French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has resigned just weeks after taking office and hours after he named a new Cabinet.

Lecornu announced a Cabinet lineup on Sunday night, but the lineup was met with criticism from opposition parties, and even from ruling coalition partners.

On Monday morning, the prime minister announced his resignation, saying that “one must always put their country before their party.”

Lecornu had tried to secure cooperation from opposition parties for a draft budget for next year before he named Cabinet ministers. He had a tough time negotiating with the opposition.

The country’s presidential office says that President Emmanuel Macron has entrusted the outgoing prime minister with the responsibility of conducting final negotiations by Wednesday evening.

The ruling coalition led by Macron failed to secure a majority in the lower house of parliament in the election last summer. The ruling camp has since been struggling with implementing its agenda.

Five prime ministers have stepped down since January of last year amid the political turmoil.

The opposition is calling on Macron to dissolve parliament for a snap election or resign.
