A Day in Uji, Kyoto — Matcha Town & Historical Spots 🍵⛩️
I’ve wanted to visit UjI for a long time, and now it’s finally happening. UjI is famous for producing the best green tea in japan, especially matcha. I was impressed by the station— it’s so aesthetic. Every corner feels photogenic. Excited to wander through this city ✨ On our way to Ujigami Shrine it’s about a 10 minute walk from the station. Even from the entrance, I can already feel the calm atmosphere. Believed to be the oldest Shinto shrine in Japan, built around the 1060s. UjigamI shrine is famous for its ancient architectural style. Built from natural materials like stone, wood, and cypress bark. It was constructed using traditional kigumI (木組み)technique, without metal nails. A quite harmony fills the place, yet it feels alive. Ujigami shrine has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Entrance is free …but you can buy souvenirs if you like. Still reluctant to leave Ujigami, but the journey isn’t over yet. The flow of Uji River looks so calm. Taking a little rest hehe I wonder if it would be possible to get back to Osaka by boat, following the river’s current 😳 Look, a tiny snail! This place is perfect for sitting back and relaxing. The GenjI Statue commemorates a spot featured in a classic tale by MurasakI Shikibu. The weather is perfect today. I really love the reflections on the water, they look like a painting. Arrived at our next destination The image on the 10 yen. To see the reflection of Phoenix Hall in the water, it’s best come between 11 a.m – 1 p.m Entry to Byōdo-in Temple for adults is 700 yen Open from 8:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m There are Koi and turtles here too 🐟🐢 The ticket also includes the Byodo-in Museum, but unfortunately, no photos or videos are allowed inside. This is the main street leading to Byōdo-in Temple Tea shops and matcha cafes line the way. The smell of tea is everywhere I found a souvenir shop full of matcha goodies Little decorations Socks with tea and UjI patterns, so cute ! Kinds of Matcha-based skincare …and of course, tools for making matcha. The Matcha snack stall instantly caught my attention. I decided to get TakoyakI with matcha sauce. It’s surpricingly delicious! I was looking for a shop to buy matcha powder I found a tea shop that’s said to be 400 years old It’s called Kanbayashi Shunsho They sell all kinds of tea here. I even tried smelling each one— even through I don’t really understand much about it hehe Heading to one of the main spots I wanted to visit in Uji. Nakamura TokichI Honten is a tea shop and restaurant …with plenty of dishes made from matcha. It’s quite busy today We waited in line for over 2 hours 😅 The welcome drink is plain tea, but it has such a gentle aroma. I ordered the UjI Tencha Buckwheat Noodles (Zaru) ..and my husband got the UjI Kin Cold Zenzai (Matcha) The noodles are delicious. The matcha sauce mixed into the tsuyu gives a unique flavor. The ice cream is also tasty and refreshing We left right after our meal— many people were still waiting in line. There’s just one more stop today This bridge is over 1.300 years old I think the best time to enjoy the view is in the evening The sky turn warm, the air feels soft—everything feels just right. UjI gave me more than I expected I’ve completely fallen in love with this city If you’re a matcha lover, you have to visit. I’ll definitely come back again someday.
