US President Donald Trump is set to arrive in Japan on Monday, one day before he meets new Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae. The expected agenda of the summit includes Japan’s defense capabilities and its plan to make a massive investment in the United States.
An aircraft carrying Trump is due to leave Malaysia, the first leg of his Asia tour, on Monday and touch down in Japan later in the day for his three-day stay in the country.
It will be his fourth visit to Japan as US president and his first since June 2019, when he attended the Group of 20 summit in Osaka. It will also be his first trip to the country during his second term in office.
Trump plans to meet Emperor Naruhito on Monday. The president is scheduled to hold a summit with Takaichi on Tuesday and visit Yokosuka base, south of Tokyo, on the same day to deliver a speech onboard an aircraft carrier. He is also due to have dinner with business executives in Tokyo.
Trump has recently expressed hope that he will build “a fantastic relationship” with Takaichi.
Meanwhile, Trump has maintained that Washington will select destinations of Japan’s planned investment of 550 billion dollars in the United States.
The investment is a component of a deal reached by the two countries as a result of their negotiations on the tariff campaign by the Trump administration.
The US president has also repeated his appeal for countries to play greater roles in security.
Trump and Takaichi are expected to use their meeting to talk about ways to implement the Japanese investment and how to improve Japan’s defense capabilities through such methods as raising relevant expenditures.
