Shibuya Eatery has earned a place on Eater DC’s October 2025 “Best New Restaurants Around D.C.” list, standing out as the only Maryland restaurant to be recognized. The Japanese concept from chef Darren Lee Norris debuted its Chevy Chase location at 4461 Willard Avenue last month, bringing a fresh fast-casual model to Montgomery County.
Eater praised the restaurant’s “surprise comeback,” highlighting its focus on donburi (rice bowls), ramen, salads, curry katsu, and customizable options in a cozy 45-seat, counter-service setting.
The Chevy Chase opening marks a new chapter for Shibuya, which originally operated as a fine-dining spot in Adams Morgan before closing in April 2024. Now described as “Shibuya 2.0,” the revamped eatery trades formality for accessibility, offering chef-driven Japanese comfort foods at a lower price point. Menu items start around $19 and top out near $23, with scratch-made ramen, bento boxes, and curry katsu among the highlights.
Norris, known for his acclaimed izakaya Kushi that helped shape the DC dining scene over a decade ago, told Axios the change reflects both customer demand and industry realities. Rising rents, labor costs, and a growing appetite for fast but high-quality meals inspired him to create a model that blends culinary craftsmanship with quick-service efficiency. “Think Cava, but Japanese,” he explained.
