Hey everyone! Welcome to Day 3 of our Kyushu trip! We’re starting the day from Nakasu-Kawabata, where our hotel is located. Today, we’re heading toward the Tenjin area. It’s about a 500-meter walk from our hotel to Tenjin Station. On the way, we passed by a building shaped like a mountain — it’s called “ACROS Fukuoka.” ACROS Fukuoka is a 14-story green building covered with plants. Since we’re passing by anyway, let’s go inside and check it out! Turns out, it’s mostly concert halls and conference rooms inside. The rooftop is filled with greenery, so from outside it literally looks like a mountain. We just chilled here for a few minutes in the AC before continuing toward Tenjin. We passed Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station. We’ll be taking a train from there later to Dazaifu. If it’s your first time in Fukuoka, take note— the Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station is on the second floor of Mitsukoshi Department Store, not underground! And we’re almost at our first stop of the day. Kego Shrine is right in the middle of the busy Tenjin shopping area. It enshrines Kego Okami, the guardian deity who protects everyday life. Right next to Kego Shrine is Blue Bottle Coffee — perfect spot for breakfast! By the way, for internet on this trip, I’m using Trifa eSIM. Trifa is a Japanese eSIM brand, super easy to use. The app is really simple and intuitive. It uses Japan’s local networks, so it’s fast and super stable. Even streaming videos at the hotel runs smoothly! You can use my channel code for 5% off too! We’re inside now — there are quite a lot of seats. From the big glass windows, you can see Kego Shrine outside. Here’s what we ordered! A seasonal Lavender Yuzu Latte — sounds fancy, right? The hot latte has a lovely hint of cinnamon. And we also got a scone (760 yen, tax included). It came with cheese and jam on the side. But honestly, even the plain scone tastes amazing! This scone was so good. Probably the best one I’ve ever had so far!! Also got a classic iced latte — smooth and refreshing. So good! I always end up visiting Blue Bottle whenever I’m in Japan. After brunch, we took a stroll inside Kego Shrine. There’s also a smaller shrine inside called Imais Inari Shrine. The foxes here are messengers of the Inari deity. Right next to Kego Shrine is Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station — so now we’re heading to Dazaifu! If you’re going to Dazaifu, I recommend taking the “Limited Express” — fastest route! No need to buy any extra express ticket (just like Hankyu or other private lines). We’ll transfer once at Nishitetsu Futsukaichi. Around 12:30 p.m., we arrived at Dazaifu — super quick! Even the station design reflects the famous Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. Finally, time to explore Dazaifu! Once you exit the station and turn right, you’ll see a long, lively shopping street. That’s the Omotesando leading to Tenmangu Shrine. It stretches all the way from the station to Dazaifu Tenmangu itself. Let’s grab a snack first! This shop mainly sells strawberry and matcha sweets. Their most famous one is the strawberry daifuku monaka — but it’s winter-only! So I got the warabi mochi instead. Picked up a strawberry ice bar (500 yen) and Yame tea warabi mochi skewer (350 yen). At first, I thought the ice bar was just a popsicle… but it turned out to be icy konjac jelly! Anyway, let’s keep walking toward Tenmangu Shrine. Here’s the Sumikko Gurashi Shop — the only one in Kyushu! And the Dazaifu Starbucks here was designed by famous architect Kengo Kuma. Just 100 meters ahead is the shrine entrance. We passed a shop selling “Umegae Mochi.” It’s a traditional sweet made from glutinous and white rice flour. Inside is red bean paste, and it’s lightly grilled until golden. It’s super hot right now, so we’ll try it later. The second torii gate is in front of the Acorn Republic. The third torii gate is further ahead, which is the entrance to Tenmangu Shrine! Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is the head shrine of 12,000 Tenmangu shrines nationwide. It is one of the most famous shrines in Fukuoka Prefecture. Let’s go inside and explore! On the way to the main hall, you will cross three red bridges. The three red bridges represent “past,” “present,” and “future,” respectively. The middle bridge, representing “present,” is flat. When standing on the middle bridge… People cannot see the scenery behind the future bridge. This is the last red arched bridge. After crossing this red bridge, you can see the gate of Tenmangu Shrine. After passing through the gate ahead, you will reach the main hall of Tenmangu Shrine. There is a large purification fountain in front of the gate. There are many kinds of amulets, including some with unique shapes! The main hall of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is currently undergoing major renovations (expected to be completed by 2026). What you see here is a temporary main hall (kaden). The temporary main hall is quite well-designed. The principal deity of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is Sugawara no Michizane. Sugawara no Michizane is the god of learning. He was a poet (and also an official) during the Heian period. Therefore, many students facing important exams come here to pray. Most of the ema (votive plaques) are inscribed with wishes for success in exams. There is a Kirin statue next to the temizu-sha (purification