A Few Days in Nagano | E09 “Peace in Devotion” | Pinpoints

respect every morning. We’re given one more day. [Music] I skied in Nagono several years ago. It was always a plan to return here. It was the beautiful landscape and the people. As my son always says, it’s the vibe. This city feels like the convergence of the three main philosophies of Japan. Shinto, Bashidto, and Buddhism. Bushidto is the samurai code of honor. Shinto is a Japanese-centric religion focused on purity of earthly life. It predates Buddhism which arrived in Japan in 600 CE. It parallels Buddhism which focuses on spiritual growth and the afterlife. Japan found peace and devotion to these three mores. [Music] I’ve always been intrigued by Buddhism and this temple is one of the most significant in Japan. When I was here last, I read about an event called Gokai Cho. Every seven years, Buddhists make a pilgrimage to Zenoji Temple to see a replica Buddha. It’s a replica of the first and original statue of Buddha brought to Japan from India over 1,400 years ago. apparently in all that time only one priest has ever seen the original statue. It’s in there somewhere. [Music] The next Gokao is in 2027. I might come back to experience that. The devotion to Shinto and Buddhism is why Japan is such a peaceful and calm country. But don’t get it twisted. Pushidto is in their blood. The Japanese bow is a warning. A warrior lies within. We are who we are. [Music] [Applause] [Music]

I leave Tokyo and head to Nagano for a few days. Today I tour Zenko ji Temple, one of the most significant Buddhist temples in Japan.
