20 MUST TRY Indonesian Street Foods in Jakarta – NASI GORENG, BAKSO, MARTABAK + Jakarta Street Food
Jakarta, Indonesia’s largest city, where tradition and modern life collide
in the most delicious way. This city is powered by spice and street food smoke, alive with sizzling woks, crackling grills,
and glowing flames. On our latest trip to Jakarta,
we dove into its endless flavours. From fiery sambal and peanutty gado-gado, to smoky satay, sweet martabak, savoury fried rice, and comforting bowls of bakso. We’re taking you with us from street-side warungs
to late-night stalls, uncovering the heart of Indonesia one bite at a time. So get comfy, and let’s dive into the chaos, colour,
and incredible flavour of Jakarta. Chili one? One. Palm sugar. Some garlic. Salt. Ooh, peanut butter! Tofu? Tofu. Rice cake? Rice cake. Ooh, and some bean sprouts. Ahh, rice vermicelli? Rice vermicelli. Sweet soy sauce? Sweet soy sauce. Crackers? Crackers. We are starting our day off here
for breakfast with this super hearty looking dish. Now, this is Ketoprak. And what it is, it’s a vegetarian dish
that consists of slices of fried tofu, along with the lontong,
which is the steamed rice cake that was in deep banana leaves. And the thing that makes this dish so
special is this thick, thick peanut sauce. You can see here, I love peanuts. And he actually made it
fresh, with palm sugar, and peanuts, and he mashed it together
with chilies, garlic, some sugar. So, this looks, and smells so peanutty. And we got some Krupuk,
which is kind of like a fish cracker or like a shrimp cracker. Okay, let’s crush
our krupuk onto our ketoprak here. You get so much of the krupuk here,
and it’s so crunchy. You can see that we have bihun, the rice vermicelli,
along with bean sprouts as well. Okay. Let’s get a nice big bite here. And you can see the nice slices of the fried tofu there as well,
just drenched in that peanut sauce. First Indonesian street food
bite here. Cheers. Oh, wow. That is so peanutty and delicious. Oh, my gosh. Delicious. Very delicious. So delicious, ooh. I just can’t describe,
how peanutty the sauce is here. The chili that he mashed up into the
sauce as well, is actually, super spicy, I’m already sweating. But, the flavours
that textures of this dish. I really love that crunchy bean sprout,
along with the krupuk, the crunchiness of that. But, it mixes so well,
such a contrast to the soft fried tofu and the soft lontong,
he rice cake there. Just so hearty, and again,
just drenched in that peanut sauce. Mmm. Anything… With a peanut sauce, in my mind, is amazing. I just want to show you
how soft the lontong is here. The steamed rice cake. Look at that. Just so soft. The rice cake taste is so nice. It just soaks up that peanut flavour. The addition of the bihun
rice vermicelli is a nice, addition. But, to be honest, not even needed
because the lontong and the fried tofu are already are so, so filling and hearty. Mmm. So many ingredients, though.
This is jam packed. My favourite part of this dish has to be that thick peanut sauce
that he made from scratch. It’s so cool to see
the sauce made from scratch. This is a great way to start our street
food tour of the Menteng area here in Jakarta today. Mmm. Peanutty goodness. Mmm. Our next meal this morning is for one of the
most popular dishes here in Jakarta. Soto Betawi. Now, this is a coconut milk soup. We got ours with beef, you can get chicken
and other kinds of meat. But it is super fragrant and aromatic,
I can already smell it. Looks so good,
and we’ve got it with some rice. Let’s get some nice lime juice on there. That’ll definitely give it a nice fresh
flavour, too. So we’ve got these
nice little crunchy chips on top. Huge chunks of beef. Look at that. We’ve got some tomato, potato,
some green onions, it looks like. And you can see the broth. It’s really milky and creamy,
but it’s also quite light as well. Look at that. Let’s get a nice, big first bite here. Alright. Cheers. Mmm. Oh, my gosh. Those flavours are exploding in my mouth. It’s just so aromatic
with the lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime, and the coriander,
which is so fragrant. Oh, my gosh, that is delicious. And the coconut milk, mmm. Ooh. Makes it so rich and creamy. And that meat, ooh.
That beef is super tender. And it’s nice with the soft potato, but the freshness and crunchiness
of that tomato as well, mmm. Wow, this is a delicious, delicious
bowl of soup. Ooh. We’ve got some at Achar,
which are pickled veggies. Now, these are served as a side
dish to go with it. S,o let’s add some to our rice, and get a little bit of everything here. Nice. Cucumbers. Carrots there. Get a little bit of that pickily juice there, too. Alright. Mmm… Oh… interesting. The pickled veggies almost
have a bit of a sweetness to them. They’re not, overpoweringly pickled. But just as a nice little bit of extra flavour to it. Ooh, and that rice just super soaks up
that broth so nicely. Mmm. That is, honestly, just so flavourful. I can’t get over this. I can see why this is one of the most popular
dishes here in Jakarta, because… Mmm. Super flavourful. Nice and hot, really helps
you sweat out any toxins. Because it’s not like it’s not hot enough here in Jakarta as it is. This definitely adds a little bit of extra
heat to your day, mmm. I want to get another bite. Of this delicious beef, ooh. It’s packed with beef! It is full of it. She put so much in there, actually, Mmm. Ooh. That meat, seriously,
just falls apart in your mouth. So tender, mmm. What an incredible, incredible dish. Thank you! Very delicious. Delicious, very delicious. Delicious, delicious. Thank you. Bye bye. That was a delicious treat. Sambal? Sambal. Ahh, rendang. Our next stop, we came to a local shop
that sells Nasi Padang. Now, what nasi padang is, it’s rice with a bunch of different
side dishes. You can see behind me they have a whole slew of different
side dishes that you can eat with it. But we got ours with a side of rendang,
which is like slow cooked
beef in coconut milk and other spices. And it makes this amazing
smelling, looking beef here. And here you can see our rice there,
with all the other side dishes. We’ve got our sambal there,
which is very, very big here in Indonesia. You always have to have your sambal
with kind of, any meal that you have here. And we have some jackfruit,
it looks like here. Some sort of green,
it looks like maybe a water spinach. And… this powdery…
Not really sure what it looks like there. So we’re going to have to taste that. We got our rice with some sort
of curries and sauce on top as well. And the last thing that we got here
is the Peyek Udang, which is a shrimp cake. Now, look how big this shrimp cake is. So there’s tons of shrimps on top. It’s actually super light
and delicate actually as well. But, just… ooh! You can see there,
it just breaks right off. But, ooh, such a nice fried shrimp
smell to that. So, this is tasty. Let’s dig in. I want to start with this rendang
because we got this special. Wow. Look at the brown colour on this. And you can see, just a huge
chunk of beef there And just marinated to perfection. Look at this. Wow. Look at that on the inside there. It’s almost, like a jerky kind of texture to that,
but just so tender still. And again, the smell just so coconutty
and just spicy flavourful. Alright, let’s try some with the rice here
that we have. Ooh, this looks so good. Mmm. That rendang, so beefy. And flavourful. It’s just an explosion of spiciness in my mouth, mmm. It’s very coconutty,
