visiting japan’s LARGEST active volcano (and a peaceful ryokan stay) | mt aso kumamoto vlog

Volcanoes, horses, and endless green plains. This isn’t your typical Japan travel vlog. We’ve left the serenity of Kurr Kawson and now head into Japan’s largest active walking. So, come with us to Mount Aso, where adventure meets tranquility in the heart of Kyushu. [Music] While driving from Kurokawa onen to the volcano, there are many stunning viewpoints along the way, like this one that overlooks the Assur Caldera, a large crater formed from hundreds of thousands of years of eruptions. It’s now home to roughly 50,000 people and also where we’ll be staying tonight. I think it’s quite popular to cycle in Mount Ao because we’ve seen a couple of these stops. [Music] I’m on a little hidden trail which I think brings us down to the gorge. Ah, yes. Here’s the gorge. [Music] Don’t you feel [Music] you? [Music] We stopped the car cuz they’re right. I’m going to go around. What are these? They’re coming to you. Oh, they’re hissing at us. Okay, Sean. No, let’s back away. They’re scared. Turns out they’re a pair of Japanese honey badges. And this camera was just watching us the whole time. [Music] We’re at the first stop of our Mount Ao experience. And look at all these all these foods. So many na and curry at Mount Asso. Maybe I want a chicken biryani. We’re having um Indian potentially Pakistani food. There’s a really great view of Mount Ao. that strong. We’re at Kusa Seni Hagama right now and it’s like there’s a flat plains with horses poo everywhere. Just watch and potholes. Watch them. Look, horses. That’s full of people [Music] back there. That’s Mount A volcano right there. Oh, it is freezing up here as well. So cold. I have like three layers on and my thermals, the wind is just piercing through it all. [Music] [Music] We were just down there and we went up this steep hill. Now I’m out of breath and behind us is Mount Ael volcano right there with all the steam coming off. Such a fancy coffee place in this parking lot. So I got an apple chai latte which is a seasonal drink here. And Joel got their cappuccino with normal milk. And that is the line. Stretches way out the door. [Music] Needs sugar. She’s no honey cappuccino. That’s all I got to say. This is mine. Apple chai latte. They’ve used a really light roast, which is not really what I’m used to. I’m into a dark roast. This tastes like apples. More than chai latte. Yeah. Tastes like apples and milk and the tiniest bit of a cinnamony hint. That’s kind of it. Quite nice though. Really, really nice to have in this yummy. For me personally, it’s not the worst, but I like a dark roast. Cuz tacos is more like milk. I’m going to get a bit of [Music] We’ve made it to made it to Mount Ao. Just a so cold here. that there’s now ice. Does stink a little bit like rotten eggs, but not too bad at the moment cuz the wind is blowing the smoke away. But as we get closer, when the wind starts blowing the smoke here, the smell will get stronger. And Joe has her little mask on cuz she’s asatic. Yeah, not meant to be here, but apparently it is freezing up here though. I wish I brought gloves. We are almost at the first massive crater. Oh this is apparently one of the largest craters in the world. So the smoke from the crater just blew towards us and the smell it was so strong. I’m usually fine with pollutants in the air but yeah it is quite toxic. I have a mask and I can feel it in the back of my throat like dried up my throat. Speaking is a little bit hard. Even Joe with a mask on is coughing. But there’s a bunch of these like little I don’t know see little huts. You can see our assumption is that if it’s too much, you can just walk into the huts and it blocks off most of the gases. But that’s So this road is where we drove up from. If you can see just in that distance over there, there’s a little hut around there. That’s where you pay 1,000 yen to enter if you’re driving a car. And that that big area there, that’s a bus depot where it’s a little town right before this. And that bit place over there, that’s where we were. We had our lunch and had our coffee and saw those horses. Yeah. So, this is a volcanic desert. Kazan Kuen just a little bit further down from where the main crater is and put on a mask just in case the fumes do get here too cuz yeah my throat is getting quite dry quite horse and you can feel like the toxic gas. I think it just kind of loops sort of around the mountain as well. And Gerald has stayed in the car cuz she doesn’t want to risk the fumes getting to her again. Oh, okay. This is crater number four. I’ll be honest, I don’t know which one is the crater. It’s so barren. Just rocks. On this side. Yeah. Steps here disappear. Okay. And here we are at the top of whatever hill I just climbed. It’s a lot of rocks, a lot of stacked rocks, but not much other than that. Oh, it’s cold though. My hands are actually freezing. Okay, it’s time for me to make my track back down just what we bought in the car. Look at that. That valley times when when a real man must stay and fight instead of running no matter what. That’s the entrance. Main guest house. Our guest house. It’s a nice quaint little place to visit. That’s the bath house. Female male. And there’s like a private one you can rent inside. Tonight, we’re staying at a familyrun rohan deep within the Asso Caldera. It’s a 300-year-old house that used to be home to the samurai, but was converted into this cozy traditional inn for visitors to stay. The staff here are all very friendly, though there are some very peculiar decor choices. Have rooms upstairs. We get a nice view of the little courtyard where the car’s parked. Almost forgot to mention that there are two wild but now domesticated cats that roam the grounds. This is Kuro. What happened to your ears? You’re not desexed. So, did you get into a fight? Did you win? I’m trying to bake Kuro inside. Kuro yellow. Is it successful? [Music] Oh, sushimi. There’s no escaping it. It’s everywhere. Oh, it smells sweet. Gambe. This is homemade sweet sake. Dude, it’s really good. M. So most of the food here is homegrown and homemade including the rice and pickles and the pickles. Pretty much most of vegetables sushimi. It’s not bad. Not as bad as the other pieces I’ve had. I think it smells really good. Such like good fatty cuts. Some more grilled fish. I think it’s a meat. Like it’s like a crunchy meat pie. That’s cool. Do pies better than actually might be onion. Onion. It’s really good. Yeah, it looks like vegetable sa some beef in this ice cream. [Music] We finished eating dinner at Sakuba Aso. So now it’s time to open the pack. This is Shining Treasure EX. I don’t know if there’s a card trick to it, but Bour uh Natu I forgot that’s from Dolphin. Some dolphin. Ah, serge. Oh, maybe there is a card trick. Oh yeah, there is a car trick. One, two, three. question mark. All right. Flamig go triple something energy. Where’s energy? Electric generator. I forgot what this one’s called. Shiny no and Pal. There we go. What’s this? Good morning. Oh, you love As always, thank you guys for watching and we’ll see you guys in the next leg of our journey. [Music] But remember, don’t hesitate to call on me for anything. Like you said, a human being.

Did you know that one of the largest active volcanos in the world is in Japan? And you can visit it too!

We’re continuing our onsen roadtrip and now head towards Mt Aso. Along the way we’ll see some stunning views, tread along grassy plains and pet some grazing horses.

We’ll end our day at a family run ryokan that used to house samurai. Now it’s a cozy stay that revels in it’s history and is the home to two cats. It’s evident the owners love sharing their homes, as they maintain the property extremely well. Not only that, almost everything you eat here is home grown!
