From Zen Garden to Active Volcano | Our Wild Cruise Stop in Kagoshima!
Good morning from Kagoshima, Japan. Today we’re on the Silver Sea Silver Muse, aren’t we? We are indeed. And we’re doing a tour called the landscapes of Kagashima. Welcome to the globe, guys. [Music] [Music] escaping. So, our first stop on this excursion was a famous and rather beautiful garden called Sangan. [Music] So, we’re on the Silver Sea included excursion and um we’ve been on a tour bus for about 40 minutes and we’ve got a really sweet tour guide. Bless her. Uh that’s why we’ve got one of these cuz we can listen into what she’s got to say. Uh but our first stop is the Sangen Gardens. And the first part of this garden is about 370 years old, but they expanded it about 100 years ago. But it’s really nice and peaceful until somebody starts up a chainsaw. But it’s really, really nice. It is. I love Japan. [Music] [Music] 12 13 weeks is [Music] [Music] Lots of cat cheeks and dreams to choose and cat. Oh, bless. So, we never expected to see a cat shrine, did we? No, we didn’t. You know, and we have two cats. Um, so no, this is quite nice to see. Yeah. The little kind of statues are quite cute. They are quite cute. Yeah. Yeah. And there’s an interesting story behind it. Yeah. Yeah. the emperor emperor or somebody back in the 17th century sailed to was he sailing to conquer this place was he or something or I’m not sure not sure he brought seven cats with him anyway but he used their eyes to tell the time of day so like you know like we fully open it was 6:00 a.m. when it’s kind of like a slit it was 12:00 p.m. and so on. There’s a bit of a picture down there that illustrates it, which is quite interesting. Yeah. Our cats always tell the time, don’t they? Yeah. Yeah. Well, yeah. Purely by the fact that they won’t feed him. Yeah. You know, [Music] And we should say that if you’re doing this on your own, there’s actually a JR rail station just behind. Our next stop in Kagashima took us to Sakurajima, and that involved taking a ferry. Now, Sakurajima used to be an island, believe it or not, until a major eruption of the volcano there created a causeway. Even so, the fastest way there is by ferry. And the volcano, well, it’s one of the most active in the whole country. Now, Ivan fell asleep on the coach, so it was left to me to educate him about the island. Our next stop on the landscapes of Kagashima Tour is Well, it’s that I don’t know what the name is. It’s called Sakurajima. Sukuruima. There you go. It’s one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. Sometimes having many minor eruptions on a daily basis. Daily basis. Yeah. Pretty cool. So, and yeah, it’s going to be quite interesting. I thought when we first come this morning, I thought you could see like smoke coming out the top, but I think it’s just the way the clouds were. Yeah. It does disperse quite a lot of ash. Yeah. On a regular basis. We’ve been told we to wear sunglasses to help protect our eyes. So, yeah. Quite interesting. So, we’re just on the ferry. takes about 15 minutes to go over there. And did you know it’s not actually an island, but it used to be an island, did it? Yeah. And then in 1914, just over 100 years ago, there was a major eruption and it spewed out so much lava that it actually kind of solidified a bit of a um connection to the mainland. Wow. Yeah. Fascinating. But we’re taking the ferry. [Music] Go back. [Music] Nice. [Music] You got 40. You got 40 minutes. [Music] [Music] So, we have Sakurajima in the background. And do you know what? You can actually see you can still see it smoldering as well. If you if you look up close, I’m not sure that’ll come out in the video. You can you can smell the sulfur. Um, not as strong as it is when I remember when we was in Hawaii. That was really strong, but it’s definitely a lot of sulfur in the air. Um, and all these formations, this is just these are all made from lava that’s just, you know, solidified over time, you know, and the views up here are amazing. And there’s some eagles flying around, which is quite cool. And I think they’re all I don’t know if you can see all that down there, but they’re all fishing boats, I think. Um, I think they’re I think they’re fishing for tuna and stuff. Um, well, you know, all lined up in perfect symmetry. Very Japanese. And this, as we said earlier, is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. And bearing in mind that you are pretty much, it’s not an island anymore. It’s more of a peninsula. However, just bearing in mind that it does have so many eruptions that you’ve got shelters like this that you can go and hide in if it was to erupt all of a sudden just now. It’s also why the fairies or one of the reason why the fairies run 24 hours a day so that if there is an an eruption people can get off pretty quickly. You are an absolute fountain of knowledge. I just listened to the uh to the tour guide. What can I say? [Music] So that’s been a taster of our So that’s been a taster of our landscapes of Kagashima, which has been an included Silver Sea excursion. It absolutely has. And it’s been a good one. You know, we’ve been blessed with the weather. It’s been a lovely day, but Kagashima is a is a beautiful island, isn’t it? It is. It It reminds us of why we love Japan as well. Beautiful landscapes, really nice people, and Yeah. I can’t wait to come back to Japan for a longer trip. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We should definitely come back to Japan for a longer trip. Absolutely. But no, for anyone that’s thinking about visiting Japan, this is somewhere that you should absolutely come on. Definitely a definite recommendation, isn’t it? It’s right in the south of the country, so it’s probably somewhere that maybe gets overlooked in favor of some of the other places like Osaka or Hiroshima, of course, Tokyo. But yeah, it’s a great place to come. It’s a place. Yeah, I would totally agree. Um, having only spent three or four hours here, the second we got off the the ship and onto the coach and just interacting with the Japanese people, they they’re just lovely. They are absolutely lovely. They really are. Speaking of Japanese people, they are so punctual. So, we’ve got to pretty much get off and get back to our coach. Otherwise, we’re going to get told off.
