In her new solo exhibition, artist Mikako Nakagami presents a meditative series of sumi (ink) paintings that merge traditional Japanese brush techniques with contemporary abstraction. Titled “Things Only They Can See,” the show explores the quiet, spiritual presence that animals seem to sense—but that remains invisible to us.
Focusing primarily on cats—creatures long regarded in Japanese culture as spiritual intermediaries—Nakagami captures subtle gestures, through their silent gestures and gaze, Nakagami invites viewers to reconnect with a delicate and sacred “something” beyond the visible. With restrained elegance and expressive fluidity, her paintings invite viewers into a tranquil space of intuition and reverence.
