Exploring Ina City: A Hidden Mountain Town in Nagano
In search of a summer retreat not too far from the Tokyo metropolitan area, I decided to head for Nagano Prefecture. My route took me north through Shizuoka and Yamanashi before entering Nagano.
This time, I traveled from Shiojiri in Nagano southward to Ina City. Even at its higher elevation, the daytime heat was only slightly milder than in the lowlands, but the air was dry and crisp, and at night it became pleasantly cool—very comfortable overall.
I had no clear image of Ina City’s downtown beforehand, but to my surprise, the area in front of the station has a shopping street with covered sidewalks, as well as a fairly large nightlife district for a city of its population size. After doing a bit of research, I found that Ina is home to a concentration of machinery factories, which helps explain the scale and activity of the city.