but also has like a slight spice to that, as well as almost like a lemongrass flavour
to that as well. Mmm. The rice with all that sauce on there, too. Mmm. Just so flavourful. And of course. We’ve got to get some sambal on there as well. Mmm. The sambal is nice and spicy. It’s a chili sambal. That adds some heat to this dish here. Okay, let’s make an ultimate bite here,
look at these pieces of jackfruit here, wow! So soaked in some sort of sauce as well. Get some of this green. Sprinkle some of that mystery, I still don’t know what that is on there,
Get a little bit more rendang, and some sambal. Ultimate Nasi Padang bite. Mmm. Mmm. Wow! What a mixture of flavours. The jackfruit is nice and soft. And still a bit sweet too, to be honest. But, the overpowering flavour
is definitely this delicious rendang, wow! This is definitely the star,
of this whole dish here. Mmm. Now, the last thing I want to try
is this peyek udang. The shrimp cake here. Not sure how to go about it, but… So… crispy. The shrimps are nice and crunchy,
and actually really meaty. But, the whole cake
that this shrimp cake is made out of. It’s almost just like fried batter, actually. So, super delegate. Mmm… salty. Honestly. It’s a nice, crunchy addition. To the softness of the nasi padang here. Mmm. Really nice. Good combo. Places like this shop
that sell nasi padang are really popular
among the locals here in Indonesia. You see behind me, there’s actually a ton
of people eating their lunch here today. And because of the variety of dishes
that they offer, you can really just have any meal
that you like. So, there’s just so much variety
and so much to choose from. And it’s all so, so delicious. Mmm. So good! Thank you very much. Very delicious. Bye bye. This is a great lunch spot here in Jakarta. Definitely visit. This next shop behind me, with this,
plume of delicious smelling smoke, has been cooking up Sate Kambing,
which is goat satay, since 1963. I can already smell this is
going to be delicious. Come on. Look at all this goat that they have behind me
that they’re preparing. We managed to catch them
while they’re getting it all going. It’s going to get pretty busy here
this evening, but, they are just working away, getting these skewers
of the goat ready for the day. This is going to be so delicious. Did you see those pieces of fat
they’re putting in the centre? Ooh… Goat satay! Alright, our goat satay has arrived. And just look at these. They are charred
and grilled to perfection. I can see the fat inside is just glistening. Oh, man. These look incredibly delicious. Come on, take a look at these. So, we’ve got ten skewers of the satay here. And look at that meat. Got this nice peanutty
sweet soy sauce, sauce underneath. Let’s give them a really nice dousing of that sauce,
look at that. Oh, yeah. And we’ve got the Achar,
some pickled veggies on the side. Ooh, this looks incredible. We’ve allso got another sauce for dipping,
and look how sticky this is. This is a sweet soy sauce. Got some spicy looking peppers in here,
and some onion, too. So that looks like
that’s going to be good. But, let’s just take a bite, of this with the peanut sauce. So look at that. You can see, we’ve got huge
chunks of meat. Every skewer has a nice piece
of fat on there, too. And then another chunk of meat
on the end there, ooh. Just look at that. Alright, here we go. Mmm. Oh, my gosh. That goat meat… so tender! Such a nice charred flavour. Let me get this piece of fat, though. Mmm. Oh, my gosh! Just melt in your mouth like butter. But, the flavour of that grill
is so powerful. Honestly, it’s hard to say,
which is tastier, the meat or the fat. Because that fat. Has so much flavour. Picks up the grill from that charcoal, ooh.
But that kambing, that goat, so tender. And the flavour is strong, but not crazy overpowering, just enough flavour of goat. Kind of reminds me,
if you’ve never had goat before, similar to like a lamb, that it’s just a different flavour
than a beef or something like that. A bit stronger, mmm. Ooh, I just can’t get enough, of this sauce, look at that.
That peanut sauce, mmm. Ooh… Just such a nice, nutty flavour. And a bit of sweetness in it too because there’s actually sweet soy sauce
in the peanut sauce as well. I want to get a try of this. Because this looks like it’s
going to be a little bit spicy, so. Ooh, look that sticky… Sweet soy sauce there. Ooh. Let’s see if this has got a spice to it. From these chilies. Alright. Mmm. Oh, yeah. Mmm. That does have a kick to it, mmm. That sweet soy sauce is really nice and sweet. Goes really well with the goat there, mmm. Can’t forget having a little veggie, with your meat. Mmm. That’s a nice fresh crunch. This is definitely one of the places
you need to come to in Menteng, Sate Kambing Jaya Agung
has been around for 60 years now. And they were saying
that they really get going around 5:00pm,
and by about 8:00 or 9:00,pm, they are completely sold out of all that kambing, of all the goat
that we saw them preparing earlier. So, if you want to come here,
which definitely should, make sure you come here early. Or else there’s going to be
no goat left for you because we, and everyone else will have eaten it all. Cheers Mmm. So… delicious. I can’t get over this fat. Thank you very much. Thank you, very delicious.
Oh, so delicious, thank you. Thank you. Must stop here. Hungry Two Travel. We are ending our day
at another legendary spot here in Jakarta. This place has been selling
Nasi Gorneg Kambing since 1958. This is going to be so, so cool to see. It looks like they’re just
setting up right now. They start at about 5:00pm,
but they start cooking at about 4:00pm. So, we’re just waiting to go see
what they’re going to be cooking up. This, is going to be awesome. Kambing? Yes. Wow! Wow! Wow, so he just put in all of the kambing, and in this case,
kambing, he said, is lamb. So, they’re making the Nasi Goreng Kambing,
which is a lamb fried rice. And there is a ton of lamb that went into
this massive, massive wok here as well. So… you can already start
smelling that lamb smell, ooh. This is going to be good. Pineapple juice. Sambal? Sambal, yes. Sambal, wow! Spicy sambal. Sambal! Look at the colour on that sambal, wow. Ooh, spices! Wow, look at all those spices. Spices. Sauce? Sweet soy sauce, ahh. All of that sweet soy sauce. Sweet soy sauce. Look how thick
the sauce is getting, sticky almost. So, in the back you can see that there
cooking up another Nasi Goreng as well. That’s Nasi Goreng Ayam,
so it’s a chicken fried rice. But, this place is known for the lamb,
the kambing, so we’re waiting on this one. Ahh, more spices. More sweet soy sauce? Yeah, sweet soy sauce. Coconut milk? Yeah, coconut milk. Coconut milk, wow. Oil. Ooh, oil. Almost like, butter almost. Wow. The time has arrived. We have our lamb fried rice here. Now, nasi goreng, like I said
earlier, is fried rice here in Indonesia. And it’s one of Indonesia’s national dishes,
so it is beloved by the entire country. You can get so many different versions,
but this one has that lamb in it, it just smells so, so good with all the spices,
the ingredients, the sweet soy sauce that was put in, and just look
how much lamb you get in one serving. So, there’s just so much lamb
that you get on your plate here. And just big chunks of that lamb as well
that was cooking up. Holy moly. This one filled fried rice, wow. Look at that. Okay, let’s get a nice big bite. Mmm. Wow. That lamb, is melt in your mouth,
just soft and tender. The rice actually, is just so flavourful.
