Just 10 minutes ago, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Nemuro, Nemuro-shi, Hokkaido, Japan. The tremor was recorded early evening on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025, at 6:17 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 48.40 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Hamanaka-sakuraminami (pop. 5,500) located 38 km from the epicenter, Nemuro (pop. 31,200) 42 km away, and Akkeshi (pop. 8,900) 52 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Nakashibetsu (pop. 24,000) located 78 km from the epicenter, Shibecha (pop. 7,200) 82 km away, Shibetsu (pop. 21,700) 83 km away, and Kushiro (pop. 167,900) 90 km away.
