NEW YORK – Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya urged Iran on Tuesday to fully cooperate again with the International Atomic Energy Agency and resume talks with the United States, when he met with his counterpart Abbas Araghchi.
Japan’s Foreign Ministry, which announced that the request was made in New York, said Iwaya stressed the importance of maintaining “multi-layered” dialogue between Tokyo and Tehran amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
On the Iranian nuclear issue, Iwaya expressed Japan’s strong hope for a diplomatic solution and called on Tehran to take swift action to avoid the reimposition of U.N. sanctions at the end of the month, according to the ministry.
It said Araghchi explained Iran’s position on the nuclear issue during the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.
Iwaya met earlier with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi and conveyed Japan’s support for the nuclear watchdog’s efforts to persuade Iran to resume cooperation with the agency, according to the ministry.
It said that the two also confirmed Japan’s continued cooperation with the IAEA on the North Korean nuclear issue.