You can really taste some of that cumin that they put in there, that gives it that nice dark colour here. Just tastes like a super,
super flavourful fried rice. You don’t have that really strong
lamb flavour. It just really tastes subtle and
just meaty to be honest, and again, huge, huge chunks of the lamb there. Mmm. Okay… This was worth the wait, wow. And the rice does have a slight spice
to it as well because he did add in that super red sambal into the nasi goreng. Just so, so yummy and tasty, mmm. Come take a look at this
fatty lamb meat here. So, you can see, along with the huge
pieces of the lamb meat, you actually have
lots of fatty pieces as well. So, you get a nice mixture
between meat and fat. To really just give it so much flavour. And we got a few things on the side here
to add to our lamb fried rice here. We have our achar,
which is our pickled veggies. So, put a little bit on the side
here, to have a little taste. And of course we have our krupuk here,
which is our little crackers. Love these little guys.
So, let’s… Crush a little bit up into
our fried rice here. And we also got a little baggie of, looks like some fried onions here, so. Oh yeah. Let’s just pour the whole entire bag of that nice fried onion on there. Now, let’s get an ultimate,
lamb rice bite here. With all of that achar,
and the krupuk as well. Ooh. Let’s do it. Mmm. Mmm hmm. Those pickled veggies and the krupuk actually add such
a nice crunch to the fried rice. And just gives it
a nice pickley flavour as well, mmm. That was an amazing ultimate bite, wow. That was so cool seeing the team here
make this fried rice in those giant giant woks over there. And they were telling us that they actually make five woks
throughout the night, and each wok has 50 servings
of the lamb fired rice as well. So, that’s a lot of lamb fried rice. A definite must if you’re in Jakarta,
and around this Menteng area, because this fried rice
is just unbelievably tasty, wow. Mmm. So much lamb as well. Mmm. On day two of our Indonesian food tour, we explored
the South of the city, hunting for Jakarta’s most iconic traditional street foods. Rice vermicelli? Yeah. We’re here this morning
at a very local shop for breakfast to try Bakso. Now this is one of Indonesia’s
most popular street foods. You can find it all over the country. And it is like an Indonesian meatball,
pretty much, but it’s made with a meat paste, so it’s quite fine. And just look at this delicious
looking bowl that we have here. Look how packed this bowl is. So, we’ve got two different kinds of bakso here. Look at these guys. Also, two different kinds of noodles. We’ve got the rice vermicelli noodles,
we’ve got the mie yellow noodles here,
as well as fried shallots, some greens, bean sprouts,
and then this massive piece of fried tofu. Look at that. This looks delicious. Alright, let’s get a nice big bite
of everything to start here. Mmm. Ooh. That actually really surprised me. There’s such a strong flavour
to that bakso. Very strong, and quite oniony too. It was like a little, flavour explosion,
in my mouth. And that broth, ooh. So nice. Clear, very light. Salty, but not overpowering so. That is delicious. And those noodles, both cooked very nicely, soft and chewy. And it’s nice
to have the different textures of the rice vermicelli,
and the mie yellow noodles as well. Ooh, that’s tasty. But we got TWO different kinds of bakso here to try. I want to see what
this one is because, it’s quite different. Look at that.
It’s got something inside of it that makes it a little more coarse
looking. Even the meat, because a regular bakso Is like a meat paste. So, it’s very fine. It’s firm, it’s dense,
just like these guys here. But this one looks quite different. So, let’s give it a shot. Mmm… ooh! Oh, wow. Look at that. So this one, is much more coarse in terms of the meat itself. It’s not a fine paste like the bakso. And I’m not sure what
that is in with it. This one tastes more, meaty. But I don’t know what that is. It’s like a little bit chewy, firm. Almost like a, like a fattiness to it. I don’t know. That’s interesting,
but honestly, very tasty. I can see why this is one most popular
street foods because. It’s so simple, but so flavourful. Mmm. Ooh, and these bakso. You can see. Just how dense and fine that meat is in there. Like I said, so flavourful,
it’s important to try a. Mmm. Going to try a little bit of kecap manis,
that sweet soy sauce. And a little bit of chili sauce. Oh, look at that now, yeah. Ooh. That definitely gives a nice kick to it. Oh, man… That’s spicy. Alright, let’s try this out. Mmm, ooh. Nice and firm. A little hard on the outside
because it’s fried tofu, And there’s a little bit
of something in there. I’m not too sure what it is,
but also just kind of firm. I think it’s a little bit of meat. Almost like the same texture of the bakso in there, mmm. This bowl of the bakso
is completely packed with the noodles and the veggies, and everything like that. But the star for sure is the bakso itself. I just can’t get over
how flavourful these are. This is the perfect way to start our food tour here
in Jakarta today. What a breakfast. Thank you, very delicious.
So good. Thank you. Thank you very much. Really. Thank you very. Ooh, the people here in Indonesia
are just so wonderful. We are here at Soto Padang Mangkuto,
try Soto Padang. Now, this shop has been around for
over 70 years, we were told by the owner. And we were told
that we’re supposed to spoon the soup onto our rice here with krupuk,
and we are also are supposed to have this dish with this delicious looking egg tea. Now we’ve had an egg coffee before, which is the coffee with egg yolk,
but we’ve never had it with the tea. So, this tea is made hot with egg yolk. Whisked up egg yolk, so. oh my gosh, that
smells amazing with that lime as well. Oh my gosh, that smells amazing
with that lime as well. But, let’s dive into this
Soto Padang first. So, the Soto Padang itself is a nice soup noodle with vermicelli,
that bihun vermicelli rice noodles. Has a ton of beef and onions
in there as well, along with potato. Okay, let’s crush
our krupuk into our Soto Padang first. I always love
doing this part here in Indonesia. Okay. So, we were told to spoon our soup
onto our rice here. Oh yeah. Look at those big chunks of
beef as well there. Get all that broth. Let’s get a nice big bite here, ooh. Just smells so oniony actually,
and beefy, ooh. Look at that… wow. Okay, soto padang. Mmm. That soup, soaks up that rice. Oh my gosh. Ooh, that’s really good. The meat is actually kind of chewy,
almost like a jerky consistency with that meat, but, that is super tasty,
really beefy tasting. And the onion, it’s like a double dose
of carbs, with vermicelli and the rice. This totally works. You got the crunchy krupuk,
the seafood crackers as well adds a bit of a crunch
to the dish too, but, mmm. I think the star has to be the soto padang here. Ooh. You can see the colour
of the broth here. It has a nice yellow colour to it. It tastes like there’s almost turmeric
in there, it has a little bit of like that curry flavour, so, super, super flavourful. You can really taste the potatoes,
the onions and the beef. Just, such strong, strong flavours. It’s almost like, a roast dinner
in soup version, to be honest. It’s incredible, actually. Wow. Mmm. Ooh, this is a nice treat, but… Hot egg tea, look at that. I’m going to give this a mix up first,
but I want to try this delicious egg yolk cream
on top there. Just look how thick that egg yolk cream
is there. And, so white and colour
as well with the added sugar. Ooh… Just so rich and creamy. Oh, my gosh. Again, just so, so thick. Wow. Okay, that’s, mmm, amazing. Before I eat all of that off the top,
let’s give it a mix. Ooh… Okay, even though it’s hot
and it’s hot outside as well. This is super,
super refreshing and tasty. Mmm. Ooh, the sweetness
from the little bit of sugar that was added into the egg yolk,
but just the creamy tasting tea. It actually goes super
well with this salty and savoury Soto Padang here. I can see why people pair this off because it does go well together, mmm. I can’t get enough of this cream though, ooh. That’s so yummy. Tofu. Wow. Our next meal today, which has a beautiful
presentation here, is Nasi Liwet Ayam. And this comes from the Solo
region of West Java. And, what makes this special
is the rice. You can see it is just the centerpiece of this dish here
because it’s actually cooked in coconut milk, so it’s very aromatic and fragrant.
