Chey Tae-won, chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, visited the “2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo” to strengthen solidarity with the Japanese business community and strengthen the will to cooperate.

The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced on the 15th that it has dispatched a “2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo Observation Group” consisting of Chairman Choi and others to Osaka, Japan. The visit was made in response to a request proposed by the Japanese business community at the “13th Korea-Japan Summit of Presidents” held in Osaka in November last year.

The atmosphere of cooperation between the two countries’ economic circles is expected to continue until the ‘Gyeongju APEC CEO Summit’ in October and the ’14th Korea-Japan Summit of Presidents’ in Jeju in December. Based on the common tasks discussed with Japan at APEC, the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry plans to continue improved exchanges and cooperation between companies from the two countries on Jeju Island.

The volume of trade between Korea and Japan increased 352 times from 200 million dollars in 1965 to 77.2 billion dollars last year. However, as the proportion of mutual trade is steadily decreasing, there are steadily raising claims that new cooperation momentum is needed.

“South Korea and Japan are the closest neighbors who share values and profits, and face common challenges such as geopolitical crises, low growth, low birth rate, and aging,” Chairman Choi said. “The two countries should develop into an economic community that creates strategic and structural synergy beyond simple economic cooperation.”

The leaders of the two countries also agreed to expand cooperation in future industries and strengthen cooperation inside and outside the region at the Korea-Japan summit, increasing their consensus on economic solidarity between Korea and Japan.

Yoon Chul-min, head of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said, “The upcoming APEC CEO Summit and the Korea-Japan Summit are valuable opportunities to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries,” adding, “We will use Korea and Japan as an opportunity to imprint on businessmen and the international community that they are partners who jointly propose and lead economic agendas in the region beyond bilateral cooperation.”
