KJ Moody On Styling Naomi Osaka: Cohesion, Confidence, And Setting Trends

When it comes to merging sports and style, few athletes push the boundaries like Naomi Osaka. The four-time Grand Slam champion has long used fashion as a tool for self-expression, both on and off the court. Whether she’s stepping out in neon-accented sportswear or experimenting with high-fashion silhouettes, Osaka has cultivated a reputation for individuality and boldness that extends far beyond tennis.

For her most recent appearances, Osaka partnered with celebrity stylist KJ Moody, whose client roster spans entertainment, music, and sports. Together, they curated a series of looks that feel modern, unexpected, and cohesive all while staying true to Osaka’s fearless approach to fashion. From a sleek Ferragamo set to a voluminous Palomo Spain bubble dress, each outfit highlights the balance between playfulness and sophistication that defines her style.

Moody, who is known for his ability to create statement-making moments with subtle details, was intentional about crafting looks that spoke with one voice. A unifying thread, stockings paired with every ensemble, gave the styling a sense of continuity while allowing each piece to stand out on its own. In this conversation, Moody breaks down the inspiration behind the looks, the unique considerations of dressing athletes for off-court appearances, and how Naomi Osaka continues to set trends by embracing her individuality.

Naomi Osaka is known for her individuality and bold style. When styling her for these appearances, what story were you hoping to tell?

KJ Moody: Cohesion is always the goal. I want to make sure to have one voice and one clear message rather than three different conversations. For us, using the Wolford stockings with each look became home base.

How did you ensure her personal style was reflected in these off-court looks?

Moody: What I love about Naomi’s style is that she’s not afraid of color, unconventional silhouettes, and she loves to play with texture. So, I came in with that mindset because I always want to make sure they are comfortable and feel like themselves in every moment.

Naomi has had iconic on-court fashion moments. How did you approach creating looks that complemented her sportswear legacy?

Moody: She’s bold and vibrant on the court, which is what I love, and there’s always a subtle pop. Think the iconic neon bow at the 2024 US Open or the two-tiered bubble skirt at the 2025 US Open. So, knowing that, I stayed on theme with the White Bubble Palomo Spain Dress. It was chic, subtle, but also had a unique silhouette. The Ferragamo look was sexy and subtle, but the flare was in the strappy thong heels with that pop of orange.

Naomi’s style often influences broader fashion trends. How do you see these appearance looks contributing to that conversation?

Moody: Naomi has the ability to create her own sexy. I saw so many comments about girls now wanting to wear stockings and open-toe heels together. She’s not scared of individuality, and she’s definitely not following anyone else. She’s setting trends. That’s why she’s a champion!

Can you share a bit about your collaboration process with Naomi in bringing these looks to life?

Moody: I love for a client to browse the racks and let me know what’s speaking to them. But what I wasn’t expecting from her was when she said, “Tell me what you like.” It was a very OMG moment that really set the mood right there. She tried everything on without negative feedback or no’s, even when she knew it wasn’t going to work for her. It really felt like we were playing dress up, having fun, and enjoying the moment.

Looking forward, what role do you think athletes like Naomi play in bridging sports and high fashion?

Moody: I think it’s a big role. They may have more definition than the average model, but what does that even mean? They don’t have real bodies? Models, athletes, and entertainers are all real people with different silhouettes. I think it’s comforting when people can see themselves in someone. Seeing a 5’10 woman in heels, and showing off her beautiful legs, is needed in a world where everyone over 5’10 is wearing flats. One fearless person can change the narrative with a beautiful, masculine, feminine, out-of-the-box rule for themselves and everyone notices!