There should be a bit of a lemongrass flavour to it as well. And we’ve got it with tempeh,
some tofu on the side. and some Ayam Goreng, which is fried chicken. Got this little piece of fish, too, which looks interesting,
of course, some spicy sambal and what looks to be
some spicy peppers as well, so. This looks incredible and looks fresh,
doesn’t it? Looks fresh! Doesn’t it? Alright, let’s dig in. Alright, first I want to start with this rice. Look at that. It’s nice and sticky there. Ooh, this looks good. Alright, cheers. Mmm. Ooh. Wow. That’s a very interesting flavour. It almost has a meatiness to it. But that is some very rich rice, it is packed with flavour. You can taste that coconut. Little bit of that lemongrass. Wow. That is very interesting. Honestly,
just super flavourful, and just rich. I’d say that’s the number one flavour I’m getting from this. it’s just rich, a little bit
greasy and oily from the chicken stock too, mmm. Ooh. That’s good just on its own. But, let’s try with a little bit of everything. Look at this nice fried chicken here. You really can’t go wrong, I feel like, with fried chicken,
no matter what country in Mmm… ooh! That’s nice and crispy, but, oh, my gosh, so juicy inside. Oh, that is incredible. Mmm, there’s a nice flavour to the skin as well. Whether they rubbed it
or marinated it with something, mmm. That skin… Super flavourful, mmm. Got to have some with the rice. Mmm, mmm hmm. Adds such an extra richness to the bite,
having that rice with it. Ooh. Let’s get in
for some of this tempeh. And this tofu as well. Just want a little bite with everything. Ooh, and this fish. This fish is really interesting. Huh… Okay, super dry, quite salty. Interesting texture for sure. But… yeah, I definitely think
that needs to be eaten with the rice. So, let’s get a bite with everything. Ooh, that tempeh, and the tofu. Is really nice. They’re both kind of…
creamy, if that makes sense. Just soft, rich. Tempeh is nice and dense. You can see
all those fermented soybeans in there. And with that chicken too. Mmm. Wow. Very flavourful dish. And the rice really does
just kind of bring everything together. That’s nice. I think you need to add some sambal. I was just thinking that. It smells pretty spicy. So I’m not going to go crazy here. And I’m just going to put a little bit
on the side and then we’ll just like, work our way in from there,
how about? Alright, let’s get some of this
sambal on there. Ooh, that’s red! Oh, man. This looks spicy. Okay, I’m just going to mix it in a bit. Get a nice bite with the rice here. Okay, so I’ll bite Sambal bite. Okay, at first… Not too spicy. Definitely building, though. Oh, my God. Okay, my mouth is on fire. It’s quite a sour
kind of spice as well, but Oh, man. It’s a good job we just
put that on part of the rice. Okay. Actually, perfect, cucumber to cool it down. Mmm. Oh, yeah, that’s a good combination. Nice to have a little bit of the veggies
as well. The greens to go with it, mmm. And I want to try some of these because, I feel like this is actually
green bean… or something. Doesn’t actually look like a hot pepper, so. Mmm, oh yeah. Oh… those are really nice. So it’s actually green beans.
Oh, those are tasty. Just savoury. I think you need an ultimate bite. I think you’re so right, Christopher. Oh, just look at how do you see and tender that fried chicken is, ooh. Fried chicken… I am in love with you. Ultimate bite here with a little bit
of everything. Get a little dip… In our sambal. Mmm. Everything works so well together. And that sambal… Has a serious fiery kick to it, mmm. Cakwe? Cakwe. So, we are at Bubur Ayam Barito Now this is a street
food institution in this neighborhood, and we are here for Buber Ayam.
Now, what bubur ayam is, it’s a chicken rice porridge. And you can see here,
that this one is just absolutely packed, filled to the brim with ingredients. Holy moly. Let’s go through
what we got here. Just look how absolutely
overflowing this bowl of chicken porridge. Bubur Ayam is. So, we have all these nice pieces of the diced up chicken,
along with fried shallots, some celery. And what makes the bubur ayam
here special Is the use of what I think is
cheese sticks here. So, very interesting. We have the Cakwe here,
which is the fried dough, fried doughnut,
almost like a Chinese youtiao. And just so, so much ingredients here. And, we got ours with a telur, an egg
that was cracked on the bottom. So, let’s just mix up this bubur ayam here. Oh, my gosh. It’s so full. Oh, I think I see the amazing egg
yolk there. Oh, wow. Look at that! Oh, my gosh. Absolutely cooked now after being poured
on with that rice porridge. Oh, my gosh. So orange! So orange. And just, there’s just so much to this bowl. Holy moly. Where do you begin? Okay, let’s get a big bite here. Oh, wow, look how just thick this rice porridge is, wow. Ooh, this looks incredible. Cheers. Mmm. Just so hearty, mmm. Like with all the delicious rice porridge in Asia, they sprinkled
white pepper on there as well. So, it’s got a nice
white pepper taste to that. But, just everything in here
is just crunchy, really. The cakwe, the Chinese doughnut is crunchy. These cheese sticks are super crunchy,
so it adds such a nice crunch to it. And the amount of chicken in here. Just overflowing with chicken flavor, mmm. The chicken, is not dry at all.
It’s nice and tender. You can just see how thick the
bubur ayam rice porridge is. And I love my congee, my rice porridge, bubur, really thick. And this, it just really doesn’t
get thicker than that, wow. The sprinkle of the fried shallots on top there really give it a oniony flavour
as well. Mmm. That use of that egg yolk. Just makes it so creamy as well. I want to get, another bite. With that orangeness. Ooh, you can see there,
just orange, filled, packed. This is an amazing bowl. Mmm. This bubur ayam actually is just so unique
with the use of these cheese sticks. And they actually do taste
like cheese sticks. Has such a nice cheesy salty flavour. Adds the perfect crunch to the bubur ayam. Mmm, so crunchy. And this bubur ayam
is piping hot as well because they have a couple of huge,
huge pots brewing out back there. But, I can see why
this is such an institution here. This is the definition of street food. Just right on the street,
on the side of the road here. And this place has been around since 1992. So, they’ve been selling Bubur Ayam
for so long. Just a great place if you want
an unbelievably packed bowl of bubur ayam rice porridge. So good. Thank you very much. Oh, so delicious. Ooh, so, so good. Very delicious.
