Are There Really Digital Nomads in Japan? — Day 16 in Tokyo
All right, tonight I’m going to be able to use this Japanese clothing. [Music] Good morning, you nomads. This is day 16 of living in Tokyo for 30 days as a digital nomad. And today, I want to answer the question a lot of people ask, are there digital nomads in Japan? But first, of course, I’m getting my coffee. And I got this drink from Woodbury Coffee with such a good one that I’m going to rank it the number six out of 15 coffee places so far. So over the last year, Japan is becoming more international and recently there’s a few communities popping up for digital nomads and that’s what I want to share to you. I’m going to go to a co-working spot right now that is mainly made for startups. So the place is called Shabuya Bridge and it’s a co-working of two floors but it’s also where a community called Shibuya startup supports happening. Shibuya startup support is a a community where we start uh support startups. Uh one is the startup visa holders. we’re going to support the step-by-step application process. Also, I think what makes it unique is that she actually goes to the bank with you and also goes to the incorporation process with you. Um the other is startups group of startups that Shibuya City recognizes and certifies as their official. They pick about eight or 10 um startups every year. So yeah, Shibuya start to supports one of the first NMA communities that I found here in Tokyo and they’re bringing some nomads as me for the whole month of September. So the digital nomad program is something that we just started in February of this year. Um they’re able to use the space as well as the startups uh companies that I mentioned earlier. So this is our digital nomad program for the Shibuya startup. As you can see it’s a lot of things this September. um we do realize the importance of digital nomads and how they’re really a big community and international community um bringing inbound people into Japan and we realize how important that is and we would like to kind of mix things up I guess with our own startup community. So that’s why we started the digital nomad program. And because I’m accepted to the digital lama program, I can use this co-working for the whole month. So I can come here and there when I’m close to Shibuya. And it’s it’s nice. It has an area like like a focus mode. It has a few tables around. There’s food, there’s coffee, and one of the first normal communities that I found is called Kifuoka. As you can see here, I went there 3 years ago and I made a video about Fukuoka and also included Kif Fukuoka because really it’s one of the best ways to get introduction to the Japanese NMA community. And I also went there last year and this year I’m going to go again. So if you’re around here, if you want to PC Japan, definitely check this one in October. Happens every year. And talking about Japanese friends, I actually going to meet a lot of them tonight here because we’re having like a start of pitchup. So that’s why I brought my happy this um like Japanese I don’t know like like a Japanese traditional clothes because I’m going to wear it tonight. It says Kifuka in the behind. Isn’t that cool? The reason that I’m wearing it tonight is because Rion Aina, the founders of Kifukuoka, couldn’t come to Tokyo. So, I’m going to be the ambassador picoka. But first, I’m going to use the co-working space for a little bit. Going to do some work and a night. Let me show you what’s happening. Welcome back to Japan. [Applause] Okay, here. This is cool. No, I like the Hey, pizza. Pizza. Yes. How are you doing? He’s He’s the one staying in Dash Living as well. Oh, really? Yeah. Nice. I like that. Can I see? Oh, yeah. Yeah. This event is a um opportunity to meet CBI’s community. But not only that, we started by asking people who wanted to pitch their ideas to the community. And we got an interesting round of products from AI, retail design, and even consultant agencies. And then it was my time to promote Fukoka as a digital nomad destination. Hey, hello. Hello. That’s why I brought this. Hi, I’m Sergio Salah. I’m a YouTuber. I make videos for digital nomads. And three years ago, I went to to Fukoka. There’s an event called Kif Fukuoka. And that’s what we’re going to talk about because this October, we have a the third time the conference. Well, it’s not me. This is real. This is the founder. There’s a 10-day conference. There’s also a whole month, one month called living there. There’s some information in Japanese. I don’t know what he’s saying, but but you guys know for sure. And this time we have Ken Honda. He’s the most influential happy money master in Japan. So, he’s there. And it’s it’s a cool place to meet other nomads, Japanese people too, locals, the whole combination. It’s one of the best spots if you if you want to connect with the startles, with nomads, with the community of Kif Fukuoka. It’s one of the best places. That’s it. Thank you. We also heard about the community digital nomas Tokyo and why the city is attracting a lot of foreigners. Next, we heard about the community Hiroshima and a noma phase that they’re about to launch there. We also heard about Tadima Shimora, which is running a cool living project for NAS this upcoming November. Later, we heard about Hakuba, a community inspired by Vansconomas Fest to bring people to a remote town in Japan. And also we heard about Lena’s a hotel in Kanasawa with a co-working space included that is also trying to track digital nomads. Hello Elena. Nice to see you again. Nice to see you again. Okay. So I didn’t know organizers of the digital nomads Tokyo. Tokyo. Yes. It’s important to know cuz I’m making videos about Tokyo. I realized oh we don’t have any digital nomad spots in Tokyo and also meet up. Hello Aloh. So that’s why I and also Esther Ku created like regular meetups since like last year. Yeah. Last year and then February. So since then we are doing twice a month meet up. I’m really happy to hear that because we we need that. We need that for more people to come. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yes, please. So the next meet up is Friday. Yeah. 26th. 26. I’ll be there. I’m going to make a video. Oh yeah. Okay. Thank you so much. Okay. All right. That was a lot of fun. It was actually nice to pitch Kifu Koka to other people and I just want to let you know that the digital noma committee in Japan is very active. I’m going to put the links of all of these places down below so you can check and see which one you want to go. But before we go, let me just reply some of your comments from the last video. Brad were saying that he found my channel. How much do you end up paying for the apartment and how’s the digital number for people without friends? So the second question I already answered with this video and the first one I also answer in the first day. Cameron says, “Drip bags are awesome. My preferred way of making coffee.” Yes, I have my drip bags here and I’ve been thinking maybe I should make a business about this, but that will be in the future. Anyway, that’s it for today and see you tomorrow with more digital nom content. Ciao. [Music]
Tonight I joined a special meetup where digital nomads and startups pitched their ideas — and I even got to represent Colive Fukuoka, a coliving project in Japan.
Japan isn’t usually the first country that comes to mind for digital nomads, but the scene is growing. From Tokyo to Fukuoka, more spaces, events, and communities are starting to welcome remote workers.
