Japan Okinawa Walking Tour | Discover Tropical Botanical Gardens, Plants & Flowers

Hello everyone 😊
I hope you are doing well πŸ‘ In this second part, I invite you to discover the “Tropical Dream Center” located in “Ocean Expo Park” in Motobu (Nago) Okinawa. The Tropical Dream Center covers about 6 hectares of greenery. It includes three greenhouses exhibiting various tropical plants, including more than 2,000 orchid specimens. Besides orchids, there are tropical flowers, subtropical flowers, and fruit trees. The idea of β€œplant ruins” is a well-thought architectural concept. Here, the buildings blend into nature. Over time, the brick walls age and the vegetation covers them, reinforcing this β€œruin” effect. The outdoor areas feature landscaped gardens and ponds integrated into the architecture. This is also where you can find African baobabs. These trees came from seeds brought back from Kolkata (India) around 1979.
The first flowering took place only 19 years later, in 1998. If needed, audioguides are available to explain the exhibited plants. A guided visit called “Flower Guided Tour” is also offered every day at 11:00 and 14:00 (duration ~30 min). Here is a lotus pond. There are also many “hidden” paths that come and go. The “Tropical Dream Center” is located in OCEAN EXPO PARK, for which I published a video last week. As a reminder, OCEAN EXPO PARK is a vast complex dedicated to the sea and nature, with various tourist and cultural facilities. OCEAN EXPO PARK is one of the must-see attractions if you come on vacation to Okinawa. The Tropical Dream Center has a 36-meter observation tower to view the gardens and the sea in the distance. Here, even outdoors, flowers bloom all year round, offering a colorful spectacle in every season. This place is a true haven of peace. The titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) is one of the largest flowers in the world. Native to Sumatra, this incredible flower is endangered on that island.
The reason: massive deforestation caused by oil palm plantations. Its blooming is β€œrare and spectacular.”
With a foul odor, its putrid smell attracts flies that come to pollinate it. It can be pollinated only for 24 to 48 hours (when the flower is fully open). The yellow stigmas at the top are the female part and can be fertilized ONLY on the first day. ONLY on the second day, the male anthers below release their pollen.
(This prevents self-pollination) This year, two flowerings have taken place.
And here are the next two specimens. Inside the Tropical Dream Center, you will find a “CafΓ©” area to have a meal. A souvenir shop is also available right at the entrance of the park. These are Arowanas (Dragon Fish). Among the souvenir items, you will also find green plants offered for sale. The center also highlights magnificent orchids that visitors can purchase. To complete the experience, a small exhibition room is set up… … it will particularly delight children, since they can observe various live insects there, including beetles.