Delicious. Definitely pay this place a visit
if you’re in Jakarta for some delicious bubur ayam, ooh. So good, thank you. Bye bye. Our next stop is a really popular street
food in this area. Come on. Curry? Yeah. Can we get one? One? Thank you. Smells so good. Wow, look at that. Ooh, look how rich that is. You can see the smoke coming up. They’re actually heating it up
with a wood fire from underneath. Very local, kind of traditional way
to do it. Thank you. Alright, we have our super rich and flavourful looking bowl of gulai here.
Now, this is an Indonesian curry, and in this area they call it Gultik,
for Gulai and Tikungan, which is actually the area. And there’s a load of different shops
that sell the curry on the street like this. But, this place Is known
for having some pretty delicious curry. So, I’m going to dig in here.
This is beef, it’s beef curry, and it looks like we’ve
got some pieces of liver in there as well. We’ve got some fried shallots on top. Rice. And just look at the colour of this here. Super rich, very creamy. It’s made with coconut milk, ooh. Alright. I’m going to dig in here. Let’s get a a nice bite. With a little bit of everything here. Look at that meat. Alright, here we go. Mmm. Ooh, that is super flavourful. That meat, that beef,
is really nice and tender. And even that piece that looks like liver. I don’t think it is because it doesn’t
have the texture of liver. I think it’s
just a different kind of beef. But that curry, all the pulling. It’s super rich and fragrant. That coconut milk gives
it such a nice flavour. It’s a little spicy, but not too spicy
at all, to be honest with you. Not compared
to like an Indonesian sambal or something like that. But just very aromatic. There’s galangal,
lemongrass, coriander, all kinds of flavours going on here. It’s super fragrant, ooh. The sauce just completely soaks
into the rice. Just a really, really tasty bowl of curry, wow. Mmm. There’s really nothing better than eating your street food right on the street
here like this. I swear it just makes it taste better. Mmm. But, we also have some very typical
things that you need to go with your curry, so. They have a number of different
things over here, but the most popular ones are, these marinated looking quail eggs. as well, as chicken skin. Look at this. I’m going to dig straight into this because I love chicken skin. Okay, super crispy, wow! I wasn’t sure if it was going to be crispy or soft. Mmm. That is crispy, salty. Got a little bit of a hint
of a different flavour. I think whatever is making it
yellow, maybe a little bit of turmeric. Mmm. Honestly, it’s just fried chicken skin. So it’s crispy, it’s salty. It’s comforting. It’s so good. Alright, let’s get one of these
little quail eggs here. I’m just going to put them straight in. We’ve also got our nice krupuk here
that we can’t forget. So, let’s get a nice scoop of everything. Our meat, the curry. And of course, this nice little quail egg here. Ultimate bite. Mmm, mmm hmm That crispy krupuk,
with the creaminess of the quail egg, ooh. Just gives such a richness to it
that really completes the dish. Mmm. Definitely recommend
the little side dishes to go with it. It’s a good choice. Delicious. Very delicious. Thank you.
Very delicious. So flavourful. We are ending our street
food tour of Jakarta today at a sate shop
that’s been selling sate since the 1980’s. So this is going to be a good way
to end the night. Rice cake? We are here at Sate Padang Ajo Ramon
for this Sate Padang. Now, this is a special sate,
and what makes it special is the sauce. It’s not a peanut sauce
sate, it’s actually a almost like, thick curry like gravy sauce. You can see here.
We got it with beef, so daging, as well as lidah,
which is beef tongue as well. So, we’ve got a mix of our sate here,
and it comes with the lontong, which is the rice cake as well. This looks super delicious. And, this sauce, come here
and look at this, wow. You can see we got a bunch of fried shallots
and fried onions on the top here, and we have our lontong,
but look at these pieces of the sate there. You can see that beef tongue there,
looks nice and hollow almost on the inside. Super, super cool and interesting looking. And we have pieces of beef, the beef as well. Look at that. Looks like there’s
some sort of spice on it as well. Ooh, just look how thick and sticky
this sauce is. Oh, my gosh. And the smell is incredible. Just steaming hot as well, wow. I’m going to go full beef first
and just try the whole beef sate. Mmm. Wow… The beef, super, super tender. But that sauce, that gravy is so thick, a bit spicy,
like a peppery spicy as well. You can really taste kind of like a curry
taste to that, almost with the turmeric that’s used in the sauce,
as well as the curry powder, mmm. Coriander. Ooh. That spicy is building too. But, ooh, just so thick and delicious. Let’s get some of this lidah, the beef tongue. There’s just so much sauce with
this Sate Padang, ooh. Just look at that. Okay, let’s try the beef tongue now, too. Mmm. Ooh, the tongue, is nice and chewy.
Mmm. But that sauce, soaks inside
kind of the pieces of the tongue, because they’re almost like hollow. But, it just, there’s so much sauce
hiding inside there, mmm. With the tongue,
you can really taste the char from the grill there, the charcoal
of the grill, that’s really tasty. Got to try the lontong,
the rice cake here. Mmm. Nice and ricey, and… Really also soaks up that sauce too. Mmm. Really completes the bite. When you get some beef
with the lontong as well. Mmm. Delicious, very delicious. This sate padang, mmm. The beef and the beef tongue,
it’s first boiled and they use that boiled broth
as the base for the sauce, so. It just gives it such a rich flavour,
beefy flavour. Honestly, satay padang. It’s definitely
a must try sate here in Indonesia. And just the perfect way to end
our Jakarta street food tour here tonight. At Sate Padang Ajo Ramon,
just amazing. And… Ultimate… Sate Padang bite, with the beef
and the beef tongue. With the lontong. Mmm. Perfect. On our last day, we headed to Glodok,
home to Jakarta’s historic Chinatown, tasting vibrant Chinese-Indonesian classics. We are starting our day off
at this legendary Lomie shop that’s been around since 1949
selling their Lomie. Now, what Lomie is, it’s an egg noodle dish
that’s been just covered with this thick sauce,
almost like a gravy here. You can see there. And we got ours with ayam and babi. So chicken and pork. So we got a nice mixture here. We have some limes
that we were told to squeeze in. And just the smell of this coming up
is just amazing. This is going to be a great
start to the day. Okay, let’s squeeze
some lime into this delicious looking lomie. You can see the nice, huge pieces
of chicken there, and the delicious
looking pieces of the pork as well. The grilled barbecued pork there.
