Two-time European champion Jessica Schilder won her first global gold in a thrilling final round of the women’s shot put at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25.
New Zealand’s Olympic silver medallist Maddison-Lee Wesche had led from the first round after equalling her PB of 20.06m. That remained the best mark of the competition until the final round when Schilder unleashed a 20.29m effort, her best ever throw in a major championships.
Defending champion Chase Jackson was next to step into the circle and she too produced her best of the night, a 20.21m throw. It was enough to overtake Wesche, who held on for bronze, but not enough to displace Schilder.
