With the races soon to start to find the world’s fastest runners, the Air Self-Defense Force’s aerobatic team, Blue Impulse, will put on its own show of speed and precision in the skies overhead.
Blue Impulse will perform over Tokyo on Sept. 13, in a special exhibition flight to mark the opening of the World Athletics Championships.
This will mark Blue Impulse’s first performance over the capital since the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
According to the Defense Ministry, the team is scheduled to start its aerobatic display over the National Stadium, the games’ venue, at 12:25 p.m., with the flight lasting 10 minutes.
Following the stadium flyover, the jets will streak over several iconic Tokyo landmarks during a 15-minute route starting at 12:35 p.m.
The path will include Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Station, Tokyo Tower, Shibuya Station, Yoyogi Park and the Tokyo metropolitan government building.
A rehearsal flight planned for Sept. 12 was canceled due to inclement weather.
The Blue Impulse team flies Kawasaki T-4 jet trainer aircraft. The unit was grounded earlier this year following a fatal crash in Aichi Prefecture that claimed the lives of two crew members.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but the team resumed training flights ahead of two performances in July over the Osaka-Kansai Expo site.
