Plans to light up the fall foliage at a park in Hokkaido, northern Japan, have been canceled due to bear sightings in the area.
Hachironuma Park in the city of Hokuto is known for its stunning fall leaves. The park is over 10 hectares and has about 2,000 trees, including maple and azalea.
A number of bear sightings have been reported.
Residents say they are disappointed by the cancellation. Officials say last year the park drew about 23,000 people in the period when the trees were illuminated.
A man in his 80s said he hasn’t seen a bear himself but heard others say they have seen some nearby. He said he is disappointed that the popular event was called off.
Local tourism association officials said it’s disappointing because they had expected many visitors to the park, and that they hope the event will be held as usual next year.
