Kyoto BEYOND the Usual

Welcome to your beginner fishing lesson. Jen Korea in number one Japan. It’s a cool hobby. It helps me stay out of trouble. But if you got a problem with you got a problem with it. Like I’m not here to argue with anybody. It’s thousands of vermilion gates. You guys can lose. Good morning everyone. We were supposed to wake up at 9:00 to go out to fish. That alarm got snoozed a total of three times. It is currently 10:30 and the fish are still going to be out there. Did you know the world record largemouth bass was caught in Japan in this lake that’s right down the street from us? 22 lbs and 4 oz. I think uh Crystal is going to fact check that when she’s editing this video. But yeah, we’re going to try to rent some fishing poles and go and fish today. We’ll see how it goes. It’s definitely going to be a blazer today. Very hot. Let me check the weather right now. 90°. This is Joshua, your local meteorologist, signing out. And it starts now. They’re going to start using all their fishing acronyms that I’m not going to understand, but I’m going to try my best. Catching PBS today. PBS only. I’m really glad that Daniel told me what the acronym stood for. I wasn’t going to ask them. I was going to figure out. I was like, is it bass? Is it probass? You’re not going to tell them personal beds. They’re going to try to catch PBS or they’re going to get is going to try to catch professional battles or they’re going to catch the world record today right here. I’m saying it. I’m marking out loud. Red Bull purple. Not in the US, right? Ooh. That boy fa to get his wings. Yeah. Like I said, I’m catching PB bass today. I might throw on a spinner bait or a finesse worm. Here we go. Uhoh. Uhoh. Heard it here first, folks. Aftertaste is definitely good. Grape. Yeah, after taste is really good. Okay. Okay. Okay. That just tastes good. Good. Seven out of 10. Seven out of 10. Seven out of 10. I gave it a eight out of 10. Eight out of 10. What’s the best color? Vanilla berry. No, the ice vanilla. Ice vanilla. What color is that? I would like a baby blue winter edition. Baby blue. That’s your favorite, too? Yeah, that one’s good. What does this one rank amongst all of them? Probably the fourth one. Fourth. Mine would be the third. Worth the hype? Yes. Yeah, definitely. You heard it here first, folks. We’re currently waiting. Well, we’re currently figuring out directions to our new place. The instructions said to remain on the train, so we did, but I went on a different route. So, just figuring that out. But, Bass, here I come. It’s the first time that we’re at a train station like this. [Music] This is the temple. And before you come in through the doors, you do want to bow twice. And then when you leave, I did see a child just bow once. [Music] We’re trying to find a fishing store. Let us know if you have any tips for fishing. I do enjoy saltwater fishing because I think that all you have to do is cast the line into the ocean and you wait and be patient. In fresh water, you have to to make the bait act like it’s in real nature, so you have to jerk it a lot of times and that I have not mastered yet. So, we’re going to work on that. But, I think survivor skills are very, very important and we’re going to do that today. They like doing it for sport. I like doing it to actually catch something and cook it and eat it. But hopefully we’ll learn a lot of tips and tricks from them. We are eating McDonald’s again. Try these nuggets. [Music] Your fries look kind of busted. The sauce is small. You get three sauces. 16 pieces. Let [Music] me show you the burger I got. [Music] Is that what you think teriyak tastes like, too? I love the hint of ginger. Cool. has mayo in it. This bowl 6 and a half out of 10. Yeah. Out of 10. It’s not bad. Japan doesn’t have as good a McDonald’s as I hope they would. I know, right? But but that’s the point, right? So you can eat No, that’s not the point. They supposed to have a good McDonald’s. No, I’d rather have good authentic Japanese food. I get that. But I also rather have a good McDonald’s. We got to rank all our McDonald’s. It was one McDonald’s. It was really good. Then we got We kept getting the chicken sandwich. What was that? Vietnam. Mhm. What did we have? The cheese had the mozzarella. I can’t remember which. Is it Is that the one I like more? You did like more. You did like that one more. Was that not in Viet Vietnam? No, the one in Vietnam had the the real chicken. Yeah, the one in Korea. Korea number one. America number two, Vietnam 3, Bangkok 4, Japan 5, Japan 5. We made it into the shop. We got the goods. All of this was $50. So, we have we got bait. We have the fishing rods. We’re gonna get PBS today. Watch me. She could not get that word out of her mouth. I know. Can y’all teach me some more fishing lingo? Cuz I I feel so left out. I did go fishing as a child, though. That was fun. It teaches you patience. Yeah, let’s not get skunked today. But that already knew. That’s when you don’t get anything. All right, let’s catch some fishes. [Music] We made it to the dock. Fishing holds a really special place in my heart. Everybody’s gearing up. Watch out. Wait, so this is freshwater fishing, right? Yeah. See, saltwater