Welcome back to my Niigata trip. Have you watched the previous two Niigata vlogs? ^_^ In this video I’m focusing on the shopping spots I visited and the food I ate in Niigata! Without further ado, let’s get started~ “Amu to Tsumugu” is a café located in the Numatare Terrace Shopping Street. The whole shop features simple Nordic-style furnishings with warm wooden tones. Besides excellent coffee, the desserts here are great too. In addition to tasting coffee, they also have fresh coffee beans imported from Denmark. I chose their signature blend. The beans are roasted by Nakamura Coffee Roasters in Nagaoka. Brewed by hand pour-over. For dessert I got the most popular crème caramel. It’s the classic Japanese firm-style pudding! The texture is rich and silky. The caramel is sweet with a pleasant bitterness. The café’s atmosphere is very cozy. Perfect for quietly enjoying coffee and dessert. I ended up buying coffee beans as a souvenir! Highly recommend this café! If you visit Numatare Terrace Shopping Street, don’t miss it~ This general store is also inside the Numatare Terrace Shopping Street. It sells handmade goods from both within and outside Niigata Prefecture. There are lots of cat-themed items too. If you’re a cat person, don’t miss this place~ There are many more unique items inside. I’ll leave some surprises for you to discover~ I recommend picking up souvenirs for yourself or friends. Pier Bandai is a large market combining a fish market, produce, and restaurants. Let’s check out the fish market first. The fish market is very neat and clean. They sell many types of fresh seafood from Niigata’s waters. Niigata is a top-producing area for red snow crab. Naturally, there are plenty of fresh, affordable red snow crabs here! I couldn’t resist taking one back to the hotel. Packed with rich crab roe. The legs are a bit thin but the meat is sweet and fresh. Worth trying when you’re in Niigata~ The market also has mentaiko. Various shellfish and shrimp. Hairy crabs from Sado Island, Niigata. Prices are very reasonable. There’s also sashimi and sushi available. The market has indoor dining with heating and air conditioning. You can enjoy your purchases on the spot~ Next is the snacks, meat, and produce section. The meat market sells Niigata beef. Beautifully marbled beef! If your lodging has a kitchen, buy some to cook! The vegetables are very fresh too~~ All freshly harvested locally. Besides fresh foods, there are lots of dried goods. It’s a great place to buy Niigata specialty gifts! Niigata rice is famously delicious—must buy!! Highly recommend tea from Murakami—very fragrant and smooth. I opted for tea bags to enjoy at home. Sasadango is a famous Niigata souvenir. Green rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. Filled with mildly sweet red bean paste. Soft and chewy with a light fragrance~ There are also many restaurants at Pier Bandai. Next door, the Niigata Fisheries Hall has two cafeterias. They offer great-value fresh sashimi bowls and set meals. A sashimi set is only 1,700 yen!!! I didn’t get to try it this time—if you have, tell me your thoughts in the comments ^3^ Lastly, I want to introduce this donut shop inside the market. They have a wide variety of donuts. They also sell curry bread, sliced bread, and sandwiches. My top pick is their donuts. Don’t miss the limited-time items~~ The donut dough is very fluffy~ Even with glaze, it’s not overly sweet—great flavor! If you’re a coffee lover, don’t miss this place~ They offer many varieties of coffee beans. The staff are friendly, explain each one, and let you sample to pick your favorite. The beans were recommended by the staff as the best match. The coffee is topped with black pepper and the rim is salted. The milk foam is extremely smooth. The sweet-and-salty taste is very memorable. Knowing I was traveling, the owner even recommended the Niigata travel books in the shop. So kind!! Nagaoka Kojimaya is a long-established soba restaurant in Niigata Prefecture. They have several branches in Niigata City. Their soba uses seaweed as a binding agent. It’s served in wooden “hegi” trays. The noodles arrive neatly arranged in bundles on the wooden tray. The tempura features seasonal vegetables, plus large shrimp and sea