This was already rumoured last week but at least now there’s a tentative date to work with. The visit if confirmed will be directly after the ASEAN Summit, which will be held in Malaysia on 25-26 October. That is one that Trump is supposedly confirmed as attending but there’s no official word from the US camp just yet.
Trade negotiations will certainly be high up on the agenda between the US and Japan, so expect Trump’s visit to center around that for the most part. The occasion will also mark Trump’s first face-to-face meeting with the successor to Japanese prime minister, Shigeru Ishiba. As a reminder, Japan’s LDP ruling party will be appointing a new leader on 4 October this weekend. As things stand, Shinjiro Koizumi and Sanae Takaichi are the two favourites in what may end up being a runoff vote.