fishing, you would cast it out and then just wait for it to bite. You still do need to have the skill to know when it bites and how to reel it in. But the freshwater fishing unlocks a new level of patience. What? His bait came off. Oh no, you just cast it. Oh, no. But freshwater fishing has taught me a whole entire new level of patience. And you have to stand the whole time. I like saltwater fishing cuz you can just sit down and wait. But we’re going to be standing the whole time and then moving to new locations constantly. But being able to catch your own fish for surviv as a survival skill, so important. something I’m going to continue teaching the next generation and something that I need to learn how to be better at. Oh, but if you’ve ever gone clamming or snail, like collecting snails, that’s also another good source of protein. All righty. In the spirit of saying that, I do know what I’m talking about because I have gone fishing before, but coming for me, it’s going to be this is beginner. Welcome to your beginner fishing lesson. So, this is called a fishing rod. And this is the fishing reel. [Music] This is where the line goes. And uh Okay. So, you have your bait. But this one already has the bait connected. Oh, which is cool. But all you’re going to have to do is see they’re already expert level, so they already got their stuff and fishing away. But if you’re a beginner fisher person like me, this is perfect for you. I like saltwater fishing, too, because then you get to have a have a real like a live shrimp. You pick up the live shrimp and put it through the hook. All right. Okay. So, what I usually do is I’ll grab onto the hand um to the string. This string is so thin, huh? What’s this been before? Okay. And then you take you move this lever out so that you can cast the line. Okay. Okay. Whatever. But we’re going to Oh, watch me. I hope I’m not scoring on everything. Okay. [Music] All right. Now, you’re going to snap that lever back that we had just released. Um, yep. And then after that, this is becomes intermediate expert level because I don’t know how to jerk it correctly to make the fish think that this is a real fish that is chasing. So Joshua would be better at this. That’s it. I gota cast the line. Oh, that was bad. Ooh. [Music] This water is so clear. Like for the first time, I’m able to actually see my bait. Okay. So, every couple seconds. Oh, every couple of times that you’re going to be really in the line, you want to jerk it in such motion. All right. We’re going to try that today. I’m going to become intermediate level today. Okay. Oh, and then no worries about this jacket. This is a uh like air technology jacket. It’s very thin, but it’s UV protection. So, and I got this in Vietnam cuz you know how on the motorbikes, they’re on the motorbikes all the time. So, with the wind flow, they’re going to like people stay cool, but you’ll get you’ll stay protected from the sun. I have my shoulders out today. Can’t do that. hat. Don’t want to get sunburnt. Same thing. You want to get your uh UV protection hat. And I’m going to stop yapping now so that they can have a peaceful moment to fish. And Jennifer is on the other dock. We’re going to move over to the other other dock. Let me get out deeper into the lake. See if I can catch something. Um, but you know, now that I like while I’m thinking about it and also while I’m this section of the month, I get a lot more reflective. Um, so while I’m thinking about it, might as well record. Um, yeah, fishing has a special place in my heart cuz this is one of the few memories that I had left with my dad. So, it’s beautiful, but also like to my culture. And I guess like I mentioned being connected to my people, too, because September 2nd is Vietnamese Independence Day from France. And it’s like this whole that whole population could have been wiped out. But there’s perseverance, there’s strength, and something to be really proud of. I don’t think people think about like, oh, we’re going to go fishing in a different country, but like while you’re on vacation, you still want to have something that you love. And why not say that you fished in Japan? That’s something so cool. That that’s something so cool to do. I Yeah, that’s not this is wasn’t on my personal bucket list to do, but to be with a group of friends who really enjoy fishing. Who really enjoy fishing um and with everybody. [Laughter] That was such a terrible cast. He saw that and laughed at me. But um Joshua and I are constantly always saying like when when you’re traveling do something that Did you notice that one honey? Did you like that one? That that was a good cast. Um, you Joshua and I are always mentioning like when you’re traveling definitely find something that you enjoy doing so that you can have a balance between exploring the new country, appreciating the culture. So like we’ve been sightseeing and learning about the history of things like reading all the plaques at the shrines. is like you want to learn but then also take a break and for my friends fishing is a really great reset and so they’re very excited to go on this excursion today and then if you go with a group of friends too each Jen Jen oh Jen it was following