Hakone Road Trip! – The Best One Day Trip from Tokyo

[Music] Hey guys, welcome back to Tokyo Chipo. I’m your host, Patricia, and today we are going on a road trip to Hakone. But I have a special guest. Hi, it’s Isa. Should I go now? Let’s go. [Music] We have made it to Hakon, which is actually a really popular day location from Tokyo. They’ve got museums, hot springs, and even a pirate ship. A lot of people will come here also to see the great views of Mount Fuji. I’m sure you’ve heard of Hakon before and most likely would have taken the train, maybe even the romance car, but today we wanted to show you a different way to get to Hakon. So, we rented a car. Currently, we’re at the Hakon Yumoto station where all the stores are here. And from here, you can get to the main touristic areas. Do you want to touch the water? I want to Oh, it’s so nice. It’s a little stinky, too, cuz that like Yeah. Yeah. I smell that. I smell that. I got skinoaki, which is a popular souvenir from Hakon. It’s basically supposed to be this sweet bun filled with a whole chestnut. I’m going to bite into this, but I just know it’s going to get messy from here. Brace yourselves. Oh, wow. So, right in the middle, we’ve got that boiled chestnut. It’s sweet, but not too sweet, which is like the perfect compliment as an Asian. So inside we’ve just got some red bean paste and then the main character is the chestnut. Chestnuts are usually made to be sweet here in Japan unlike in the maybe western world. So when you’re in Japan, maybe try some chestnut foods. So I got the pipari yakiringo which is basically apple pie but like japanified. So let’s try it out. I’m not too big of a fan of the red bean paste. So I wanted something a little more sweet and I love apple pie so I’m weak for that. If I can open it. Oh, you dropped that. I wasn’t buying you another one. I 5second roll. Ooh, you can see the flakes on top. I’m not quite sure what the flakes are, but I guess we’ll find out. M. It basically is apple pie, but the outside is so putty putty, like crunchy, crispy, and the inside is like an apple jam with apple chunks in it. It’s a nice quick apple pie. And if you wanted to, you could probably eat it in one bite. Try. Respect. You can you you can do it. I’m not lying. Okay, we’re done. Let’s go. We just had our snacks and we’re heading back to the car now. But if you want to get some souvenirs or some small side food, snacks, whatever, this place right by the station is the place to go. [Music] We’re currently at Hakon Shrine around 25 minute drive from Hakon Yumoto station. It’s a nice drive. You don’t have to wait for any trains or buses and it was a nice uphill scenic view being passenger princesses while Shaw was the chauffeur for us. So that was gorgeous. Yes. And since we’re up high now, it’s a little bit cooler. So it makes for a good summer spot. Get away from the heat a little bit. We are also in between Mount Hakuba and not Hakuba. We are in the Hakun kind of disappears from here a little bit. It does. We are also in between Mount Hak. Yeah. I’m telling you, Hakun is kind of like it’s like a forgettable name. We are also in between Mount Hakun. Oh my gosh. I know, right? I know. We are also in between Mount Hakon and Lake Ashi. And that’s where the famous Tori gates are. So, let’s go check it out. So, right behind me is the famous Tory Gate. As you can see, it’s what you think of when you think of Japan. And it is a good photo spot. However, it is really popular. So, there’s actually a line, and expect a line every time you come. So, if you do decide to come, you’re going to want to come early in the morning before all the crowd. I can actually see Isla trying to get some shots. I think she might be doing a business. What do you She’s just there taking aesthetic photos of other people, but it’s still a nice photo. So, I could sell them. She’s over here like I might be getting a better shot than her friend does. You know, I might be doing a better job. So, in Japanese, we have something called Oi, which is what I’m feeling right now. It means the air is delicious. It’s when you have that fresh air. So, this is something that you can’t get in central Tokyo. You have to come to places like this. Have you had tasted it before? Not like this. Not like this. No, I have. But like it’s nice cuz like in Tokyo it’s just everything is congested. You could go to like the trees and stuff, but like this is a different feeling. Like this is rejuvenating. It’s crazy to think that this place is so close to Tokyo. It’s a good place to touch grass, reconnect with nature, and considering how popular it is. It isn’t like packed with people. There are, you know, little pockets of places where there’s more people, but like here, very spacious. Last year, I actually did come by bus and train, but coming by car is a completely different experience. And I’m I’m guessing the prices aren’t even that much