Georgetown County’s Olympic champion Melissa
Jefferson-Wooden will be back in action this weekend – this time from Tokyo, Japan
as she participates in the World Athletics Championships.
She secured a spot in the prestigious competition when
she secured a 100m time of 10.65 seconds at the U.S. Olympic Trials in August.
This time makes her the fifth-fastest woman in history
and the fastest in the field heading into the championships in Tokyo.
After the history-making runs during the U.S. Olympic
Trials Jefferson-Wooden continued her strong performance by winning a 100m race
in Brussels with a time of 10.76 seconds.
Now, Jefferson-Wooden – who won a gold and bronze
medal during the 2024 Olympics – is considered one of the favorites, or even
the favorite, for the women’s 100m gold medal at the World Championships in
Tokyo.
She is scheduled to take part in three competitions in
Tokyo – the 100 meters, the 200 meters, and the 4×100.
The competitions will be shown on NBC and Peacock. The
100 meters heats take place at 5:55 AM Saturday with the semi-finals at 7:20 AM
Sunday. The finals will take place at 9:13 AM Sunday.
The 200-meter heats are scheduled for 6:30 AM Wednesday,
September 17. Semi-finals at 8:24 AM Thursday, September 18, and finals at 9:22
AM on Friday, September 19.
The 4×100 heats take place at 7:45 AM, Saturday,