my bait a big one now it was a cute one Oh, I saw it, but it got too close to the dock, so it it didn’t stop following. Oh my god, it’s here. Okay, we’re going to try again. We’re going to try again. We’re going to do better. We’re going to catch one. I’m over here like calling your name like as you’re going to like what? Take my rod and fish it in for me. [Laughter] It good sign. Oh, I was tell you gota make sure you hook it. Oh my god. Okay. So, it’s like just when you feel the tug, you hook it. Yeah. Okay. Once you feel the tug, you’re gonna pull back on your rod and that’s how you hook them in the mouth. Please try to hook them in the mouth so it’s a clean, easy break for you to take off. Take off the hook. They scarred me when I went with them and they hooked a turtle. Okay. It started bleeding and I was like, “Oh, no.” But that’s happened when that’s what happens when you fish in a pond. Yay. is following the bait. Uh what was I talking about? Okay, so this isn’t something that was going to be on my bucket list, but my friends like doing it and and you’re you’re also here to build memories and also I’m strengthening my fishing skills then, right? It’s not something that I wouldn’t that I have no experience in or don’t know what the heck I’m doing. Oh, can I even sit on this? Okay. Yeah. And then like when it’s my turn, we’re going to go to Osaka and I really want to go to the expo. the the expo that happens every 5 years. It’s in Osaka this year. A shout out to a friend that I met at Z Hostel. He was the one that put me on to to go to this expo, but that’s where I want to take them. So that I believe it’s more like technology based things like they’ll show you um innovations. They’ll show you new innovations. Each friend gets to pick an excursion so everybody can enjoy. [Music] That’s my goal, y’all. I have to be the first one to catch a fish. All right, come on. Come on. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Come here. Come here. Come here. Come here. Come here. Come here. Come here, bro. I see you. Oh my god, y’all. I’m watching. Come on, dude. Just bite it, bro. There’s three of them. Please just bite it. No. Actually, it’s like That’s like This is like bait fish. It’s like very They’re very small. It’s a very small one. But if I can catch it as bait, that wouldn’t be a bad idea. But I’m trying to swim with you. I’m trying to be one with the Trying to be one with the fishes right now. Oh, I’m so focused with my my foot’s burning, friends. Come on over. Come on over. Bite it then. Bite it then. Hey, I figured it out, y’all. I understand why you have to jerk the pole now. Cuz what I was noticing with this dead bait, this bait is not alive. um if you don’t jerk it, it goes down. And so every single time I’ve jerked it after like the one, two, and jerk, one, two, and jerk, um like you reel it in twice and jerk, that’s what keeps the fish afloat. And I get really excited because seeing like I’m I think I get a fish bite, but it’s not a fish bite. It’s the It’s getting caught in the seaweed. I get it now. I was just um I just started vlogging about how like I understand why you have to jerk it and I was like I’m like observing how my fish is moving and how the other fishes are reacting to it. All right, so no one has caught anything yet. Feel like being in the fishing community, you learn how to you learn about fish behavior. And so everybody knew that we were supposed to be out here early in the morning. That’s when the carp is going to be out. But we haven’t got anything yet. Maybe we’re at the wrong part of the lake. Um, but it’s still fun. It’s not going to be a skunk. Okay. I do believe somebody’s going to catch something. The goal was to look for bass. So, bass specifically. So, we were trying to get bass. You got the you got to come out early in the morning, not midday like we are, but it’s still going to be fun to try to catch something just to get better at the sport. Now Joshua’s all the way across yonder. Jen’s still at her spot. And then Daniel’s all the way underneath the bridge. But there’s also a fisherman under the bridge. We are now in search for Joshua because I got caught on a rope and had to let my bait go. Now I got to get a new bait and new weight too because we Jennifer told me that my bait was too light which is why I couldn’t even cast it out far enough. But we’re seeing the fishes reveal themselves now. It’s so hard to get them to bite. I’m really hoping we get some. Oh my. They’re jumping out of the water. But when I was in here, that’s where I got caught. Oh no, on the other side. But I was getting caught in on the line. Oh, they’re right there. They keep jumping up out of the water. It’s possible. Okay, it’s going to happen. We’re going to we’re going to get one. I just saw this sign and at first it gave me a heart attack because I was like, is fishing illegal? We’re going to get in trouble. But actually, once you translate it, it says that we should eat the bluegill black bass and the black bass smallmouth bass and the large mm mouth bass cuz it’s saying Lake B was long history has nurtured a wide variet a wide variety of fish and other creatures and shrimp, but these three fishes have been very