교토 감성여행 – 가모강, 기온 거리 & 미친맛집 교토편 몽블랑 카페 (와구리 전문 사오리) | 교토 여행 브이로그
a Today, I’d like to begin our journey in Kyoto, Today we begin in Kyoto, along the Kamo River, a place where the city’s charm and calm truly meet I recorded the scenes while writing my book Historic restaurants around Shijo Bridge crossing The Mont Blanc café featured on Netflix And Gion Street in front of Yasaka Shrine. Shall we take a walk together? First, let’s check today’s course on the map.
The pink area shows the walking route. From Osaka Umeda, JR train takes 30–40 minutes to Kyoto Station. Transfer to the Kyoto Subway and ride up to Shijo Station. Or, take the Hankyu Railway. Hankyu takes about 45 minutes to Kyoto. Get off at the last stop, Kawaramachi Station. The Keihan Line goes straight to Gion-Shijo Station in the city center. From Yodoyabashi to Gion-Shijo it takes 50 minutes From Gion-Shijo Station you arrive directly at Shijo Bridge crossing. Here Shijo-dori, Kyoto’s main east–west street, crosses the Kamo River. Shijo Bridge is always crowded, but once you step down to the riverbank the mood changes. Kyoto’s charm in every season. Here everyday life and travel blend together. Cycling, strolling, or simply sitting on the banks watching the water. In summer, cafés and restaurants set up wooden riverside terraces called *Noryo-yuka*. The most beautiful time is when the lights reflect on the water. Entrances to Noryo-yuka restaurants are along Pontocho Alley. When lanterns are lit in the evening, it’s a joy just to pass by. At Shijo Bridge crossing, century-old restaurants line the street. On the first floor you can casually enjoy yoshoku like hamburger steak, while across the street is Matsuba, the birthplace of Nishin soba, and across the river stands the grand Chinese restaurant, Tokasaikan. But today, I’m heading a little further downstream. Just a 6–7 minute walk from Shijo Bridge. A place that preserves Kyoto’s spirit while creating something new. This is Waguri Saori, a chestnut dessert café, introduced on Netflix this summer. I visited last autumn. It feels more like fine dining than a simple café. Depending on the chestnut origin and quality, prices range from ¥2,500–¥3,080 (tea or coffee included). The must-try menu here is the “Saori Sha” Mont Blanc. Made with premium Tanba chestnuts near Kyoto, limited to 40 servings a day. “Saori” means fine silk weaving in Japanese. From a special machine, chestnut paste extrudes into 1mm threads. Piled high like a mountain, topped with chestnut slices and gold leaf. The finished “Saori Sha” looks like a work of art. Because of the premium chestnuts, it often sells out by late afternoon—reservations recommended. The base is a meringue baked low and slow until crisp yet soft. On top, fresh cream made from Hokkaido milk. A bite is delicate, with a subtle aroma that lingers. The second choice was a seasonal parfait. This one used chestnuts from Ebino, Miyazaki Prefecture. Less paste, but fruit inside makes it refreshing. Since the Saori Sha has a generous amount of chestnut paste, sharing a seasonal item alongside it is a good idea for two people. In summer, shaved ice. In autumn, chestnut-based seasonal desserts. Even if you don’t sit at the counter, you can step up when your dessert is made to take photos. After the sweet treat, the Takase River flows just outside. A small canal between traditional wooden houses—classic Kyoto scenery. Upstream it connects to Pontocho and gets busier,
but near the café it’s much quieter. In spring, cherry blossoms here are beautiful. This narrow canal runs parallel to the Kamo River. Now back to Shijo Bridge crossing. At the end of the 500m straight road, you’ll find Yasaka Shrine, founded in 656, the origin of the name “Gion.” The road from Shijo Bridge to Yasaka Shrine is always crowded, lined with traditional shops since long ago. Generations-old businesses fill Shijo-dori shopping street. Kyoto’s famous Yatsuhashi sweets. Matcha dessert shops, cafés and restaurants—browsing alone is enjoyable. At the far end stands Yasaka Shrine’s West Gate (Nishiro-mon). From its south side, paths lead toward Kiyomizu-dera Temple. From the steps of Nishiro-mon, the sunset spreads in the late afternoon. It’s also a lovely spot to see Gion’s evening lights. As the heat of the day fades, the Kamo River feels even more special. I hope you enjoyed this first walk in Kyoto.
