Osaka –

With the finale of the Osaka Expo less than three weeks away, one pavilion called the Tech World has been drawing crowds, with immersive digital exhibits emphasizing the role of semiconductors behind innovations.

Sitting just outside the expo’s iconic wooden ring, which houses country pavilions inside, Taiwan’s futuristic pavilion is a soft power offensive by its government.

Because Taiwan is not a member of the Bureau International des Expositions, the international body overseeing world expos, it has participated as a private-sector exhibitor under the name of Tamayama Digital Tech, a Tokyo-based company set up in 2021 by the semi-official Taiwan External Trade Development Council. Tamayama uses the same kanji characters as the ones for Yushan, the tallest mountain in Taiwan.
