China continues to be the most dynamic market, with 69% of respondents indicating an intention to travel to Europe, despite a 14-point drop compared to last year, according to the latest survey by the European Travel Commission (ETC). Brazil follows with 46%.
The growth potential that long-haul markets, such as those in North America and Asia, bring to Greek tourism is reflected in the travel choices of residents from these countries over the year’s last four months.
Five out of 10 respondents told the latest survey by the European Travel Commission (ETC) they are planning a trip away from their home countries. And of those who will take long-haul trips, 38% will visit one or more European countries. Greece is a destination of choice for 14% of those visiting Europe, up from 12% in the previous ETC survey.
These are the findings of the rolling Long-Haul Travel Barometer survey, wherein France, Italy, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, Portugal and Switzerland are the countries that have higher percentages than Greece, followed by markets such as Austria and Turkey and 38 other European countries.
The survey was conducted in seven countries: the US, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan and South Korea. Particularly for the US market, the survey records an increased willingness to travel to Europe among those planning to travel to overseas destinations, with 29% of them stating that they are planning a trip to one or more European countries by the end of the year, a percentage that is 23% higher than in the corresponding period last year.
China remains the most dynamic market, with 69% of respondents indicating an intention to travel to Europe, despite a 14-point drop from last year. Brazil follows with 46%, while Australians have increased to 37%.
The importance of long-distance markets is increasing for Greece: The US market is now one of the most important for the country, with arrivals and receipts from there increasing dynamically. In July, the last month for which data is available, 209,700 Americans came to Greece, bringing the total to 903,900 since the start of the year. In July they spent 15.1% more money than in the same month last year, raising total receipts from the US in the seven months to 954 million euros, 25.3% more than in the same period last year.
