this kind of small narrow path to Nashinoi Shrine which is definitely worth a visit as well. But the the that little coffee house is just it’s got its own little garden and you’re just kind of like sitting in this zen garden. It’s just absolutely fantastic coffee. You can get like a little chestnut bun as well. Phenomenal. [Music] So, while you’re walking around and doing a food tour in the commercial district here in Kyoto, uh, come to the Takashimaya Department Store, and it’s got pretty much everything you need. It’s eight floors of cosmetics, clothes, you you name it, they pretty much got it. They even have the uh Kyoto Nintendo store up on the seventh floor which of course had to geek out and go up there for a little bit and uh check it out. But on the basement one floor is where they have the food hall. And this has got delicatisonens. This has got bakeries. It’s got all the great stuff even supermarkets and stuff like that. But they’ve got a kind of like a couple of alleys here where you can come and get some food from sake to wine to whatever you’re thinking and of course get some fantastic sushi as well. So had to try this nice fatty tuna roll. Oh, absolutely delicious. You wouldn’t think it in the US food places in like stores, department stores, usually kind of hit or miss, but here in Japan, I’ll go to these places anytime. Fantastic. [Music] All right, so we’re starting to close in on Nishki Market, but Teramachi Shopping Street is one of the many shopping covered shopping streets, by the way, that you can come to when you’re here in this downtown part of Kyoto. And if you’re looking for some tea, not to drink here on property, but some to take back to your room back home, Horido has been here. This is a tea stall in the middle of Teramachi Street that has been there since 1803. Probably since before all of this was around, at least in the form that you see now. You talk about history, it is absolutely fantastic. The ladies in there know what they’re talking about. And don’t be afraid to speak English. They do speak English in there. And it’s just you can smell and kind of get all the whiffs of all the different types of teas, the senchas. It’s just phenomenal. So, we actually got ourselves nice little bag of tea to take home with us because we still got a long road and I need some green tea. [Music] [Music] So, while you are visiting the Nishiki market, take some time to stop by the Nishiki Tenmongu Shrine. It is a beautiful little Shinto shrine literally in the middle of all of this shopping chaos and just go there and you know pray for health, wealth, and maybe that your significant other just does not bankrupt you with all the stores and everything or you bankrupt yourself eating everything here. May or may not work. But either way, it is a fantastic little shrine. You definitely got to check it out. [Music] So, Nishiki Market is just a bustling hub of just food stalls everywhere. There’s other shops, but it is mostly all about the food and the smells. Walking through this market, it’s phenomenal. They do have a little food court you can kind of step into called the Nishikiza. I believe I got that right. Food court. And of course, we’re going to get a little tempora while we’re here. Oh, that batter is fantastic. A little tempora sauce on top of that. Shrimp’s phenomenal. Looking for a nice budget eat. It’s about 600 yen per 10 pero or you can get three for 1,500 which is not too bad. Not a bad price at all. [Music] So I’ll let the first few courses digest. I figured we’d come and get some sake while you’re here at the food market. So got a little nice little sake that actually comes with the cap is also the cup. So, compai to you guys. Oh, nice sake. And it’s actually cheap sake. It’s about 800 yen for this whole little bottle here. And uh we get to sip on this and watch some very fascinating kabuki theater on the TV here. It’s a little funny to watch, but absolutely fascinating. [Music] A 3. [Music] [Applause] All right. So, for literally the piece that exists, we are here at a place called Miyabi here in Mishiki Market. And this is a Tanyaki A5 Wagyu style restaurant. And oh man, we got 200 kg to share of this premium beef from I think it’s uh Yamagawa. Yeah, I think it’s Yamagawa is where they got it from. And it just Oh, looks absolutely phenomenal. So, we’re going to try this real quick. Like butter. That just melts in the mouth. Oh, absolutely phenomenal cut of beef. I’ve been wanting to try this for a while and finally, you know, in Japan got to experience that and oh, oh, even their miso soup is phenomenal. That is just top of the line. Really, really good stuff. [Music] Heat. [Music] [Music] [Applause] Heat. [Music] All right. So, I said piece of resistance over at the uh Tanyaki place with the beef, but I figured we might as well just get a little dessert to finish us off. And we’re literally right across the row here in Mishiki Market at a place called Sugi Honey. So, they’re mainly a honey shop, but they’ve got some excellent ice cream where they have the honey that Oh my god, that ice cream is phenomenal. And then you just get a little bit of that that honeycomb mixed in there. That is just absolutely fantastic. Comes a little wafer, too. Oh. All right. That’s a great ending. All right, guys. So, that’s going to be the end of this food tour video here in Kyoto. There’s still so much more to get to, but I’m slowly running out of time here in Kyoto. And we’ll be heading off to I’ve got one more thing that I want to do while I’m in the area, but outside of the city, and then we’ll head to Osaka and Nara after that. But this is kind of like a little rundown of some of the food places that I was able to get to today and also what I was able to get to uh throughout the week that I have been here while I was visiting all the shrines and the history here. And Kyoto is absolutely fantastic. Not just for the culture and the history, but the food too here is just phenomenal. That sukiyaki from a couple days ago was oh so good. And even the beef tonight was amazing. Honestly, that that ice cream at the end with the honeycomb in there, that was topnotch. Also, so good. I love Nishiki Market. Best takoyaki I have ever had!
Awesome day in Kyoto! Loved all the places we went to. Not only was the food amazing, but everyone was amazing towards us. It’s a lost art here in the USA. We’re back in the states now, and want to go back.
I’m excited and hungry! ❤
Let me know what your favorite Japanese dishes are.
Best Sukiyaki experience I had in Japan. So good
