Did you know that Stephen F. Austin State University is home to a world champion track & field athlete? Jarvis Anderson is a junior at SFA, and last year at the World Deaf Athletics Championships in Taipei, he captured gold medals in the 110m hurdles and 4X400 relay.

Anderson, the reigning Southland Conference 400m hurdles champion, is gearing up to compete internationally once again. The Taylor, Texas native is in Tokyo for this year’s Deaflympics, an international multi-sport event for deaf athletes held every four years and organized by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD). This year’s competition marks the 100th anniversary of the inaugural Deaflympics, held in Paris, France, in 1924, and it will be the first time the competition has been held in Japan.
Anderson is set to compete in five events: 110m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles, 4x100m Relay, 4x400m Relay, and Triple Jump. At the last Deaflympics in 2022, held in Brazil, Anderson brought home four medals.
