โจ Kobe Day Trip from Osaka |Downtown, Chinatown, Port & Kobe Beef Dinner ๐๐ข
In the last episode, we visited the beautiful Kobe Herb Garden and enjoyed lunch surrounded by nature. After exploring the gardens, we took the ropeway back down to Shin-Kobe Station โ And just like that, we found ourselves right in the heart of downtown Kobe. It took about 15 minutes to walk from Shin-Kobe Station to Sannomiya Station โ the busiest shopping area in the city. Kobe is such a perfect day-trip destination from Osaka. All the main attractions โ the Herb Garden, shopping streets, Chinatown, and the port โ are within easy walking distance. We strolled down Ikuta Shinmichi and before we knew it, we were in Motomachi โ the heart of Kobeโs shopping scene. Motomachi is a fun street to walk through โ lots of shops, cafรฉs, and a mix of local and Western vibes. Keep walking and youโll end up in Nankinmachi, Kobeโs Chinatown The vibe here is so lively โ music playing, people lining up for steamed buns, and the smell of delicious street food everywhere. Itโs busy but fun, and thereโs just so much to see and taste. During the 8th century, this area was known as Owada no Tomari โ a natural port that served as Japanโs gateway to Tang Dynasty China. From here, Japanese envoys and monks sailed across the sea, bringing back new ideas in culture, art, and religion that helped shape early Japan. Fast forward to the 19th century, Kobe Port officially opened to foreign trade as one of Japanโs first international ports, alongside Yokohama, Nagasaki, and Hakodate. Merchants and diplomats from Europe, China, and America settled here, building Western-style houses in the Kitano area and creating a vibrant, multicultural community. Today, Kobe Port is a vibrant waterfront filled with shops, cafes, and attractions like Meriken Park and the Kobe Port Tower. Rebuilt after the 1995 earthquake, itโs now one of Japanโs most scenic harbors โ especially beautiful when the city lights reflect on the water at night. A Kobe Port boat cruise is one of the best ways to enjoy the cityโs harbor views. Cruises depart from Meriken Park and take about an hour, As the boat glided across the harbor, the city lights shimmered on the water โ from the glowing red Kobe Port Tower to the illuminated Ferris wheel at Mosaic. The sea breeze was cool and refreshing, and the atmosphere felt calm yet romantic. We were lucky to catch a surprise firework show at the port โ the night sky lit up over the harbor, reflecting beautifully on the water. Of course, we couldnโt leave Kobe without trying its world-famous Kobe beef. The city is full of restaurants serving it โ some elegant and pricey, others small and cozy. We went for a little yakiniku izakaya tucked away on a side street. Kobe beef comes from the Tajima strain of Japanese Black cattle, raised under strict standards in Hyogo Prefecture, where Kobe is the capital. What makes it special is its incredible marbling โ the fine, even fat that melts at low temperatures, giving the meat that signature buttery texture and melt-in-your-mouth flavor. The meal came to 11,000 yen for the two of us. We left completely full and satisfied โ a perfect way to end our Kobe day trip.