Wow. We got some fried shallots on the top
and some greens as well. But just look there. Look at these delicious looking
egg noodles there. Oh, my gosh. So nice and thick. Let’s give our noodles a nice big mix here. You can just see how thick that sauce,
that gravy is. We might as well start our day off
with an ultimate bite, so get some chicken, some beans sprouts in there,
and the pork as well. Oh, wow. Look at this. Ultimate breakfast lomie bite. Mmm. That sauce gravy… Unbelievable. It has a bit of sweet and savouriness
to it, actually. Like a sweet and salty, mmm. That is so good. But, just so thick, coats every part of this dish, all the pork
and the noodles, and the chicken. Wow. But that pork and chicken, so, so tender. The chicken is white meat chicken. The pork has that
distinct Chinese barbecue pork flavour. You can taste the char on there as well. But, just go so well with the noodles here. Mmm. The noodles are also cooked
to perfection. Not too chewy, just nice and soft. And because we have so much sauce,
I just want to have a nice big scoop of it here. Mmm. It almost has, a bit of a sourness as well. So, you got sweet, you got salty,
you got sour as well. This is just flavour packed. And the crunchy greens
and the crunchy bean sprouts add such a nice crispy freshness to
the lomie. Mmm. Delicious, very delicious. So delicious. Very good. Delicious. Oh, my gosh, ooh. Just an amazing bowl of lomie noodles. I really, just love this sauce. You can just drink it like a soup. Mmm. Just so, so flavourful. Yeah. There’s so many amazing,
legendary places to eat here in the Glodok Chinatown area of Jakarta. And this is the perfect way
to start our food tour off with these delicious and saucy lomie. Mmm, mmm hmm. Wow! So, we’ve just come upstairs into this kind of marketish
area in Glodok. There are bookstores and everything like
that around us, so. This is a very local shop,
and we’re here to try Nasi Tim. Now, just look at this dish here. So this is a very local Chinese Indonesian
dish that you find here in Glodok. And it is a stir
fry of chicken and mushrooms in a nice soy sauce and garlic. And then it’s put in the bottom of a
tin with rice on top. And it’s steamed. And then to finish it all off, just like
that doesn’t sound delicious enough. They put a raw yolk on top to mix in. Oh, wow!
Look at that… Yolk! Oh, my gosh. Look at all of that. Let’s just mix it into our rice here. So rich, look at that. Oh, my goodness. The smell coming off of this is incredible. Oh, nice. Look at that.
Let’s get a huge bite. Mmm. That is like the ultimate comfort food. Oh, my gosh. That yolk, makes the rice so rich and flavourful. It’s quite salty, actually, with the chicken
and everything on top. But then once you mix it into the rice,
it obviously kind of like dilutes the saltiness a little bit, but. That is really tasty and so comforting. It’s literally, just a rich bowl of rice and chicken, and that chicken oil
that they poured on top as well. I think that’s where I’m probably
getting a decent amount of that saltiness from. Mmm. Ooh. Just super flavourful. Just get a little bit, of the achar here. Yeah, just throw it all on,
may as well. Ooh, maybe like a pickled onion,
look at these little guys. Alright, there we go, some of the
pickled vegetables. And the onion there.
Okay… Mmm… ooh. Adds a nice freshness to it,
as well as the texture, the crispiness,
the crunchiness, ooh. That goes really nicely with it. And that steamed rice. Such a good texture. It’s such a cool way,
actually, that they cook it. Reminds me of,
like, upside down, like peach cobbler a cake or something like that. How when they flip it over,
you’ve got all the meat on top. I just love how
they put that yolk on there. It adds such a nice flavour to it. Just a hot hug on a hot day. That’s how comforting this dish is. Mmm. Delicious. Chili, salt, tamarind. Yeah. Sugar… Sugar. Yes. Peanuts? Yes. Peanuts. Yeah. Peanuts. Ahh, lime. Lime Ahh, tamarind. Tamrind, yes, tamrind. Green cabbage? Yes, green cabbage. Cabbage. Yes, spinach. Spinach. Yes. Long beans. Long beans? Yes. Bean sprouts Potato. Potato. Ahh, corn. Yes, corn. Tempeh. Tempe! Tofu, tofu. Tofu. Yeah. Okay. Onion, onion. Fried spring onions. Wow. Ahh, egg. Yeah. So, we were walking around Glodok here,
and we stumbled upon this alley and this gem of a restaurant
that sells Gado Gado. Now, this is an iconic Indonesian dish,
one of the national dishes of the country, actually. And what Gado-Gado is,
it’s boiled or blanched vegetables that’s mixed with the special peanut sauce. Now, the peanut sauce is made to order, by hand,
so you can have it however you like. We got it with one chili…
and it just smells. Ooh, and it just smells so peanutty. I love dishes like this
in Indonesia, just so peanutty. I love peanuts,
so this smells and looks incredible. So, we got our gado gado with an egg, as well as all of this
krupuk here you can see. And just look how thick that peanut
sauce is. Oh, my goodness. She crushed up so much peanut sauce
with that palm sugar, as well as garlic and tamarind sauce,
and the chili as well. Making an incredibly peanutty sauce. Like with a lot of Indonesian dishes, this is ingredient packed with all of those
veggies, and tempeh, and the tofu. So, this looks like a hearty, hearty dish. Alright, gado gado bite. Mmmm, ooh. So peanutty. Oh, my gosh. Absolutely exploding flavour of peanuts. Ooh, that is such a good sauce. And we only got one chili that was mashed up
into the gado gado sauce here. But, it is still so, so spicy,
that is incredible, though. All the veggies are so nice and soft,
but still a bit crunchy as well. The potato makes it taste so hearty
and the tempeh and the tofu give it a nice protein kick. The krupuk makes it so crunchy as well. Such a nice, crunchy addition to it. Mmm. I love the peanut sauce. We got to have a bite, with our
hard boiled egg there. Ultimate gado-gado bite. Mmm. That egg just completes this dish. And I love how it’s a vegetarian dish. So, just all vegetables. There’s no meat at all. But to be honest,
I could eat this for every single meal. It’s just so delicious. The flavours,
the peanut sauce, can’t get enough of that. This is truly such an amazing dish. And gado-gado actually means mix-mix
in Indonesian, in straight translation. So , we saw her giving this
such a big mix up. Truly an iconic Indonesian dish Mmm. I love it. Peanuts… ooh. Thank you so much, very delicious! Thank you very much. What an awesome little gem to stumble upon here in Chinatown. Bye bye. One original. And… Chocolate? Durian? Durian, one durian. Perfect. Thank you, thank you so much. These are hefty.
