The Moon Viewing Kagura Dance at Terukuni Shrine, Kagoshima, Japan.

It is said that an ancient tribe in Kagoshima worshipped the moon and this dance was created as an easy-to-understand kagura performance featuring a moon God and his messenger.

Today’s performance is by Yurinosuke Yoshifuku. Mr. Yoshifuku is a kagura master and friend of mine. Born in Kagoshima City, he is a representative of the Yoshifuku Shachu, a kagura group that is based in Asakusa, Tokyo, which performs kagura at shrines across Japan.

Mr. Yoshifuku’s life’s work involves creating and presenting dances based legends and myths from his hometown of Kagoshima. An example is Hayato Kagura, which commemorates the ancient Hayato tribe at Kagoshima Shrine in Kirishima City.