invasive. They are non-native fishes and are delicious. Literally, they’re like they are non native fishes and are delicious. So, if you catch one, take it home and eat it. So, we are doing a service here. Okay. Now, for a really long time, like I had I couldn’t I don’t know. I felt wrong to like just like sports fish. Um, and I don’t know, like I still haven’t grappled like what to think of it cuz I’m so used to just catching it and eating if that for me cuz I’m like, “Oh, they’re, you know, they just got hooked and now they’re hurting.” But a lot of my fisher friends, they say that just as long as you know how to hook them correctly, um, really like no blood is drawn and it’s only on their lip and then it does heal and it goes, you know, like it it’s fine. So, but so I hope I that I’ll hook it. I mean, and I have fished before, so I do hook it in the mouth and then we let it go if we don’t want to eat it. So, it’s been fine. But I think overall, like the survival skull that I’m talking about and being able to know where your food is coming from, we do we have lost touch with that. A lot of people would just go to the grocery store and buy your beef, buy your chicken, but have you yourself caught one and had to like skin it and do all these things? Um, so it is really important to appreciate the food and you know and like now that I’m learning the skill of being able to fish like worst case scenario, we’ll be able to fend for ourselves later on. worst case scenario, like apocalypse type stuff. But yeah, just being one knowing that this could be food. I mean, we’re not gonna cook it now that it’s now that they’re saying, “Please cook it.” Um, but we don’t have a place to cook it otherwise. That’d be pretty dope. And I do trust this water over the waters of like Galveastston. There’s a lot of dragon flies here. Maybe you can see it. A lot of dragon flies. I cannot find Josh. How am I supposed to fish if I don’t have any bait? He’s like on the other side of this lake. It’s so beautiful though. Very peaceful. Oh, he’s all the way over there. He’s all the way over there. Wow. Okay, we’re just going to go over there. Maybe we’ll have some luck. Maybe we’ll catch something. He’s pretty good. He’s the one that got me into freshwater fishing. I’m making my way to my fiance. I’m still getting used to saying that. And this is our first fishing trip as fiances. It’s been like a 15-minute walk just to get to this man. All right. He’s luring in this fish. She says he sees it. They’re battling right now. And that quick reel. Quick reel. Quick qu. I can’t see. Quick reel. Quick cast. Oh, is that a tongue twister? M. It’s you and the fish, babe. Man versus fish. Will this Will this be your first one? Oh my god. Come on. Come on. Come on. Focus. The focus. Oh You don’t want this. I have no idea what fish you’re looking at, babe. All righty. We are trying to find a fish in the water. I have no idea what he’s talking about. Somewhere in there. He’s such a grumpy pants. I’m trying to mess with him and he’s like and I ain’t caught no fish. It’s hot and I ain’t caught a fish yet. So don’t touch me. [Music] This is my new worm. She walked all the way. You what? What was this? A half mile away? Yes. Quite away in the sun, in the heat. But I did bring him water. So, you know what? Maybe you needed the water. You didn’t bring your water. You just came with water. You just happen to have water, you Yeah. So, you’re welcome. No, but I made sure I was like, “Okay, there’s water.” Cuz I know I’ve been drinking some. You need to drink some, too. Or I can just abort and go to 7-Eleven. Get us all Gatorade. Hopefully it’s 7-Eleven. Get us all Gatorade so we stay hydrated, not grumpy and tired. Cuz what they did yesterday was nap all day long. I lost track of where it was. All day long. I hope I catch something with this one. Now it’s going to be Now it’s going to look exactly like the water. How are they going to tell it’s a worm? Is yours even heavy enough? This is his. Yeah, maybe you should take my worm and catch some fishes. And to be clear, we did do our research that we can fish here before we got here. But that sign did scare me when I saw that. We did our research that we can go fishing. There’s like a canoe possibility, but I haven’t seen anybody canoe. And we can also rent bikes. So, we’ll be doing that next if we’re not too burnt out from being in the sun for 3 hours fishing. I think this is a better conversation to have with Joshua because he’s one of these fisher people that I say like have helped me kind of be okay with sports fishing. Um, not that I catch a fish anyways, but like for people that actually do catch fishes, he doesn’t hurt them. Like he knows how to hook them Look, look. I’m I’m not going to try to convince I don’t try to convince anybody to do sports fishing. I do it. I see may some people may say it’s wrong like hunting, but when I catch a fish, 99% of the time, I hook it in like the lip. The same way someone can get like a lip piercing like they don’t die. Like my like 99% of my fish like I I believe go on to live like nice healthy lives. Every now and then you’ll hook one in the eye. And even when you do that, they can still like swim away. They