Ooh, and they’re still warm. Oh, my gosh. So we’ve made our way down
a little alley here in Chinatown to this place
that’s selling Pia. Now, these are a mung bean filled pastry. They’ve got a ton of different flavours
from the original to cheese. Chocolate. But we went with, of course, original
because you got to try the original, and durian. So this is going to be really interesting. These are super hefty and still warm. You can you see there’s some nice little sesame
seeds on either side, and they feel lovely and flaky. The pastry on the outside. So, cheers. Let’s give them a bite. Mmm. Ooh. It’s so crispy on the outside. And you can see, look at that
mung bean on the inside there. So this is the plain one, the original. And it’s quite plain, I’d say, like it’s
not overly sweet or anything like that, which is quite nice because that’s what
you should have with a pia. You don’t want it to be too sweet
or anything like that. Mmm. And it’s really nice and flaky
on the outside, actually. Look at that. Such a nice light pastry. Okay, I want to try this durian one, though,
because… Durian, I mean, come on. Ooh, I can smell that durian flavour. Alright, cheers. Mmm. Wow! That, is incredibly delicious. This one… Is a lot stickier on the inside,
much less pasty. And honestly,
it actually tastes like hot durian. A lot of times, things
that have durian flavour are kind of, off. Like, it never quite tastes like durian, but this one just tastes like
there’s actually durian inside of it, like. I can smell that! Can you? It’s literally hot durian. I know for some people, that might be disgusting, hot durian,
but this is actually really delicious. Mmm. Oh, my gosh. I can’t get over how flavourful that is. Look at this. You can see how much more filled this is than the other one
in terms of just being squidgy. That durian, much less pasty. It’s actually creamy, almost, ooh. Mmm. That is incredible. Delicious. Very delicious. Very delicious. Especially the durian one. Okay, I have to say,
this is for sure my favourite. I can’t get over how flavourful this is. Mmm. Officially… an incredible Pia. Got to finish up, with an ultimate… Pia bite. Mmm, mmm hmm. I can seriously smell that durian. Hot durian! We’re now in Gang Gloria or Gloria Alley. And we are about to head into one of the
oldest places here in Chinatown, in Glodok. It’s been around since 1927. And we need a coffee break,
so, come on. So, we are here at Kopi Es Tak Kie
for their delicious Kopi or coffee. Now, like I was saying earlier,
this place has been around since 1927 selling that delicious coffee, now, we got
an iced coffee with condensed milk. That looks amazing. And this super,
super black, strong looking… Plain coffee. It does look really strong. Ooh, so. Cheers. Cheers. Ooh. Ooh! Yours? Okay, mine. I’m just going to go ahead and say,
that is strong, it’s super bold. Really robust.
But, really flavourful. It’s not too bitter, to be honest with you. Okay,
this one is the exact opposite. I don’t know if they use different coffees or not,
because they actually poured out of two different things. But this one is super, super sweet. And, with the condensed milk,
it’s just really nice. Has that coffee flavour,
but not very strong at all, actually. Okay, this one… This is really refreshing because of the ice, too. I was going to say,
you’re saying not strong at all, this one. Super strong, but not too bitter or anything like that, actually. Like, I usually need like a bit of cream
or sugar in my coffee. But this, just black, is actually really nice. I love the atmosphere here
in this building. The location has been here forever. It’s run by the same family
in its third generation now. And it’s just like your typical kopitiam
here in Southeast Asia, where you just have,
you know, a lot of different seats. This place is pretty busy as well. There’s like a table of ten that just showed up. So, this is an institution here in
Glodok Chinatown. These coffee shops are always just like, so welcoming,
and just such a fun place to come and just relax, get a coffee, and cool off, I find. Definitely. This is Chinatown. So, yeah, if you’re ever in the Glodok Chinatown area here in Jakarta, you have to visit this coffee shop
to taste their coffee. Their historic coffee. And this is just what we need to keep us going on this hot day, I think. A nice, jolt! Ahh, pork. Pork. Oh, wow. Wow, pork. Chicken? Chicken. We’re continuing our Chinatown food
adventure on Gang Gloria here. You can just see how much street food
there is in the Glodok area. Just this one little alley alone
has so many places to eat at. It’s crazy. But, what we’re here for is Bakmi, now this is a yellow wheat noodle dish. Super popular around this area. And in Jakarta,
it’s a Chinese Indonesia dish. And we got ours
with three different kinds of meat. So we’ve got,
looks like a ground pork, chicken, as well as the barbecue pork,
looks super tasty. The noodles are dry, as you can see. But we’ve got a bit of broth to put on them,
to kind of wet them up a little bit, so. Alright, let’s get a little bit of broth
on our noodles here just to kind of wet them up a little bit. Just get a little extra on there. Look at all of these noodles. Oh, my gosh. There’s so many here. And we’ve got all this meat, we got some
nice green veggies in there, too. Oh, my gosh.
Look at… This bowl is completely packed. Look at this mound of noodles, I can’t get
over how much is in here. Oh, my gosh. Alright, I want to get a nice big bite here. Here we go. Mmm. Oh, wow. Those noodles are so soft, yet firm,
and they’re just slippery, actually, on the outside with that little bit of sauce.
And the broth that I put on top,
and that pork, nice and tender. Wow. That is so flavourful and sweet, too,
because it’s like a barbecue pork. Ooh, but honestly,
these noodles are seriously where it’s at. They just taste so fresh,
to be honest with you. You look at them. The broth is just sticking to them. Mmm. Ooh. I seriously love… love, love, love,
a dry noodle like that. And they’re so meaty tasting as well. Ooh. This is just incredible,
when it comes to dry noodles. There’s just nothing better, I swear. Nothing at all. Mmm. And there’s so much meat here, underneath. Just look at that. Meat bite. Mmm. Ooh, yeah. Okay… Sweetness of the pork. Chicken is really nice. And the ground meat on top, as well,
nice and salty. Flavourful, mmm. This shop, Bakmi Amoy, has been around
since 1981 selling their bakmi noodles. So this is one of the places to come
and try bakmi in the Glodok area, and I’m really glad we stopped here
because, not only is it a nice little respite from the heat because it’s shaded here,
but these noodles are seriously delicious. I just can’t get over how fresh they taste. Mmm. This is the perfect little bowl of noodles. And by little, I mean big. One of our last stops on our Chinatown street food tour
today is to try an Indonesian dessert staple, Martabak. This guy has been selling his since 1970. Come on. Oh, wow. Look thick that pancake is,
oh man! And you can see it’s cooking on charcoal,
it’s super hot here. Look at all those bubbles forming. Sugar. Sugar! Ooh, butter! Look at all that butter! Oh, my gosh. Wow. You can really smell that. Delicious. Wow. Even more butter! Cheese? Cheese. Ooh, cheese. Ooh, look at that. Chocolate. Chocolate. Chocolate. Ooh, you can smell it, so strong. Ooh, sesame. Sesame. Oh, peanuts? Peanuts, ahh. Oh, wow. Look at all those peanuts. Peanuts. Ooh, condensed milk. Ooh, look at that. Oh, my gosh. Look at that butter. Oh, my gosh. Just a bit more. Okay, so here is our Martabak. This thing is huge. It is so heavy as well. I don’t know how much of it is the martabak, and how much is just liquid butter,
to be honest with you. But we got it half and half. So you saw we got cheese on the one side
and the other side is the sweeter side with peanuts, chocolate,
