Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji has seen the first snow of the 2025-26 season. Fuji City confirmed the sighting of the first snow cap on the iconic peak on its Twitter (X) account on October 23, stating, “The first snow of the season! This morning, taken from the city hall #fujisan. We could see it adorned with a snowy veil.”
While the first snow came sooner than last year, it has arrived 21 days later than the historical average. Last year, the first snow was recorded on November 7, the latest it had ever snowed since records began in 1894. Nevertheless, the 2024-25 season turned out to be one of the best in recent memories. Snow typically appears on Mount Fuji in most years by October 2.
Mount Fuji is located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south-west of Tokyo. The 3,776-meter (12,388-foot) mountain attracts over 220,000 hikers yearly, mostly during its snow-free season. Mount Fuji is a bucket-list destination for many travelers, and while its last eruption was three centuries ago, in December 1707, it’s still classified as an active volcano.
Although Fuji is better known as a climbing destination, there are two ski resorts at Mount Fuji: Snow Town Yeti Resort and Fujiten Snow Resort. Yeti was the first Japanese ski resort to open for the 2025-26 season, opening on October 24. Yeti has a history of being the first resort to open, opening a small strip of man made snow each season with a big dress-up opening day.
Snow Town Yeti, also known as Snow Park Yeti and Fujiyama Snow Resort Yeti, operates at an elevation of 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) to 1,450 meters (4,757 feet) and offers spectacular views of Mount Fuji on clear days. The resort began operating in 1971 and was originally named Nihon Land Ski-jo.