can still hunt and stuff. The only problem is when you gut hook them, sometimes some people don’t know how to get the hook out. When you hook them in a gut, that’s like me hooking you like in that area right before your esophagus. That’s what a gut gut hook is. But all you got to do is get pliers, which I carry on me when I’m when I’m back at home. And you got to spin the hook a certain way. And you can even get that out. So, I believe most of my fish go on to live. It’s a cool hobby. It helps me stay out of trouble. It’s a cool pastime. I’m not hurting anybody. So, I don’t I mean, but if you got a problem with it, you got a problem with it. Like, I’m I’m not here to argue with anybody. So, I I don’t think it’s like completely unethical, but I can see how that might trigger some people, I guess. Yeah. And so, that’s what I mean. think I feel like the people that I’ve been hanging out with to help me become a better fisher woman is because they have spent a lot of time studying fish behavior, learning how to actually fish, not just like throwing a rod out there and kind of like, okay, call it a day. Um, and I feel like like me call, you know, throwing it out there and calling it a day, like I’m not catching anything anyways cuz I’m not like actually studying how to do it. But they actually will catch stuff and when they do catch stuff, I’ve seen the technique that they use to to remove things. So if you wanna this the guy I learned fishing during co the guy well my dad taught me a long time ago but I forgot most of the techniques. I honestly don’t think he knew what he was doing all too well there. But the guy I learned from his name was one rod one reel with the number one one rod one reel fishing. He fishes for bass. That’s usually all I fish for. I don’t really do saltwater stuff but you can learn some techniques on there. It’s pretty fun. After you catch a fish, a couple fish, learn how to do it. learn how to handle the fish. It’s pretty fun if you got some lakes near you. Uh good hobby to pick up to me. You might not like it, but I enjoy it. I think it’s cool, too. I haven’t gotten the thrill of of catching um of like feeling it. Yeah. She hasn’t caught a fish yet. Yeah. In fresh water. Okay. I’ve caught some in salt water, but like I said, all you got to do is throw the thing out and you wait for it to you wait for you see the line like pull and that’s when you know there’s a fish on it. But I have never gotten the experience of feeling it live, like hook on live, and me having to pull the rod to hook the fish. I haven’t gotten that yet in fresh water, so I don’t know what that tug feels like, but they all they all tell me, you feel it hook, and I see them pull the their rod. So, I think that’s why I haven’t gotten hooked to it into it yet. But that’s why right now I’m still learning the technique on how to fold a fish with my my fake bait. Yeah, everybody got different hobbies, man. I mean, I enjoy fishing, you might not. You may enjoy stuff I don’t like, but you got to I feel like my generation or our generation especially is so obsessed with like their public image. They’re not willing to like try new stuff. They’re always trying to like not trying to be cool, but I don’t know what it is. Like go out there and try new stuff, man. You may like something that you didn’t think you would like. Yeah. I think What do you think? Like fishing is an expensive hobby, too. No, I don’t think so. I think you can buy a pretty cheap reel and a and pretty all you need is a rod and reel and hooks and baits and weights. You can get all of that. You can get a decent setup for like $30. You can go to the pine shop and get something like that. That’s true. $30 I think is I’ve never bought one from the buying shop. I usually buy my stuff new. It could be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. I think Jon and Daniel have expensive stuff cuz they do like saltwater fishing and it’s like a whole deal to get from Houston to Galveastston to fish or to report and fish and then you have to especially you’re going to cook it like take it home then you want to have an ice chest and all that. It’s like buying a car. I mean you could make it expensive if you wanted to. Like I have a setup that’s like $80, but I could also get one for $20. It’s just I mean obviously a $80 rod and reel isn’t going to be as good as a or it’s going to be better than like a $20 rod and reel, but there’s also I’m sure two $300 rod and reels. So it just I mean it’s like it could be expensive if you want it to be. But yeah, I was saying is if you can definitely look into trying out new things, um, new hobbies, but yeah, fishing isn’t one of the ones that I thought I was going to be doing. I mean, you you don’t really in all honesty, I don’t think you really like it that much, but I think if you were to know what you were doing, like if you were to go and watch YouTube videos, it’s it it kind of turns into like I guess mini hunting or like mini psychology. Oh, that’s what I was saying earlier. Where are the fish going to be? What are they biting today? What time of day is it? How hot is it? Exactly. So, that that’s what I like about it. Like, speaking of learning new stuff, I