and just condensed milk, all over it. So, okay, let’s just dig into this thing Oh, man, look at this. So we’ve got the chocolate and peanuts and condensed milk
and just look how thick and buttery this is. All right. Cheers. Here we go. Mmm… Ooh! Wow! That is super decadent. So buttery. So tasty because it’s, like,
sweet and salty at the same time. Delicious, very delicious. Thank you. So good. That chocolate, just completely melting,
looking down and with the peanuts. Super nice. And it’s very sweet, but it’s also savoury because of that butter, it’s got such
an interesting texture to it as well. It reminds me of a crumpet, as it cooks,
all the bubbles go up through the batter, and it creates this sort of weird
linear texture in it. Okay, I got to to go in for another bite here. It’s like a pancake on steroids. Mmm hmm. That was really nice. It’s got a chewiness to it, but it’s
kind of crunchy on the outside as well, from being cooked on that hot griddle. But that butter, is just completely going
through the whole thing. Okay, there’s a sweet. So I want to see if our cheesy side is
maybe a little more savoury. Let’s find a cheesy piece here in this,
massive box. Look at all that cheese. And you can see, again, that texture. That’s very linear. Look at that. But just packed with cheese oh, man. Look at this. Mmm. Ooh, okay. I got to say, that cheese bite,
I think, beats the chocolate bite. It’s a little more savoury,
so it’s a little bit salty, but you still have the sweetness
from the condensed milk. But with the butter in there, too, I’m going to have to say, I think
the cheese side is definitely my favourite. Nothing beats butter and cheese. I mean… Can you really go wrong? I know. It’s just so… look at this as well. So oily, with that butter. I mean, it’s pretty much swimming in
butter there. Look at my fingers. I think for our first Martabak,
this was a super good decision to come here. The martabak is so tasty. And it’s on such a fun little location. We’re actually right
on top of a bridge here, so. Doesn’t get better than that. Ooh! Do you see that crunchy bit there? Mmm. Ooh, that is nice. That whole little outer layer, mmm. And of course, with everything,
you have to have an ultimate cheese, chocolate martabak bite. Cheers! Mmm. Mmm hmm. Alright, we got a little bit of martabak leftover to take home with us, but we have one last
stop on our Chinatown food tour tonight. Come on, let’s go! Thank you, bye bye. Bye! We are ending our day off
with an exotic Glodok Chinatown delicacy. This is Pi-Oh, and what it is…. turtle soup. So, here we have our Pi-Oh, which is turtle soup. Now, this is so exotic and such a delicacy. And what we have to go with
it is our cakwe. Which is the fried doughnut,
like the Chinese doughnut, As well as some parsley, and some lime. So let’s get that in here. But, it just looks like this
bowl is completely packed with turtle meat,
like we’ve never had turtle before. So, this should be very, very interesting. Let’s squeeze a bit of lime in there. Put a little bit of parsley, fresh parsley. And let’s throw
some of our Cakwe, fried donut in there. Just look how packed this bowl is here
with all of that turtle meat. Oh, my gosh. It looks really interesting, too. Look at these pieces, super meaty looking pieces, like that, but also really like, clear pieces
of maybe fat there. And look how dark this piece is here. Maybe it’s turtle skin? I’m not really sure,
but let’s get a nice bite. The smell of this broth,
and the colour is so like, almost orangey because it’s made with a fermented
soybean paste called Tauco. And it just smells like so beany. Alright, let’s get a bite of the meat and what I think is fat there, cheers. Mmm. Okay… Very interesting. First off, that broth, is super flavourful,
very like, bean like, mmm. It almost tastes tomatoey,
but it’s made with that fermented soybean, but. It has such a rich
and almost sour flavour to it. That’s a delicious broth. That turtle meat… it’s very interesting. The fatty piece is super soft, gelatinous,
but that meat, it tastes like beef, to be honest. It’s so dark like beef as well. And just the consistency
and the texture of it reminds me of beef. It doesn’t taste fishy
or anything like that, so it doesn’t have a strong flavour. You can just see how dark the meat is. It is honestly,
almost like a beef like texture. Look at that. Look at the red meat in there. Wow. So, so interesting. But so flavourful. And just look at how dark that piece of, what I think is skin is. Wow. If you would have just told me this was a
beef stew, I would totally believe you. It just tastes like delicious, beef almost. It’s really interesting. Mmm. Ooh. Never had turtle, but, this is delicious. Delicious. Very delicious! So good. Ooh, wow. What an interesting way to end our day. Super, super exotic. A delicacy, but… To be honest, I didn’t think we would be eating
river turtle here in Jakarta. But if you want to taste river turtle, Glodok Chinatown is definitely the place to do it. And… let’s get a nice piece of this… skin? Really soft and chewy. Gelatinous, yeah. Mmm. This is delicious. First taste of river turtle,
I think is a success. This is super tasty. And let’s try a little
cakwe here as well. Mmm. That’s nice. It absolutely just soaked up
this delicious soy bean broth. Mmm. This is, super, super flavourful. But, the star is definitely that Pi-Oh, that turtle. So interesting. Mmm. Yeah. It’s like beef. Sitting here eating turtle soup. I feel kind of like the Shredder
from Ninja Turtles. Turtle soup. Definitely yummy. Mmm. Alright, that does it for our Glodok
Chinatown street food tour here in Jakarta. Thank you all so much for watching.

Aku benar-benar menyukai videomu botak!!😂❤❤
itu bukan lontong mister tapi ketupat 😁😁
That was ketupat not lontong. Different leaves used to make lontong and ketupat
Welcome to indonesia,,
Semoga makananya enak 😂😂😂
I got hungry watching your videos 😭😭😭
Welcome to indonesia and enjoy.
Mantap. 👍👍
I'm glad you enjoyed our food, I'm one of the family who manages the Jaya Agung goat satay food.
Don't forget be happy .. welcome to INDONESIA enjoy
Martabak manis- di jawa Timur namanya Terang Bulan…tapi menurutku terlalu banyak menteganya, didekat rumahku ada yang jual dan tidak sebanyak itu menteganya….seperti makan minyak 😅 i'm sorry too much butter
Btw, that's not lontong, that's ketupat. Lontong has cylindric shape, wrapped by banana leaf Whilst ketupat has rhombis shape, wrapped in coconut leaf
The coarse meatball is a mixture of beef and tendon, we call it baso urat. Some Indonesian prefer baso urat instead of baso halus (the smooth one)
On the martabak part, I think your martabak vendor flipped the cake wrong because I would asking Him to flip the chocolate side on top of the cheese side so I can have mixed everything altogether, and trust me it's super delicious when indonesian cheese mixed with chocolate, I know it's sounds weird to western but it definitely worth to try
Ketoprak mantap bro
Dan semua ada di satu pulau yaitu pulau JAWA
MY FAVORITE SATAY KAMBING❤
as someone who used to workin in that big complex office building, we call that first hallyway in this video is dangerous hallway because you can't never stop eating and snacking until you ran out of money😆
32:13 it is called "bakso urat" or "tendon meatball". that's why it has coarse texture coz it has chopped meat + tendon in it.
FYI, in some other area in Java, people also call it "bakso kasar" or "coarse meatball".
33:33 yes.. there is meat inside the fried tofu. they call it "tahu bakso" by putting a sizable portion of meat paste inside the tofu.
Hope this help answer your question
Indonesia food enak , nikmat and mantap 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩👍👍
The lontong is wrapped in young coconut leaves called ketupat, not banana leaves.