different. So, I think next time I come, I’m definitely going to think about renting a car. Wa! Look at that view. Is what we would say if you can actually see it. But unfortunately, today is a cloudy day and we are quite literally in the clouds. Yeah. Yeah. You could feel the breeze of the clouds. The cookie is very oy, but uh there’s no view. It’s supposed to be a panoramic site, so that’s why people come here because you get a panoramic view of Mount Fuji. Quite literally, right now, we see nothing. It’s just white. It’s actually only a 15-minute drive from Hakon Shrine. So, it’s really not a time sync. It’s worth it if it’s nice, but at least, you know, I got to be in a ping-pong ball. I think it’d be pretty impossible to get all the way up here without a car. Like I don’t think there’s any buses or obviously trains. So that’s when you need this guy. In a previous video about Hakon, they actually rode a pirate boat that goes along Lake Ashi. So we’re not going to be doing that today. Instead, we decided to come up here and catch a good view of Mount Fuji. However, we are quite literally in the clouds, so that’s not happening today. Honestly, it’s really nice to be up here. I feel like this has been, weirdly enough, even though I don’t see Mount Fuji, this has been the highlight because it feels very secluded. There’s nobody, nobody here. So feel kind of a altitude high. I I I don’t know what’s what’s going on with her. [Music] Save your time in trouble and make sure you have data on your travels through Japan with UBG. And most people usually take the ropeway to get up here, but for us it was only about a 20-minute drive from the previous spot. And now it’s time for a snack. This is the black egg. It’s supposed to extend your life. But we’ll see if it does anything. If not, we get our protein. So, let’s try it. Here you go. Thank you. Oh, it’s warm. I have had it before. Yeah, I’ve been using it as like a kaido cuz it’s kind of cold up here. Even though it’s like midsummer and it’s so warm in Tokyo, this place like I got goosebumps just being here because it was so cold. It is actually really nice. It’s really nice and it’s so warm and it’s my first time too. Wait, how do you usually break your egg? I just feel like Yes. And I think when you buy it, it comes in a set of four, so you can’t just buy it individually. But it’s only 500 yen, so steal. And it comes with salt or something, right? Yes. Yeah. Don’t forget it comes with salt because last time I for I didn’t know it came with salt so I just ate an egg or an egg. Okay, take a look at this. It doesn’t necessarily look like I don’t know. Looks like a normal egg. No, but it it has like a brew. Does a normal egg have that? I don’t know. Since it’s your first time, okay. M. It tastes like your normal egg. But it’s good. I love hardboiled eggs though. So, me too. I only eat hardboiled eggs. I got a souvenir. This is okakodan miso tarajuk. It’s basically pickled vegetables, but the reason why I got it is because I said it’s exclusive to this store. We’re here at the Hakon Open Air Museum. This is my first time. This is my third time. Oh, this is so cool. Okay, which way do you want to go? You’ve never been here, so I’ll give you the opportunity to choose. I go this way. Okay. Oh, we’re running. I get too competitive. I love it. I was like, “Oh, I’m running.” I’m sorry. You can see my face. I’m like, “Maybe.” [Music] So, this is one of the two big museums that they have, the Picasso Pavilion. This is Shaw’s favorite. He made a big deal out of it. Said it like five times. It’s really nice inside. So if it is raining or if it starts raining you can run in have a nice little walk around see the art and there’s also a au which is basically foot bath but it’s like a foot on sunen so if you’re walking around hakon your feet are tired go there and relax just your feet but still relax but we’re okay today because we had a car barely walked not good for the step count but good for the heart how does that make sense cuz you’re not like tired and you’re like relaxed. So, it’s like constant like calmness, but you should like increase your heart rate, right? That’s like the whole point. This place is already cool to begin with, but I imagine especially if you come like earlier in the day at like 10:00 a.m. or so, I feel like it’d be prettier. Yeah. Yeah. The sun be and everything would look really nice. If you go up upstairs as well, there’s like an observation deck of the whole park and some mountains. So, it’s really pretty. My only complaint is really hot and stuffy in here. Yeah, it’s very hot and stuffy. So, let’s leave. A lot of the off the-beaten path spots that we’ve kind of visited in this video, it’s really hard to go if you’re sitting on a bus with everyone and taking public transportation. So, road tripping really is the way to go. Especially if you come during the spring or autumn where there’s the cherry