*The main feature includes subtitles with commentary. Hello (Konnichiwa.) his channel aims to introduce and share the fascinating culture of Japan and its various regions. This time, we explore Tokyo’s street market culture on the world-famous Ameyoko Street between Ueno and Okachimachi – an iconic market packed with mouthwatering street food, bargain shopping, and a buzzing atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else. If you enjoy affordable shopping and eating your way around Japan, I highly recommend visiting. This time, we’ll start from the front of Okachimachi Station, right in front of Ameyoko. This is the Ameyoko Shopping Street, located between Ueno and Okachimachi. It started as a post-war black market, and has grown into a historic marketplace. Now, around 400 shops line this vibrant street, offering food, clothing, souvenirs, and more. It stretches from Ueno Station to Okachimachi Station. On weekends, it’s packed with locals and tourists. Seasonal foods and special events add to the charm. You can also enjoy its multicultural vibe. Products from across Asia fill the shop fronts. It’s a place where Tokyo’s diversity shines. One highlight here is affordable seafood rice bowls. Fresh fish served over rice at reasonable prices.
(*This is half size : about$3.5 usd) The shop staff are warm and friendly. Sometimes, prices are even negotiable. It makes shopping even more fun. You can feel the human warmth of the market. This is Tokudaiji Temple, dedicated to Marishiten. It’s said to bring prosperity and good luck. Ameyoko offers more than shopping. It’s a place to enjoy food, culture, and history. Every walk brings new discoveries with each season. Stalls selling seafood line the street. You’ll also find fried snacks, grilled food, and sweets. It’s truly a street food paradise. Locals and tourists enjoy eating as they explore. Just walking here makes you hungry. Ameyoko runs between Ueno and Okachimachi Stations, centered under the railway tracks. The atmosphere under the train line is unique.
Shops are tightly packed with energy. In the middle is a plaza, a popular meeting spot. Right in front stands the Ameyoko Center Building. Its basement is filled with Asian grocery stores. Spices, sauces, and rare ingredients are everywhere. It feels like stepping into another country. Both tourists and locals shop here. Upper floors sell clothing and miscellaneous goods. It’s a building full of international charm. You can enjoy both shopping and food here. Walking inside is an adventure in itself. The air is filled with the sights and smells of the market. Under the railway, countless shops line the street. Accessories, clothes, bags, and shoes are abundant. You can often find bargains and unique items. Every visit reveals something new. Narrow paths are packed with stores. It’s like a maze you can get lost in. Tourists and locals mingle here. The sounds and smells of the railway add to its charm. You can shop here even on rainy days. Some stores have been here for decades. It’s where history meets the present. Many restaurants are scattered throughout. You can enjoy cuisine from all over the world. It’s a place full of cultural diversity. On the east side of the railway is another shopping street. Here you’ll find American casual wear and accessories. The selection is unique and stylish. A must-visit for fashion lovers. You might discover one-of-a-kind items. It has a different vibe from Ameyoko’s main street. Even just walking here is enjoyable. You can enjoy both shopping and exploring. Near Okachimachi is a street of international restaurants. I’ll stop by my regular Andhra Kitchen. It has been awarded the Michelin Guide Tokyo 2017. Enjoy authentic South Indian cuisine.
The homemade lemon relish served on the side is refreshing! Ameyoko is where shopping, food, and culture come together. Every visit brings new discoveries.
