Arriving in Osaka! Kansai Airport to City on the Nankai Airport Line
I know what you’re thinking, guys. By Jingo, does he look rough? And if you want to know why I look rough, it’s cuz I’ve just been on a plane for the last 20 hours coming from uh Manchester all the way to here, Osaka, Japan. We’ve just landed. We had a nice long layover. Actually, wasn’t too bad in uh Shanghai. Nice airport, mind. I must say the lounge was good and the food was nice. Didn’t vlog any of that because sometimes those trips is just not worth the hassle. But now we need to get it from Osaka airport, which is actually a man-made island out in the middle of the sea. When you fly in, it’s an absolute amazing piece of engineering. Really like fantastic. I was unfortunately on the aisle seat, so I couldn’t show you guys. I just got a quick glance when we banked over, but wow. Amazing. Right, I’ve already done one thing here, which is going to the JR ticket office upstairs, which is where I am now, upstairs from the airport, and picked up my JR pass. So, I’ve got a a Japanese railway pass that bit essentially gives me unlimited rides on most trains, but not all. And I got myself the the upgraded one. So, we’ve gone for the green car, meaning we just get a little bit of a a better seat, a little more space. I’m not sure if we get any refreshments. We’ll find out along the way. You’re you’re learning as I am, so I’m as new to this as anyone. I’ve never been to Japan before. It’s all new to me. It’s going to be a laugh. I’m sure we’re going to make some mistakes along the way. But this video is not about that. This video is about us getting from Osaka uh airport to well getting into town. And we need to take a train that’s actually not covered by my JR pass. We need to take the uh Nankai line which is right here. So we’re going to get ourselves on the Nankai line. Have to buy ourselves a ticket. And we’re getting off at stop. Let me just check. My brain’s fried guys. Sorry. I can’t remember the stop. I need to get off at Ten Gapaya. Tengataya station. Now, I don’t know how we get a ticket. Maybe we can just tap in and tap out. I’m not quite sure. Let’s have a look. Maybe there’s some information here. Visit Osaka Rapid to get a ticket. To take this train, both ticket A and B are required. Oh, wow. How complicated. Well, I’ve noticed that on a few things since I’ve already been here actually is some things are a little more complicated than I think they really need to be. I think also like coming through um not yeah customs was like it took longer to get through customs than immigration. Very weird. Uh some stuff like their computers are using look a bit old school. I feel like they were probably very advanced when they came out but then they’ve peaked early. So we need to get a ticket and I’m not really sure how. Right guys, I think actually we need to buy a ticket from over here. I’ve just realized there’s a giant wall that says ticket office. So you know one would think you probably want to go to the machines. That’s your tickets. So far, all the staff have spoke very good English, but you would expect that cuz you’re in an international airport, a big one. But I know if we get a bit further a field, they’re not going to speak as good English, which is to be expected cuz we’re not in England, we’re in Japan. But this is where machines come in clutch because you can always usually set them. They’ll always have English, which is exactly what we need. So you can see all the different lines there, and you can see there actually. Okay, so we’re in Kanzai airport here and we need to go there to Tang Chaya and then from there we need to take the metro but that’ll be in the next video. Right. Oh yes that I guess. Does it take card? Yes, it does. Cash it is then. Is that everything? Excuse me. Right. Well, that was uh a little bit hasslesome. So, I have my ticket. I’m not actually sure if it’s correct because something said I need two types of ticket, but it didn’t. But I’m not sure. So, but I had to use cash there. Wouldn’t take me card. Again, the machines look very archaic. They look straight out of like 2005. So, we’ll see if we can get on. Um, cost me 970 yen. I’ve right, we’re in. Okay. The ladies seem to think that was fine. So, now we need to get on the line. Yeah, it’s a bit confusing. It’s not as uh cleancut. I don’t know. Maybe you can buy them online, but I I couldn’t see. Maybe there’s a separate app. And I know there’s like different cards as well. But the problem is because I’m not staying in one city for very long. I’m only I’m basically hopping from city to city while I’m here. It’s no point getting a card that’s