bream. The soba has a nice springy bite. The buckwheat aroma is rich. The set’s tempura shrimp are big. The batter is crisp and not too thick. The portion size is just right for me. If you eat a lot, you can add more soba for 286 yen~ There’s a food street inside the Cocola mall next to the station. I chose a place specializing in one of Niigata’s five famous ramens: backfat ramen. Their specialty is soy sauce broth topped with pork backfat. The noodles are on the thicker side. They’re flat and soak up the broth well. The chashu is thinly sliced but a bit dry. The egg wasn’t soft-boiled, which was a bit disappointing. In the end I couldn’t finish it. Because backfat ramen is just too greasy for me >-< Nigirigome is a popular onigiri shop near Niigata Station. You can check the menu and choose flavors while waiting in line. After entering, buy a meal ticket before being seated. Each onigiri is made to order. They use Niigata rice and nori from the Ariake Sea. As expected of Niigata rice!! The rice is soft and delicious. Each onigiri is stuffed with filling. Every bite is full of the savory flavor of mentaiko. Have an onigiri and a bowl of miso soup in the morning, and you’ve got a perfect Japanese breakfast~ dAb COFFEE STORE is a café with lots of character. The air is filled with the aroma of coffee and baking. A record player plays soft music. I love the vibe. The latte has thick, rich foam. They use dark-roast beans, which I love. All baked goods are made in-house. The scone is loaded with nuts. Crisp outside, soft inside. The nuts add crunch and texture with each bite. A surprisingly delightful scone! I really like dab coffee’s coffee. Sake lovers must come here~ Pay 500 yen at reception, and you’ll receive a tasting glass and five coins. They offer sake from breweries across Niigata Prefecture. There are also seasonal and rare sakes. If you’re overwhelmed, check the daily recommendations~ Each dispenser shows ABV, acidity, sweetness, dryness, etc. Choose based on your preferences. They provide salts from around Japan for pairing. Take a pinch of salt in your hand when tasting. Lick the salt before sipping to enhance the flavors. After tasting, I bought these two bottles to take home. Highly recommend the one on the right, “IT’S THE KEY!” Super smooth! Girls will love it~ I hesitated about trying this place. I was worried the pork cutlet rice bowl would be too greasy. Luckily, I did try it in the end!! The staff gave me a private booth—perfect for introverts ^v^ Lots of privacy~~ This pork cutlet rice bowl is a Niigata specialty. You can choose curry or light soy sauce versions. This is my pick!! The portion is huge. Two big cutlets with rich curry sauce. The curry is mildly spicy with Indian flavors. It’s very thick. The cutlets are thin, but very crispy and aromatic. Paired with fragrant, bouncy Niigata rice, it keeps you going bite after bite. Be sure to try this Niigata specialty~ I stumbled upon this restaurant two weeks before the trip. It has a 4.38 on Tabelog and made the 2025 Top 100 list, and earned two Michelin stars in 2020. I was super lucky to snag a last-minute reservation! The chef is professional yet friendly and witty. The assistant presents a description with each course. Most ingredients are locally sourced from Niigata. The omakase is 25,000 yen for 21 courses (as of 2025). Here’s a quick look at the courses ^_^ Think it’s over already~? There’s more!! This is my first time having such a clean, sweet black tea! That’s the delicious journey I had at Kyodai Sushi! The shari (sushi rice) has just the right acidity and flavor. The ingredients are fresh, and the ambiance is comfortable. Overall, it’s my number one high-end sushi experience in Japan so far. If I return to Niigata, I’ll definitely go back! You must come and try it~ Lastly, on the Shinkansen leaving Niigata, I had this ice cream made with Koshihikari rice. The smooth ice cream contains actual rice grains! It has a lovely rice aroma~ The rice grains make the texture really fun. That’s my Niigata travel log. I really like Niigata. Hope the weather’s better next time so I can visit more places! Thanks for watching till the end. Please like, share, and subscribe to my channel. See you in the next video!!
