Japan’s inbound luxury-travel market recorded robust growth in 2023, outpacing the global luxury-travel sector in both spending and visitor numbers, according to a new survey by the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO).
The survey defines luxury travel as individual spending of at least one million yen per trip. Japan’s inbound luxury market reached approximately one trillion yen in 2023, a 50.6% jump from 2019. By comparison, the global luxury-travel market expanded 17.6% over the same period to 21 trillion yen.
The number of luxury travellers visiting Japan rose 83.2% to 590,000, far exceeding the global growth rate of 32.5%.
Despite overall international arrivals to Japan in 2023 being down 21.4% from 2019, the luxury segment grew significantly, lifting its share of total inbound spending from 14% to 19.1%.
China, the US and Taiwan emerged as Japan’s top luxury-travel markets by both spending and visitor numbers, accounting for more than half of the segment.
JNTO said the results reaffirm Japan’s appeal as a high-end destination and will guide new promotional efforts. Plans include deeper engagement with overseas luxury-focused travel agencies and familiarisation trips to regional destinations, in line with the government’s Tourism Nation Promotion Basic Plan.
“Luxury travellers are not only spending more, they are also helping us achieve a more sustainable and regionally inclusive tourism economy,” JNTO noted.