just for one city. So for Saka Namba, I’m not sure actually which side we need to go to. So we’re going Namba for Namba. Yep. This is us. It’s the Osaka number. And we’ll go down down the escalators. Yes. First taste of Japan. It’s very warm. Much hotter than it was back home. I thought it’ be a similar temperature to be honest. Very humid. But I will say, as you can see, I’m sweating. I have this coat on cuz me bag’s full at the minute. But uh it’s a it’s very pleasant because I’ve been on a plane and the air is so dry on planes. So yeah, let’s have a look at the station. So platform one, this is for Namba. This is what we want. So that must be your rivals and this must be our side. Yes. So your house we’re going to Namba and we need to get off a couple stops before that. Yeah. For Osaka Namba Wakayyamashi change at Izu Misano. So this is where we are now guys and we need to go to there. So I presume this is our train maybe. Well I don’t know. It looks a bit too fancy for us. I think I think what we want is just a normal commuting train. Look at the front of this though. How cool is that? Wow. I like Look at that. That’s awesome. Yeah, this must be a different train because look at the seat configuration here. This is a bit posher than just a commuter line. What we want and look how big the windows are. That’s great. I really like the windows on this. All reserved seats. Yeah. So, this train is all reserved seats and I don’t believe we have a reserve seat. We’ve just got get on where you can get on sort of thing. Guys, this trip’s going to be a learning curve for both of us. So, normally I’m in Poland and I know that place at the back of my hand now. I know how it all works, but I can’t say I know how Japan works at all. Yes. So, that’s the one that we’ve just seen, the Limited Express Rapid. I don’t think we paid for that one. That’s that one there. Maybe we want this one. I don’t know. Very. Yeah. Not not clear for me. Oh, this is also for Namba. Excuse me. Is this going to uh Tangaya? This one. This one’s going This train is from Namba. Yeah. And we’ve got the uh this player there. So, I think we’re on the correct one. I think that’s why it said you need to have the two tickets was if you’re going to take that other posher train, but because we’re not going to take that, we’re okay with the cheaper ticket, which is fine. Let me just check how much that is as well. 970. That’s £485, which I think is a pretty good price actually to get us there. It’s going to be, I think, about half an hour journey, give or take. Let’s have a look around. You’ve got sort of fabric chairs. Are they comfortable? They’re pretty hard, but that’s fine. I like the stainless steel doors and they’re actually pretty wide trains. You got your gymnastic rings there as well. Some advertisements that I don’t understand. And we’ve gone from a sort of brownie colorish actually I don’t know what you call that weird color to blue I think. Yeah, the blue is for people priority seat for people with disabilities or old elderly people. So, that’s good to know. Color coding makes it easier if you can’t read or I mean there’s symbols and stuff, but yeah, definitely makes it easier. Right, then let’s pop down and wait for this train to depart. There’s not much more to show you on these guys. It’s pretty uh simple layout on the inside, but it is fairly well laid out. The signage, at least it’s in English as well, and we know where we’re going over here. We’re starting all the way out here at the airport lines. So, we need to go all the way along to there. I’m sure if I have got the wrong ticket, I’ll get told off. I’ll get fined or I’ll have to pay the extra. But, I’m pretty sure I’ve got the correct ticket kind of. Right. So, it looks like we’re on the uh 13:35. So, we’ve got a little bit of time before this goes cuz it’s only 1318 currently. So, got a little bit of time. Uh and then the next one’s at 1405, then 1435. So, looks like that every half an hour. So that’s convenient. Bit of a mad dash up there cuz everyone’s having to use machines. A little bit different to what I’m used to just getting the tickets on your phone and just scanning something to get in. You maybe you can do it. I just didn’t know about it. Uh the JR pass was pretty painless though. Um I cuz I don’t think you can pick that up at a electronic counter. I think like electronic machine. I think you have to go to a counter but they have English speaking counters and Japanese ones. You just got the English ones. I couldn’t film in there because you’re not allowed to film in there at all. Had like a lot of signs saying you can’t. Um, but I would recommend if you’re going to buy a JR pass as well, guys, buy it on the official site because you can then reserve trains before you even get here instead of having to do it then. So, let’s say if I need to reserve a train tomorrow, which I will be taking to Fuku Fukuoka, that train could be fully booked or I’d have to get a worse seat. Whereas, because I booked this like 3 weeks ago, all the spaces were available for me to take and I’ve been able to do that for all of them. You can book up to a month in advance on the train. So definitely worth to do it ahead of time. And then the guy just printed them all off for me. So I’ve got a big stack of paper tickets. And I did get a paper GR pass. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a a plastic card. I’ve heard of these. So you can tap into certain trains. Couldn’t do that. So it means if when I’m in Tokyo or somewhere, I’m taking some of the smaller lines which are covered by the GR pass. I just have to find a guy and show him the pass and he let me through the the rail. Or maybe I have to scan. I’m not sure. Right guys, I’ll get back when we start moving. Well, guys, what confuses me is that uh I thought I was on a 1335 train and it’s 1327 and we’ve left. Uh the reason that confuses me so much is because we’re in Japan and punctuality is like the number one aim of the game here. So, let’s just hope I’m on the right train. We’ll soon find out. Well, I’m not sure. Perhaps we’ve got the wrong one, but it seems to be going the right way. So, I just don’t want to have bought the wrong ticket, that’s all. So you can just see the scale of the airport there, how large that is. And that whole island there is man-made. So now we’re basically on a massive bridge taking us to the mainland. from that man-made island, which is the airport, which is huge. And you really, you can only really appreciate the scale of it when you’re flying in and you see it from the sky. Well, guys, I seem to have uh found out what the situation is. So, there was the limited line which only stops at like three or four places before getting where we want to go to. I’m not on that one. I’m on just sort of the default line that stops at every stop. So instead of taking 30 35 minutes to get to where we need to go, it’s going to take about an hour if not a little more. But I’m not really in any rush. And it’s kind of nice to see all the little different stops. So yeah, it’s just Yeah, I guess we’ll just be experiencing like the local train. And at least this way I know I’ve probably got the right ticket because I have the cheapest one. And I assume the cheapest one will be for the one that hits every stop, not the express line. So that puts me at ease as well. But bear that in mind when you are getting a ticket. If you are in a rush, this might not be the train for you. Unless you need to get off one of those odd stops, but uh this train has pretty cool views. It banks quite a lot as well. I don’t know if you can see it on camera. When we’re going around a corner, it really leans. So far a pretty interesting looking city. There’s not a lot of tall buildings really. I mean this that’s somewhat tall I guess but compared to like any other city with this level of population I mean it’s quite a low set city. Well, folks, here we are. Didn’t take too long at all. Actually, Right then guys, we’ve made it to our stop. We’ve made it to uh Tangga Chaya. Boom. It must be noted although this looks very much like a metro train, it’s not a metro. It’s a rapid transit line. Oh, I was going to see if we can get to the front before close, but I don’t think we can. He’s going to zoom off. But I really like the design of the train. I really like that sort of like uh that metal like that sort of stainless steel exterior. It reminds me a little bit of like the um the New York subway going from the back there. See that? Awesome. Right, first ride down. That was really, really good. Right, guys. I hope you’ve enjoyed that rapid transit line, which is a privately owned uh line as well. It’s not a public train, so it’s a privately owned train. And now we’re going to get ourselves onto the Osaka Metro and get ourselves the rest of the way to my accommodation, which is a little bit uh unusual. So, if that’s what you’re interested in, guys, stick around and I’ll see you on the next one. Bye.

My very first train ride in Japan! 🚆 I take the Nankai Airport Line from Kansai International Airport (KIX) into Osaka, getting off at Tengachaya Station. It doesn’t all go perfectly (a little ticket confusion along the way!) but we make it in the end. Join me as I figure it out step by step — we’re learning Japan’s railways together! 🇯🇵