just learned that for this one, this type of bait with the shiny stuff, I don’t have to spinning reel, I don’t have to keep a spinner bait. I don’t have to keep tugging on the bait because with the shiny thingy, they already they’re already attracted to it. But like his with the worm, it’s all boring and green and this water is green. You do have to figure out you have to lure it and so you have to tug on it. I think my fish, same thing cuz when I was watching it didn’t look like a real fish until I was pulling it, I mean tugging at it to make it look like I go swimming. But yeah, so now this one I get to relax. So, I don’t have to tug a tug and pull anymore. I get to just reel it in. We all got skunked. No PBS today. I am so excited. We are finally at the Fushimi Inari Tisha Shrine, which is the place that has the thousand to gates. And I believe a lot of people wish for prosperity here too. So a lot of businesses will buy a buy a shrine. This is not what I thought it would look like. But there are a lot of shrines in here. And then you get to the gates. Maybe you can pray here and get your fortune for fortune by shaking the box. That makes sense cuz in Buddhism we do the same thing. All right, since this is 10% left, I need to make sure I get these gates. [Music] Double arming. Double arming. on me. We got to get the gate. So, this shrine, the Fushimi Anari shrine, is one of the most important of the several thousands of shrines because it is dedicated to Inari, which is the Shinto, the god of rice. [Music] praying for a prosperity for all of us. Now we’re walking through the smaller one and they’re very close-knit. I didn’t realize that. That’s pretty [Music] close. Is it actually a thousand gates? That’s what it says. I don’t know anymore. There’s actually thousands. It’s famous because of its thousands of Vermillion Tori gates. I have over here. On the back of these gates are the names of companies or individuals that have donated 400,000 yen for a smaller gate and increases to about 1 million yen for a large gate. These foxes are thought to be Anari’s messengers. That’s why there are so many foxes at the entrances of these shrines. [Music] From this point, it’s 40 minutes to the summit, but no one wants to go with me. But I can show you the lake. Our dinner tonight and it’s only 6:30. [Music] We are eating at Wago Fukusai. Shops are closed now, but I’ve been waiting to go to Teramachi. It looks so nice. We’re going to So, I didn’t realize there was two pocket hotels. I picked the wrong one. So now we got on the So we got on the wrong bus and I was like how odd because we’ve always been getting only on the number five. I’ve been making sure I picked the right one. Yesterday when we were walking on that 20 30 minute walk to get back to our place. I was like if I picked the wrong one these people may jump me. The other one was closer. It was like 5 minutes closer. I had no idea that there was two pockets. I’d be forgetting the same American. You could just do and it’s been and then I didn’t realize there was two pockets because like on my recents the pocket hotel recent search disappeared because I’d just been searching up so many places to go. So then I was like, “Okay, I’m just going to put the pocket.” And then the freaking that one came up first cuz that one’s closer. Makes sense. But once I double checked, at least we double checked. And now it’s actually faster to just walk home and we get to explore the place. Well, things are closing. Every every time we’re in this area, it’s closing. I know cuz we have an all day excursion. Yeah, we haven’t been able to explore the shopping. Well, that’s good, though. I mean, we don’t need to be shopping too much. We don’t need to spend any money any more money. I am terrified of what our budget looks like after this. So, yeah, I don’t want you to tell me at all. I just want to live my life in peace. We’ve been so good at budget traveling. Well, okay. We have not been good great. We haven’t been great, but that is why y’all need to like, comment, and subscribe, please. Um, no. But we do tell y’all whenever there’s a nice deal that we think is very that makes sense, is actually tasty. And I hope we’re breaking the barriers of like people being uncomfortable with hostiles and doing stuff like outside of your comfort zone. That was one of my I think people’s biggest fears like oh you’re going to sleep in a dorm with like other people to me it’s like I never went to college and exper Well I have a I have a degree I have a nursing degree but I never went to like a un went and slept at a campus like I was able to go to nursing school from from home. So this to me this is like going to college for the first time. Yeah. And everyone’s even been really respectful. Well, we only have one bad story, but everywhere else we’ve had great experiences. And um and there are curtains. And there’s curtains. The only bad story we had is this is in Vietnam in Himin City or Saigon, Vietnam. And we’re right next to Boying Street, which is the party street. Okay. So, I know everybody talks about Kawong being like, “Oh my god, Thail like that’s wild.” No, Vietnam is wild. Okay. And and we just happened to be on that street