The Tennis Gazette writers have predicted the winner of the ATP Tour’s Japan Open.
Matthew Johns: This tournament is a difficult one to call, as a lot of these players have just travelled all the way from San Francisco to Tokyo after the Laver Cup. Carlos Alcaraz feels like the obvious choice, but I am actually going to go with former Japan Open champion Taylor Fritz, who will likely be fuelled with confidence after his impressive performances at the Laver Cup.
Lee Clarke: I will opt for Fritz. If the American isn’t confident after thrashing Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev at the Laver Cup, then he might never be confident ever again!
George Patten: Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz are the two clear favorites in Tokyo, especially after the latter’s efforts at the Laver Cup in San Francisco. However, with a tough draw in round one against Gabriel Diallo, don’t be surprised to see Fritz suffer an early exit in the Japanese capital. You wouldn’t want to bet against Alcaraz, but watch out for the dangerous Czech star Tomas Machac, who will have learned a lot sitting courtside at the Laver Cup recently.
Peter Lynch: Carlos Alcaraz is clearly the player to watch, particularly after another very impressive Laver Cup display. But I think a handful of others are capable of causing an upset, with Tomas Machac getting my vote to emerge victorious.
