Footage from NHK television showed passengers evacuating the aircraft via emergency slides on the runway at Kansai International Airport. Two people appeared to have sustained minor injuries, Kyodo News reported. No fire or smoke was visible in the footage.
The Boeing 737-800, operating as UA Flight 32, departed Narita International Airport near Tokyo and triggered the fire alert while flying over the Pacific Ocean. Authorities are investigating whether there was an actual fire or smoke.
The plane landed safely about an hour and a half after departure. Both runways at Kansai International Airport were temporarily closed during the emergency landing.