cuz that was like the only kind of district one was on the area that I had just I had been to recently so I was more familiar with it. So we’re like, “Okay, let’s just pick it.” So we’re like, “Okay, let’s just pick that.” We ended up staying at a hostel that was We ended up staying at the hostel that was right next to it. So, of course, big mistake. If you’re not a party person, do not stay next to like road or movie the big party streets cuz you’re going to be Oh, because you you’re going to be in a hostel. Not to say that we’re not party people, but we’re just 27. We’re older now and we we’re not we’re not out on like a on a holiday as people call it our vacation. So when we go out we’re kind of just exploring the city or the country. We’re not trying to just party in one specific area. And what I’ve noticed is around a lot of those party streets is people that are like mostly European people not like Colorado just people are going there to only party for like a week straight and then go back home. So, if you’re out there trying to explore the country, do not book a hostel, you know, one of those party roads. Get something that’s kind of out the way and you’ll find more likeminded people. Well, there Yeah, there’s plenty of convenient spots. Just look at like there like in Hostel for instance or uh the on booking or there’s they do there are a lot of reviews that say, “Oh, this is a very social spot.” We did want a social spot, but we also wanted to save money, so we decided that one. Um, but I mean, it had great reviews and we did want to be social. However, it had great reviews because it’s right next to the street. Yeah. There’s a bunch of other 21y olds in the party. Yeah. And we just weren’t in the mood to party like that. But the only reason why this was such an unfortunate situation was because in this six bed room, there’s only one bathroom. Well, there’s one bathroom inside and one outside. This guy comes home at 3:00 a.m. and plays immediately just is on on his phone. So, it’s like playing playing it out loud. So, playing on his speaker phone, go on Tik Tok, Instagram, whatever. And then he starts opening his bag of chips. Okay. And when you’re in hostels, this is why it’s very important to have your eye mask as well as your earplugs. I could still hear through all of that because he had his like he had it on speaker and of course they’re drunk like fine. Um, and it didn’t bother me too much up until they went to throw up. Okay. Oh, you’re gonna add that to the Oh, yeah. That that was up until And it And so up until they threw up and my bed my even my head like my bed is right next to the door. So Joshua’s bed, he’s on the top bunk, I’m on the bottom bunk. Our heads are facing like very adjacent to to the to the door. And the guy forgets to close the door. the key and didn’t close the door. And it’s only worse because we had to be ready to go on an excursion by 7:30. Mind you, this is 3 o’clock, 3:00 a.m. We have to wake up in 4 hours. And after they done threw up, they still were on their phone eating chips. And and this is when the etiquette comes in, right? Like, yes, you can say something. You can be like, “Hey.” But one, I was not going to get up at 3:00 in the morning. I was able to like kind of sleep in and out. Um, and I don’t I don’t necessarily want to talk to a drunk person at this point, but the etiquette of the dorm is that yes, after hours just try to be mindful. Um, like one time there was this person on the phone in that same room. It was funny. The same like there was another person that just spoke on the phone from like 10 to 12 or like 9 to No, it was 9 to 12. Um, so they were in the room talking on the phone, you know, had had headphones in, but they were talking on the phone and basically a lot of the times the quiet hours would be from 10:00, starting at 10:00. So that person ended up talking till 12:00 and no one said anything. So we’re like, well, we’re still up too and it’s not a big deal. Um, but then at as it was approaching like 12:30 or 1, I was like, okay, I’m actually going to start going to bed now. Like I’m going to say something cuz no one else has. And there’s three other people in the room. Um but yeah, so that was it. Yeah. So you can just like just nicely ask them like, “Hey, can you take the call outside?” But yeah, like don’t feel like the bad guy. If the quiet hours is by rule 10:00, just ask them to leave by then. Yeah. Some houses get ridiculous, but we haven’t had We haven’t had that at all. I said that bad experiences, mind you, we’ve been to So I mean, we’ve been to Everything’s pretty positive. Yeah. Yeah. Like we could rave on how positive it had it has been. I don’t want it to be that we stuck on the the too bad. I mean it’s so rare that that’s why we we’re able to remember. But we have countless good experiences where you have your private you have like private bathrooms um or like a bathroom in the room or they provide slippers for you, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner. Those are like Oh, washing machines. washing machines that already have detergent in it and earplugs. People give you earplugs as well. Um, so there’s there there has been a lot of great exper