blossom and halami going on or co autumn leaves. It’s a really nice time to come. Not too hot, not too cold. If you’re road tripping, you have to visit the Mitinoakis. There’s so many everywhere and you can only get there by car. They have food, drinks, snacks, and some also even have onsets. A good first impression. It’s good. My favorite part was probably the statue that had like it was facing down towards the ground like that and the butt was up in the air. That was my favorite one. Would you come back? Yes, I would come back. Honestly, it surpassed my expectations. My favorite is the hill reincarnation. It just has so much detail to it. It’s like this like sculpture with a bunch of people, but also skulls. They’re like merged together and they like look like they’re burning alive and it’s like hell, you know? It’s like but so vivid and detailed and it’s just it’s so cool cuz like you never really see that kind of sculpture. You know what I mean? It’s true. It’s unique. Yeah. And all the other sculptures are nice but they don’t I didn’t like get that punch, you know? So, this place was actually mentioned in a previous video as well, but I think it is actually worth the hype. It’s my first time here. Great first impressions. I would definitely recommend it. [Applause] Ah, so this place is called Beer Bar by Gora Brewery. And Gora Brewery actually has several different locations in this area, but this one is known for their craft beers and handmade tacos. So all their craft beer is actually made in Huckliss. It’s very local. That’s one of the reasons how we persuaded Shaw to come here. We were like, we want tacos, but he won’t allow just tacos. So, local craft beer and I got the GB carnitas. Looks amazing. I got the such a hazy day beer with hazy IPA. I don’t know what that means, but it tastes really good. It has the highest alcoholic percentage, but it didn’t taste that strong and it was like kind of citrusy, like kind of refreshing actually. Looks like apple juice as well. I got the hika. This one is 5.5%. The reason why I got this is because they said I wanted something citrusy, refreshing, and they recommended these two and I wanted something a little different. So, for tacos, we have the I think this is the carnitas and shrimp avocado. And we got loaded fries with chicken pork or carnitas jalapeno. Yeah, meat and cheese. Meat and cheese. And I got chicken. You got the teriyaki chicken. Go for it. M. Good tacos. Sauce is a bit spicy. I’m not a big spicy person. I’m the only one in my family that can’t handle spice. Really? My dad loves spice. He goes like hundred for everything. My mom eats spice. My sister does, too. I’m the only one. That’s why you got the weakest jeans. Yeah, I got the weakest jeans. I can’t handle spice for some reason. Even the tiniest bit. So, this is like high. But it’s good. It’s good. Oh, yeah. Cheers. It’s my turn. I’m going to start with the carnitas. Carnitas. It’s not spicy at all. But I will say it goes really well with the lime. There’s also like little pickled radish I think which is really unique. So we’ve got the carnitas, cilantro, radish. Relatively simple but with lots of textures. So this shrimp taco comes with avocado sauce, shrimp, tomatoes, and cilantro. I’m a huge fan of cilantro. So Okay. M I’m really glad I got both because they’re very different. I like the contrast. This one’s very like has a kick, spicy, meaty. This one is more like gentle, creamy, mild. It’s a nice food for after a long day of traveling, looking around, eating the black egg. I’m enjoying myself. Can I just say something? I love Hakon. After my first time, I love it here. So, like I said, they have different stores. Uh, this one’s known for their tacos, but they’ve got one that’s known for their grill, uh, pizza. So, I’m really interested to see what the other places are famous for. On your next trip. On my next trip. Pizza, here I come. Cheers. Cheers. Cheers. They’ve got the classic nacho cheese on top. Kind of junky, but the American me loves it. It’s like a proper loaded fries, you know? You could taste the nacho cheese, the thighs, the meat. It’s all very nicely tied together. So, we’re going to finish our food and drive back to Tokyo. What was your favorite place? Probably either between the Black Egg Place, what’s that place called? What’s it called? Okuani. Okuani or the open air museum. What about you? For me, because I’ve been here before, the only place I haven’t been was the Ashoko Shrine near the lake. Ah, okay. And that was really nice. I think that was my favorite today. Even though she didn’t actually take a picture or line up or anything. Hey, hey, hey. I tried my best. I got some good shots of other people, but some good shots. Well, let us know if you guys like this road trip style video. We might do another one. Please like and subscribe and comment down below anything. We’ll catch you on the next one. Bye bye, guys.
