Fukushima’s Cherry Blossom River Illuminated at Night

The cherry blossoms at Kannonji-gawa are one of the Tohoku region’s most famous sakura spots! The river walk features over a kilometre of cherry trees in a charming residential area within view of Mt. Bandai to the north-west. It’s a popular spot for picnics and strolls during spring, combining the vivid whites and pinks of the trees with the calm of the running water.

Every year during cherry blossom season, the river banks are illuminated in dozens of changing colours at night, and there are food stalls staffed by local vendors. The Inawashiro region sees some of the latest cherry blossoms to bloom in the entire prefecture thanks to its mountainous terrain, with full bloom typically forecast for late April.