Oh, and the most important thing is when there’s curtains so you can separate, you don’t have to see everybody else. You have curtains. I like that. Man, you meet so many people, man. You can make lifelong friends while traveling in host. We can attest to that. A shout out to all of y’all that have followed us from when we met at the host and we’ve met up with some people from our trip before. Okay. I love yapping away with our new hostel friends. Who knows? Maybe we can see one of y’all in a hostel one day. I know. We love that. And then, oh my gosh, the hostels, they host outings. You can have pub cross. You can have karaoke night. You could have game night. There’s so many games. Pool night or pool tournaments. Yeah. Some houses are like themed around partying. Some houses are themed around chilling. Like some like you just got to get out there and get your feet wet to see what we talking about. Mhm. But yes, I want to reiterate, we’ve had countless great times at host, which is why we continue staying in them and meeting new people. But yeah, find out your vibe. So, it was I think everything’s been pretty sanitary, too. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I think the best ones No, I was thinking the showers here are really nice. I don’t know. But these don’t have curves pretty I would put it almost on the same level as like hotel sanitation. Like, it’s something like, you know, because the hostels, they clean every day. It’s been nice. Like, I really have no complaints. But yes, definitely have shower shoes, shower sandals. I mean, as you would in in a hotel. Yes. So, we recommend we still recommend host. But it was a good experience for us to have the one in Vietnam. We We had stayed in a hostel before that, too. No, we had a private room. Yeah. Oh, we had a private room. You’re being bougie and you’re acting bougie in Vietnam. You like, “Oh my god, we have to go back to dorms.” Yeah. because we had just had a pro we had been at my aunt’s house for a month, 2 months. We had been alone for so long. So, I wasn’t ready to go back to the hospital. But after that host, after the party hostel, that’s when we realized, okay, this is our first time being right next to the to the um right next to the street, which is why maybe this is a problem. But then we found a lovely another one in district 4. All right, y’all. Now, we’re back at the dorm. We are Oh, look. I see what I’m telling you. I like the stairs on this one. Have they gotten a room tour? No. Give them a room tour. Give them a room tour. Check out tomorrow. We just got back to our dorm. Okay. The dryer. Okay. This whole Okay. It doesn’t look This room looks like a hot mess because the dryer was not drying properly. It’s a washer and dryer in one machine. But unfortunately, I guess our clothes are too thick. It It took a while to dry. Okay. So, we’re air drying some, but we got four bunks. Um, it’s cool that it’s for it’s it’s for four people. However, the only question I really have is if let’s say you got a room with strangers, there’s no curtains. So, that’s different. Like, if I went up, I mean, one person’s here and then So, they don’t have key card. [Music] I just fell. Okay. Thank you so much y’all for watching today. We’re heading to a different city tomorrow. Like and subscribe. Really, really appreciate the support. Um, this has been a very humbling experience. It’s crazy the amount of growth we’ve had. Like even though we only have I think 400 something subscribers at the moment. Like that’s insane. I have 400 people in my graduating class and I it’s crazy. Very very grateful. I only had 100 people in my graduating class. So we to emphasize how much we appreciate y’all. Thank you so much. We’ll see you in the next one.

Join us on an unforgettable Kyoto travel vlog as we spend the day exploring Japan’s culture, food, and unique experiences! 🎥✨

We start off at McDonald’s in Kyoto to review the menu and compare it to the McDonald’s we’ve tried in other countries. 🍔 Which country has the best McDonald’s? Watch to find out!

Afterwards we went fishing at Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake, where we rented gear and tried our luck as beginners. Even though we didn’t catch a single fish, it was a fun adventure and a chance to share tips on how to cast a fishing line and discuss the ethics of fishing. 🎣

Next, we visit the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine, home to the iconic thousands of red torii gates. ⛩️ We talk about the importance of this landmark and why it’s one of Kyoto’s must-see attractions.

To wrap up the day, we enjoy dinner and share our honest thoughts on staying at hostels during our travels—the pros, cons, and what every traveler should know before booking.

Our goal is to inspire you to travel, experience new cultures, and find joy in the journey—even when things don’t go as planned.

  1. Thanks for the walk thru of downtown Kyoto neighborhoods. Never got to see it. For 3 days, always on the train heading away from downtown.
Fushimi Inari was a great experience. The lack of handrails on that mountain…
The park near Lake Biwa looked so peaceful, and quiet.
Let me guess: Next city is Nara, Kobe or Fukuoka.
