This Shinjuku Scam Happens Every Night in Tokyo

All right. So, as we are walking, while I don’t see anybody around, there is one very real scam in Shinjuku and Tokyo that you need to be aware of. And it’s basically people that want you to follow them to a bar. So, they’ll come up to you and say like, “Hey, well, like a thousand yen, all you can do, all you can drink all night.” And then when you get there, it’s like six, you know, hundreds or hundreds of times more. Or sometimes they may spike your drink and steal your stuff. But you’ll notice that they’re mostly American-speaking African-Ameans.

It’s a real scam — and it happens every single night in Shinjuku.
You’re offered cheap drinks and “all-night” deals. But when you follow them? You’re charged hundreds… or worse.
Sometimes they spike your drink. Sometimes they just steal your stuff.
If you’re walking Tokyo at night, especially in Shinjuku, do not follow anyone to a bar. No matter how good the deal sounds.

  1. Used to live in Okubo so walked through Kabukicho a lot to get to Shinjuku station. The touts were English speaking Africans, with a random Slavic guy once.

  2. It's crazy how Nigerians be pulling this is in so many countries lol. You can easily tell the difference of Nigerians they have a specific speaking pattern that is different from black Americans. It's sad because so many people die all over the world from getting spiked, especially in Latin America.

  3. Another white men visiting cheaper countries they can afford and complaining blah blah blah everywhere they goes

  4. Even if you go alone into a bar, keep the eyes on your tab. Ive been scammed on overinflated tabs, and got my drink spiked in shinjuku, wallet stolen.

  5. Nigerians! They are everywhere in this area and super aggressive! It’s a shame how Japan isn’t able to get hold on them…

  6. Been here for the past couple of days, but I play I do speak English card because I am latino.
He was persistent but i kept walking anyone who says hello in broken English randomly say no walk away.
Same as in Mexico, anyone not speaking nativily in there country walk away.
I am Mexican so its a bit different for me as I am use to it

  7. I experienced this with a work colleague when we were at a conference. I think we were lucky to get out unscathed. It was so dodgy. And, yeah, I think they're Africans, not African-Americans. They often wear crazy shit like knitted jumpers with the American flag as a design to pretend they're American.

  8. Lol African American…. No lol 😅. Nigerians believe it or not are incredibly educated and well traveled. Unsavory tactics to solicit their bars.

  9. Hey bud, thanks for spreading the awareness of this scam. THis is a real big problem , especially in Kabukicho. BUT 1. They are 100% Africans, NOT African Americans. 2. They are English speaking with a heavy accent. Not "American" speaking.

  10. I’m a black man who’s been to Shinjuku twice and there are not black Americans scamming anybody. They are Nigerians and they target black Americans too. Stop spreading lies.
