Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Madeleine King will visit Japan this week to strengthen bilateral cooperation on resources and energy.

Minister King will travel to the Osaka World Expo to promote Australian trade and industry and will explore opportunities for Australian and Japanese firms to invest in Australia’s critical minerals industry to support global efforts to reduce emissions.

“Energy security during the transition to net zero is a high priority for both of our nations,” Minister King said.

“And Australia and Japan both share a commitment to growing and diversifying critical minerals supply chains at a time of increased global volatility.”

Japan considers carbon capture and storage (CCS) as essential to achieving its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 and Japanese companies have been active investors in CCS projects in Australia.

Minister King said cross-border CCS is an important pathway to support industrial decarbonisation.

“With the emergence of the Asia Pacific region as a globally important carbon storge player we have the opportunity to progress new and existing transnational storage projects involving Australian and Japanese partners,” Minister King said.
