Shuzenji Onsen is a serene and historic hot spring town often called the “Little Kyoto of Izu” for its elegant, traditional atmosphere. Located in Izu Peninsula of Shizuoka Prefecture, the town is centered around the picturesque Katsura River and the ancient Shuzenji Temple, founded 12 centuries ago by the revered monk Kobo Daishi, who is also credited with discovering the town’s primary hot spring, Tokko-no-yu, which remains a free public footbath in the riverbed today.
Visitors can wander across vermilion bridges, explore a beautiful bamboo forest path, and relax in classic ryokans that have welcomed guests for centuries. With its rich history, tranquil riverside setting, and deep cultural roots, Shuzenji Onsen offers a peaceful and refined escape from the modern world.
HOW TO GET TO SHUZENJI ONSEN FROM TOKYO
Getting to the beautiful Shuzenji Onsen from Tokyo is a scenic and straightforward train journey. The fastest way is to take the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Mishima Station. At Mishima, transfer to the charming Izuhakone Railway line for a picturesque ride directly to Shuzenji Station.
Alternatively, you can catch the Limited Express Odoriko train straight from Tokyo all the way to Shuzenji Station. Once you arrive at Shuzenji Station, keep in mind the main onsen town itself is not within walking distance, so you’ll just need to hop on a short bus or taxi ride (10 min) to reach your final destination by the river. Unlike other onsen towns, most accommodations at Shuzenji Onsen do not provide complimentary transfers.

ADDITIONAL TIPS:
1. It is highly recommended to book a room with breakfast when staying in Shuzenji Onsen. The area has few restaurants. Most open late and close early, making the hotel’s breakfast a convenient and reliable choice.
Regarding dinner (and breakfast in some hotels), it is essential to arrive at your hotel’s restaurant on time. If you are significantly late, the hotel may refuse to serve you, even if you have already paid for the meal.
2. As with many other destinations in Japan, most public onsens do not permit tattoos. If you wish to enjoy a hot spring experience, it’s best to book accommodations that offer private onsens for a more comfortable and relaxing soak.
3. When booking accommodation in Shuzenji Onsen, it’s important to note that some traditional Japanese rooms feature futon bedding laid directly on tatami mats. While this can be a unique and authentic experience, futons may not be suitable for elderly guests or those with mobility issues, as getting up from the floor can be challenging.
For greater comfort and convenience, it is recommended that travelers in these groups choose a room with Western-style beds. Many hotels and ryokans offer both options, so be sure to check room details before making a reservation.