fountain). This Kirin symbolizes Sugawara no Michizane’s noble character. On the way back, we passed three more red bridges. We originally planned to visit the nearby Kamado Shrine. However, the weather was just too hot (high of 38°C). Just want to get back to Fukuoka first 😇 Found a shop selling ume-ga mochi called “Chabo Kikuchi” The outer layer of ume-ga mochi is made from a mixture of glutinous rice and white rice. It’s a traditional sweet filled with red bean paste and baked to a light golden brown. Now I need to go back to Fukuoka city. We didn’t spend much time in Dazaifu (less than two hours) But I feel like I experienced everything I wanted to experience. Quite fulfilling! Transferred at Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station on the return trip. Dazaifu is quite nice to visit, and there’s a wide variety of food! Next time I’d like to come during a less hot season. Arrived back at Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station around 14:40. Back in Fukuoka, we first went shopping in Tenjin. Fukuoka even has an app! Ple’s directly operated store I want to go into this mall. The first floor is a trendy clothing store called “Graniph”. The second and third floors are Junkudo Bookstore. I want to buy 3 books. Got a tax refund~ A little regretful for not buying any clothes 🫠 The building in front is Fukuoka Mitsukoshi (the Nishitetsu station is on the 2nd floor) Arrived at Tenjin Underground Shopping Mall The dark-toned decor has a European feel A stylish look I came mainly to buy a famous strawberry milkshake. This shop mainly sells strawberry-related desserts. I ordered a pure strawberry smoothie (¥864 including tax). Their smoothies are advertised as having no added water or ice. We’ll go back to the hotel to rest for a bit. then shopping and have dinner later tonight. We bought some desserts at this shop to enjoy back at the hotel. We strolled back to the hotel along the banks of the Naka River. Back at the hotel. The room is cleaned up. These are the desserts we just bought. A leisurely afternoon tea. Eating cake while looking out the window~ Most of today’s itinerary after returning from Dazaifu was shopping. After shopping tonight, I plan to go to Nakasu Yatai. The riverside scenery at dusk is also charming; I couldn’t resist taking pictures as I passed by. From the bridge, you can see Canal Castle Hakata in the distance; Nakasu Yatai is also nearby. There seems to be an event in the plaza in front of the city hall tonight. It’s a month-long summer festival. There are mainly vendors and some performances. I was acting alone just now, I’m going to meet up with my family later. We arrived at Canal City Hakata. Canal City’s opening hours are from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM. I just bought some clothes, I think it’s quite nice to shop here. Canal City Hakata has a water dance performance in the central square every hour on the hour. It will start in a few minutes. People are gradually gathering in the square. The curtain for the light show has been drawn. Behind the projection screen is the Grand Hyatt Fukuoka. The hotel and shopping mall are connected. The theme of the water show changes frequently. What I see each time I come might be different. I don’t quite understand it myself, but kids would probably like it (?) We’re going to “Nakasu Yatai” near Canal City now. The riverbank from Canal City Hakata to Nakasu-Kawabata Station is the Nakasu Yatai area. This time I came to Fukuoka and wanted to experience the famous local yatai culture. “Yata” means roadside stalls, most of which operate at night. Fukuoka’s food stalls are concentrated in three areas: Nakasu, Nagahama, and Tenjin. Even though it’s a weekday, there are still many tourists visiting. It looks like many food stalls have queues. Let’s choose a food stall for dinner (sudden snack) tonight. We didn’t do any special research before coming. So let’s take our time exploring now. Let’s look for a place that interests us (and doesn’t require a long wait). There are 4 more food stalls across the street. We finally chose this food stall for our late-night snack (we overheard the staff say they had seats). The stall’s name is “Yocchan”. The map is in the information section below. After we’re seated, the staff will tell us “Drink”. “First” means to order drinks first. This is what I ordered: oden and cola. I also ordered a bowl of ramen (¥800). This is Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen. It tastes even better than I expected! 😆 This is fried mentaiko (grilled mentaiko) ¥950. It’s quite delicious too! My family ordered a grilled ramen (¥1000) The taste was quite unique, but it was a bit dry. I think the broth-based tonkotsu ramen is better. There was a braised egg in the ramen (?) I’m full 😋 I enjoyed it quite a bit, even though it wasn’t cheap. But after all, this is a tourist attraction. A stroll along the river after dinner is very relaxing, and the hotel is nearby. Fukuoka’s yakitori (street food stalls) are actually quite similar to Taiwan’s night markets. Everyone comes to experience the lively atmosphere. So, it’s advisable not to have too high expectations for the food when you come. You’ll be pleasantly surprised if you get lucky and order some hidden gem dishes! Today’s itinerary is mostly over. Tomorrow we’ll be leaving Fukuoka for other parts of Kyushu! Thank you for watching until the end. See you in the next video!
